Can’t Wait for Comics | ‘X of Swords’ begins

New comics arrive this week from Fabian Nicieza, Ron Garney, Jonathan Hickman, Pepe Larraz, Dan Panosian, Joshua Williamson, Howard Porter and more.

We are back with a look at what’s arriving in comic shops, bookstores and on digital this week. There are several first issues coming out, including new titles from Dan Panosian, Daniel Kraus, Fabian Nicieza, Ron Garney and of course the big X of Swords crossover event featuring Marvel’s merry mutants (with swords!)

If you’re wondering what to get this week, check out a few recommendations below. You can check out Comic List to see what’s arriving in your local comic shop, and the comiXology new releases page for what’s available digitally.

The Autumnal #1

Author Daniel Kraus (The Shape of Water, Trollhunters) teams with artist Chris Shehan for a new series from Vault Comics’ horror-oriented Nightfall imprint. The Autumnal is about a mother and daughter who move from Chicago to the tiny town of Comfort Notch, New Hampshire, where they encounter a forest creature that uses fallen leaves as stepping stones. [Vault Comics, $3.99, out Wednesday]

Death Metal: Speed Metal / Flash #762

It’s a big week for Joshua Williamson and the Flash. First, Death Metal: Speed Metal arrives, a one-shot drawn by Eddy Barrows that ties into the big Dark Nights: Death Metal event. It features The Darkest Knight (the new name for The Batman Who Laughs) chasing after Wally West and his Dr. Manhattan powers. Second, Williamson wraps up his 101-issue run on the Flash with the conclusion to the “Finish Line” storyline, pitting Flash and Reverse-Flash against each other “for the last time.” [DC Comics, $5.99/3.99 respectively, out today]

Immortal She-Hulk #1

Coming out of Marvel’s Empyre, Al Ewing, Jon Davis-Hunt and Marcio Menyz present a one-shot following up on everything that happened Jennifer Walters during the event and her “new lease on life.” [Marvel, $4.99, out Wednesday]

Juggernaut #1

Fabian Nicieza and Ron Garney launch Professor X’s step-brother into his own five-issue miniseries this week. With Marvel’s mutant population now living on Krakatoa, the unstoppable one has to figure out his place in the world without Black Tom or the X-Men. [Marvel, $3.99, Out Wednesday]

Spider-Man #4

So a LOT has changed in the world since we last saw an issue of this miniseries written by JJ Abrams and son, and drawn by Sara Pichelli. I think the last one came out in December, before we were all introduced to the nightmare that is 2020. The big secret/hook here is that the comic is focusing on Spider-Man’s son, Ben, who was raised by Aunt May and takes over as Spider-Man. Anyway, it looks like this is finally going to wrap up. [Marvel, $3.99, out Wednesday]

An Unkindness of Ravens #1

Slots creator Dan Panosian teams with artist Marianna Ignazzi for a five-issue miniseries involving high school kids, witchcraft and hidden secrets. You can see a preview of the first issue here. [BOOM! Studios, $3.99, out Wednesday]

X Of Swords: Creation #1

With Empyre wrapped up in the rear view, Marvel turns to their next big event — the X-Men-themed X of Swords (pronounced “Ten of Swords”). X-architect Jonathan Hickman and Pepe Larraz team up for the first issue of the crossover, which will run through the regular X-titles and have two other specials during the course of the event. If you’ve only been buying a few of the X-titles like I have, I guess you’ll have to decide if you’re all in or maybe taking a break from them for the next couple months. Like Empyre, they’ll have everything wrapped up quickly, as the last chapter comes out in November. More details here. [Marvel, $6.99, out Wednesday]
