Can’t Wait for Comics | DC pulls out the stops for Pride Month

This week brings new comics and graphic novels from Joshua Williamson, Daniel Sampere, G. Willow Wilson, Marcio Takara, Ram V, Christian Ward, Cavan Scott, Andres Ponce, Tee Franklin, Dan Parent, Matt Bors, Ben Clarkson, Christine Larsen and more.

Welcome to Can’t Wait for Comics, your guide to what comics are arriving in comic book stores, bookstores and on digital this week. This week brings several new Pride Month comics from DC, as well as the debuts of Dark Crisis, a Marvel/Fortnite crossover, Justice Warriors, The Ward and more.

Maines + Hickman team for ‘Dreamer’ graphic novel

The character from The CW’s Supergirl will be written by the actress who portrayed her in an upcoming graphic novel.

DC confirmed on Twitter plans for Dreamer, the character first introduced on The CW’s Supergirl and played by trans actress Nicole Maines, to appear in her own graphic novel. Rye Hickman will provide the art.

Maines revealed the project to the website Them. The character previously appeared in last year’s DC Pride special and will appear in an upcoming issue of Superman: Son of Kal-El, which Maines will co-write with Tom Taylor and featuring art by Clayton Henry.

Seeley + Galan hit ‘The Roadie’ in September

Sex, drugs and exorcisms.

In a comic that sounds right up his alley, Tim Seeley will team will artist Fran Galan on The Roadie, a new miniseries coming in the fall from Dark Horse Comics.

The comic stars a former heavy metal band roadie from the 1980s “satanic panic” era — but it turns out all those stories about backwards lyrics summoning demons were real, so he not only carried gear but also served as an exorcist when needed.

“I wanted to tell the story of the ‘unsung hero’ of the 80s Satanic Panic era…,” Seeley said, “the roadies who supported all those metal bands, not only by tuning their guitars, but by casting out the horrific demons they accidentally summoned with backwards lyrics and screaming riffs. Joe D. is the seventh son of a seventh son, and though once he stood next to greatness, he now wallows in obscurity…. until he gets called upon to return to a past he thought he’d left far behind. The Roadie is part Hack/Slash, part Revival, and all heart, with Fran Galan doing some absolutely rockin’ art.”

Skybound will publish a ‘Creepshow’ miniseries this fall

The five-issue anthology series will feature stories by Paul Dini, Chris Burnham, Kelley Jones and more.

Shudder’s Creepshow TV series will jump from the screen to the printed page in a new five-issue miniseries from Skybound, who have recruited an impressive array of talent to scare the pants off of readers.

“Creepshow has consistently been one of the best things in horror for the last 40 years, and for Skybound to be able to carry on such a rich horror tradition is an absolute thrill,” said Jon Moisan, editor at Skybound. “We knew a franchise this prolific would require the best talent in the industry, so we assembled a collection of creators that will do the Creepshow name proud. The stories they have planned are going to scare the absolute hell out of people.”’

Starring in own miniseries, Yoda is

The 10-issue series will chronicle key moments in the Jedi master’s life..

Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim has brought news that Lucasfilm and Marvel plans to publish a 10-issue series about the life of Yoda.

The comic will be told in three arcs by writers Cavan Scott, Jody Houser and Marc Guggenheim and artists Nico Leon, Luke Ross and Alessandro Miracolo. It’ll be set moments before Yoda’s first appearance in Empire Strikes Back, as the ancient Jedi master reflects on key moments in his life before he meets Luke Skywalker.

Marvel, Lucasfilm announce two new ‘Star Wars: The High Republic’ titles

The new titles were announced during this weekend’s Star Wars Celebration.

Marvel and Lucasfilm have announced two new comics set during the Star Wars: The High Republic timeline that was first announced back in 2020.

The High Republic has, so far anyway, been a publishing initiative for Lucasfilm, spanning novels and comics, and telling the story of the Jedi Knights many decades before the Skywalker saga. It’s introduced several new characters, in addition to using a younger Yoda in the stories.

A second volume of the ongoing series Star Wars: The High Republic will be written by Cavan Scott and drawn by Ario Anindito, who worked on the first volume. In addition, Marvel will publish Star Wars: The High Republic – The Blade, a four issue miniseries by Charles Soule and Marco Castiello.

Terry Moore’s ‘Parker Girls’ coming in August

The new series spins out of ‘Strangers in Paradise.’

