Oni Press will publish Jay Stephens’ horrifying Harvey Comics tribute ‘Dwellings’

The three-issue prestige series begins in August.

Cartoonist/animator Jay Stephens will team with Oni Press for a new printing of Dwellings, his bloody ode to Harvey Comics and the rot that lives beneath suburbia.

Stephens previously crowdfunded the series, which won a Doug Wright Award last year. Oni will publish three 72-page prestige format issues of Dwellings bi-monthly starting in August.

“As a young collector in the days before the internet, before our town even dreamt of a comic shop, I remember walking the train tracks on weekends, hunting back issues at garage sales and flea markets, picking up whatever I could find,” Stephens said. “Though considered uncool, I was magnetically attracted to the irresistibly adorable Harvey comics… Casper, Spooky, Wendy and Hot Stuff in particular… and always kept an eye out for that one issue where they finally revealed who murdered Casper the Friendly Ghost. If the definition of nostalgia is to ‘return home in pain,’ Dwellings is the most nostalgic work I’ve ever produced. And my re-imagining of that darker Harvey Comics backstory has festered and intertwined with my personal fears into something truly frightening.”

‘It’s about to get real’ in ‘Tower #4’ by Camrus Johnson, Kelsey Barnhart + Loyiso Mkize

Courtesy of A Wave Blue World, we’re pleased to present a preview of Tower #4, the penultimate issue of the miniseries written by Camrus Johnson and Kelsey Barnhart, with art by Loyiso Mkize.

The comic falls into the “dystopian competition” genre — one of my favorite genres — where real-life contestants try to make it to the top of what appears to be a virtual Tower. The story focuses on three of them, who “have to smarten up and join forces if they intend to survive, using their individualized weapons and animal assistants to outsmart deadly traps and ambushes.”

This fourth issue brings a change in artist, as Mkize takes over from ChrisCross. Johnson and Mkize previously worked together on a story for Batman: Urban Legends featuring Batwing, the character Johnson played on The CW’S Batwoman.

“First, I have to shout out Loyiso Mkize who takes over on art for issues #4 and 5, and absolutely crushes it. His work is beautiful and I can’t wait for people to see all of it because he blew me away,” Johnson said. “Tower #4 might just be my favorite issue; there’s just so dang much that goes down! We get a glimpse inside all three of our leads’ minds, not just Casandra’s. Now that our main three are officially no longer a team and in separate parts of the Tower making their way to the top, they each have their own journeys that we get to track. And each has an absolutely massive change that affects the way they’ll move throughout the next and final issue. If you thought there was a ton of action before, this penultimate issue is jam packed with it, including my favorite fight of the whole series. Oh and I just have to say, I love the final panel. It’s about to get real.”

Kelly, Lanzing + Carnero’s final Captain America story arrives in August

‘Captain America Finale’ follows ‘Cold War’ and wraps up the conflict with the Outer Circle.

Collin Kelly, Jackson Lanzing and Carmen Carnero’s time on Captain America will come to an end in August in Captain America Finale #1, which follows the Captain America: Cold War story currently running through Marvel’s two Captain America titles.

Finale will address, according to Marvel, the “explosive aftermath” of Cold War, which features Steve Rogers, Sam Wilson and friends battling the Outer Circle and its newest member, Bucky Barnes.

Kelly, Lanzing and Carnero are the creative team for Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty, which seems to be ending, but the story on Marvel.com does not address the future of its sister title, Captain America: Symbol of Truth. My first thought was, “Is Steve Rogers dying again?” but we know he’s in the upcoming Uncanny Avengers, so I don’t think that’s the case.

Jason Copland’s ‘Full Tilt’ blasts through its crowdfunding goal

The campaign on Zoop tops $20,000 on its first day.

Kill All Monsters artist Jason Copland’s been working on his latest project, Full Tilt, for the past five years. Fueled by passion and Slurpees, Copland has created an “action-filled future noir epic,” loaded with love, grit and numerous two-page spreads.

The 300+ page black-and-white hardcover went live on Zoop yesterday, asking for a modest goal of $10,000. Full Tilt was well over $20,000 by the end of the day, and is approaching $30,000 as I type this.

“Full Tilt is a gritty, violent tale about a 23rd century crime family consigliere who must face the consequences of a choice he made between love and loyalty,” Copland said in his newsletter. “It’s an action filled future noir epic that touches on many eternal themes such as love and hate, family and power.”

Image Comics will publish Tony S. Daniel’s ‘Edenwood’ in September

Witches battle demons in a war-torn United States, in this alternate history tale.

An epic war between demons and witches arrives on Earth in Edenwood, a high-concept fantasy series by Nocterra artist Tony S. Daniel.

Image Comics will publish the new series, which the veteran artist of Batman, Spawn, The Tenth and more will both write and draw. Natália Marques (Rogue Sun) will color the series.

“Edenwood is a series three years in the making, one that I was beginning to craft right before Scott Snyder and I crossed paths in NYC and fate took me in another direction, co-creating Nocterra with one of comics’ finest writers,” said Daniel. “This series represents what I love most about comics: excitement, drama, big action, heroes we can relate to and fall in love with, and villains we’ll love to despise.”

