Amazon adds comiXology’s ‘guided view’ to Kindle

Ability to read comics panel-to-panel will arrive via updates to the Kindle apps.

Amazon has added comiXology’s “Guided View” experience, which allows you to zoom in and read comics from panel-to-panel, to its Kindle app for iOS, Fire tablets and Android.

“Our customers are passionate about comic books and we continuously look for ways to make their experience even better,” said David Naggar, Vice President, Kindle, in a press release. “We are excited to debut comiXology’s best-in-class Guided View reading experience on Kindle.”

Since purchasing comiXology in 2014, Amazon has integrated features between the two companies — including the ability to tie your comiXology account to your Amazon account, allowing you to sign in and pay via Amazon, and read most Kindle-purchased comics, graphic novel and manga on comiXology’s app.

Per the release, each Guided View experience “is handcrafted by a comic lover to make sure fans can become immersed in reading their favorite comic books, even on the smallest screen.” I don’t use it for every comic I read on comiXology, but it is a nice feature to have, especially with double-page spreads. The update will be delivered as part of a free, over-the-air update on the Kindle app.

“A good story is magical and you really feel that with comiXology’s Guided View with the way the story flows along,” said Joe Hill, author of the Locke and Key series of graphic novels. “There is nothing like it in comics, the feel of being swept along through a story. To me that is a kind of magic.”
