IDW, Sega partner to make Sonic the Hedgehog comics

Announcement follows just days after Sega announces split with Archie Comics

That Sonic does move fast. Two days after announcing they were ending their quarter-century partnership with Archie Comics, Sega has a new publisher for Sonic the Hedgehog comics — IDW Publishing.

Or, to put it in terms Veronica might appreciate: Sega dumps Archie right before nerd prom — and hooks up with IDW.

“We’ve been speaking with beloved Sonic fan-favorite creators and new creators alike, and are excited to be able to spread specifics about our plans for the comic in the near future,” said Chris Ryall, IDW’s Chief Creative Officer, in the press release.

“We are ecstatic about this partnership with IDW,” said Ivo Gerscovich, Chief Brand Officer for Sonic the Hedgehog. “We know they’ll serve as a good home for the new adventures of Sonic, his friends and foes.”

No word yet on creative teams or release dates yet. Sega posted the news on the Sonic Facebook page, and already it’s gotten more than 200 comments from fans asking questions:

IDW has been building up a stable of strong kid’s comic licenses, including Star Wars, My Little Pony, the just-announced Goosebumps, and various Disney titles like DuckTales and Walt Disney’s Comics & Stories.