Louise Simonson returns to the X-Men for a Jean Grey miniseries

The four-issue series will tie into the ‘Fall of X’ event.

Louise Simonson, legendary Marvel editor and former writer of X-Factor, will return to a character near and dear to her heart in Jean Grey, a four-issue miniseries with artist Bernard Chang.

The series will launch in August and tie into Fall of X, which Marvel.com describes as a “dark new age of mutantkind” and the potential end of Krakoa. To help save mutantkind, Jean Grey will have to look to her past to save the future, as the series explores different dark events in Jean Grey’s life.

“I loved writing X-Factor and Jean was a pivotal part of those stories, from the escape from her Phoenix-created cocoon to her life and death battle with the Goblin Queen in Inferno. So It’s really exciting to explore Jean’s part in this new mega-adventure,” Simonson said.

‘This Ends Tonight’ begins in July

Artist Jae Lee teams with a trio of writers for three issues of mayhem.

Legendary artist Jae Lee will make an action-packed return to interior art in This Ends Tonight, a new miniseries from Image Comics.

Lee will work with co-writers Gerry Duggan, Kelvin Mao and Robert Windom on the three-issue series where each issue tells a separate, but interconnected, story. June Chung joins them on colors.

“I’ve been a fan of Jae’s since Inhumans back in the ’90s and a fan of Robert’s since he collaborated with Jae on the terrific series Seven Sons at Image last year,” Duggan said. “It’s my privilege to be a part of This Ends Tonight beginning this summer. You’re all in for a ride.”

Matt Groening’s ‘Disenchantment’ comes to comics

An ‘Untold Tales” volume will collect previously created by as-yet-unreleased material based on the Netflix show.

Disenchantment, the animated Netflix series from Matt Groening that’s run for four seasons (with a fifth on the way), will come to comics later this year courtesy of Titan Comics.

Disenchantment: Untold Tales Volume 1 will collect two limited-release comics as well as bunch of previously unreleased material featuring Bean, Elfo, Luci and more. Titan plans two additional volumes as well.

According to the publisher, only the first two issues of these comics were ever released as a convention exclusive in 2019. Meanwhile, 500 pages and 17 issues of original strips with new stories were left unpublished. The first graphic novel will also feature exclusive content from the show’s creators.

DC announces three New Golden Age miniseries

Alan Scott, Jay Garrick and Wesley Dodds each take the spotlight in October.

Geoff Johns’ “The New Golden Age” line will continue in October with miniseries focused on three of DC’s Golden Age heroes: Alan Scott: The Green Lantern by Tim Sheridan and Cian Tormey, Jay Garrick: The Flash by Jeremy Adams and Diego Olortegui, and Wesley Dodds: The Sandman by Robert Venditti and Riley Rossmo.

The three miniseries continue the overarching story being told by Johns in Justice Society of America and Stargirl: The Lost Children — the latter of which wraps up on May 9.

“It’s long past time that the heroes of the Justice Society had their own titles again,” Johns said. “At the same time, they had to be special, important and emotional stories, each one exploring character, revealing secrets, and introducing new heroes and villains to the DC Universe.”

Emily Carrington’s ‘Our Little Secret’ wins the 2023 Lynd Ward Graphic Novel Prize

Kate Beaton’s ‘Ducks’ was named an ‘honor book’ by the awards program.

Our Little Secret, Emily Carrington’s account of her abuse by a neighbor as a child and her attempts as an adult to find justice and peace, has won the 2021 Lynd Ward Graphic Novel Prize. Drawn and Quarterly published the graphic novel in March of 2022.

The award comes with a $2,500 prize, and the winner is chosen by a panel of judges.

“In this graphic memoir, Emily Carrington takes readers through her traumatic story of childhood abuse. While the novel begins with a warning, it only partially prepares the reader for the powerful narrative and emotional rollercoaster that they are about to be taken on,” the judges said. “Throughout the journey, Carrington expertly uses the graphic novel format to set the tone and pace the narrative. The story is clear and engaging and invites readers to witness the author’s futile quest for redress through the courts. This cultivates empathy and performs a kind of grassroots justice without sacrificing literary and artistic excellence. Carrington’s visuals are confident and original. She uses metaphor beautifully, and seamlessly weaves surrealist threads throughout the narrative. ‘Our Little Secret’ is fluid, utterly engaging, and evokes empathy and compels action.”

Marvel adds a Spider-Man video game tie-in to Free Comic Book Day

The comic by Christos Gage and Ig Guara will be available tomorrow.

Marvel has added another comic to their Free Comic Book Day line-up for this year — Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 #1, a tie-in to the video game series from Insomniac Games.

The story is set between the Spider-Man: Miles Morales game and the upcoming Spider-Man 2, which is scheduled to be released later this year. This marks the return of video game world, aka the “Gamerverse,” to comics, as it previously appeared in the Spider-Verse crossover series Spider-Geddon as well as several miniseries that followed the first game.