I missed this when it was first announced, but Strangers in Paradise creator Terry Moore has announced his next series, Parker Girls, which will feature some familiar faces.

The Strangers in Paradise spin-off will feature appearances by several characters from that series, including Tambi, Cherry Hammer, Becky The Gun Girl, Stephanie and Katchoo, according to the creator. Several of them also appeared in the crossover series Five Years, which also featured characters from other Moore comics like Rachel Rising and Echo.

Iko iko an day: Grannies kick ass in ‘Golden Rage’

Chrissy Williams, Lauren Knight, Sofie Dodgson, Becca Carey and Joamette Gil present a series about old women baking cakes and fighting to the death.

A new Image Comics miniseries will explore a world where old women are sent to an island to live out the reminder of their lives — and battle to the death. My grandma and your grandma, sitting by the fire …

Golden Rage by Chrissy Williams, Lauren Knight, Sofie Dodgson, Becca Carey and Joamette Gil will feature a little-seen demographic in comics — older woman, and showcase how they can kick as much ass as anyone. (My grandmother, who played bingo in some pretty sketchy places, carried a butcher knife in her purse).

“Old women are formidable—I wrote Golden Rage to reflect that,” said Williams. “These characters are tough, capable, kind, and funny. I’ve fallen in love with the combination of cake and stabbing weapons, and hope you will too.”

Waid + Asrar team for ‘Batman vs. Robin’ this fall

The event series will run for five issues beginning in September.

If things have seemed tense between Batman and Robin lately, well … as the saying goes, you ain’t seen nothing yet.

With a post that exclaims “The Bat is out of the bag!” artist Mahmud Asrar reveals that he’s working on a new Batman vs. Robin event series with writer Mark Waid and colorist Nathan Fairbairn.

“BATMAN vs ROBIN is a five part event by Mark Waid and I coming this fall from DC Comics to shake things up for Bruce’s world,” the artist said on both Tumblr and Twitter.

Dark Horse announces their first new Star Wars titles

‘Star Wars: Hyperspace Stories’ will kick off Dark Horse’s all-ages Star Wars line in August.

Dark Horse and Lucasfilm have announced the first two Star Wars comics projects coming from Dark Horse under the new licensing deal struck between the two companies late last year.

While Marvel continues with their line of comics aimed at older audiences, Dark Horse has picked up the license for “all-ages comics and graphic novels in partnership with Lucasfilm.” It’s a license that previously was held by IDW.

The new comics include Star Wars: Hyperspace Stories, an anthology featuring stories set in every era of the Star Wars timeline, and Star Wars: Tales from the Rancor Pit, a collection of “frighteningly fun” stories for Halloween.

Schultz, Borelli + Contreras arrange ‘The Deadliest Bouquet’

The successful Kickstarter project will be published by Image in August.

When Jasmine Hawthorn’s past as a Nazi hunter catches up with her, it’s up to her three daughters to rely on their training to bring her killers to justice. Erica Schultz, Carola Borelli and Gab Contreras tell the story of The Deadliest Bouquet, a miniseries coming this summer from Image Comics after a successful Kickstarter campaign last year.

“This story has kicked around in my head for a long time, so it’s amazing to see it in print from Image!” Schultz exclaimed.

Schultz‘s credits include the recent Bylines in Blood from AfterShock, as well as Forgotten Home and Strange Tails. Borelli‘s work has appeared in Love University, and Contreras’ wonderful coloring can be seen on comics like Witchblood and Mezo.

‘Shirtless Bear-Fighter’ returns in August to battle Ursa Major

The shirtless one fights again!

The day you’ve been waiting for has finally arrived — the day you find out there’s going to be a second Shirtless Bear-Fighter miniseries from Jody LeHeup and Nil Vendrell.

And if this is the day you discover there was a first Shirtless Bear-Fighter miniseries, then oh my — what a day to be alive. Image Comics announced the news with a press release filled with an appropriate number of bear puns.

“Shirtless Bear-Fighter is quite possibly the most joyful comic of all time and given the events of the last few years, we could all use some of that joy right now,” LeHeup told ComicBook.com. “So I’m absolutely thrilled to announce Shirtless Bear-Fighter 2. We always said we wouldn’t do more unless we found the right story and boy did we find it. I cannot wait for fans to see what Nil and I have in store. If you thought volume one was wild, you haven’t seen anything yet. Prebear yourselves!”
