Jonathan Hickman returns to Marvel for ‘House of X,’ ‘Powers of X’

The X-Men-themed event titles kick off this summer.

Jonathan Hickman said “See you later” to Marvel back in 2015, departing the company to focus on creator-owned books at Image, like East of West, The Dying and the Dead and other titles.

It’s later, and at C2E2 Marvel announced Hickman will return to the company this year to write two X-Men-focused event series, House of X and Powers of X. (The second one is pronounced “Powers of 10.”)

“We are excited to have Jon back with the Marvel family, and we could not have asked for a better creative team to help usher the X-Men into a whole new era,” said Marvel Editor in Chief C.B. Cebulski. “While we can’t reveal too much about the story just yet, these new stories will redefine the X-Men and their place in the Marvel Universe. This is a historic moment both new and passionate fans won’t want to miss.”

Joining Hickman on the titles are Pepe Larraz, R.B. Silva and colorist Marte Garcia. Marvel says the series “will build from every major X-Men milestone since 1963 up through the current X-Men series and storylines fans know and love, including some of our most iconic characters from over the decades.” The promotional art for the titles features X-related characters from many different eras, including Weapon X Wolverine, mohawk Storm, Lilandra and pirate Nightcrawler:

Hickman shared the news on Twitter in the only appropriate way:

Each series will be released on an alternate weekly schedule, starting with House of X, followed by Powers of X. According to this handy infographic, the event’ll kick off in July:

You’ll note that there’s also an as-yet-unrevealed event scheduled for December.

“The Marvel Universe is a tapestry of connections, with hidden clues and incredible details woven into every story. Our new publishing slate highlights the biggest moments for us this year…and we think you all will be excited for the next reveal planned this December,” Cebulski said.

Update: Also, that new “X” logo appearing at the top of the House of X promo image was designed by Tom Muller:
