Gillen + Wijngard + Cowles bring ‘The Power Fantasy’ to life in August

The new series about superpowered beings will be published by Image Comics.

Kieron Gillen, Caspar Wijngaard and Clayton Cowles will present “the eternal fight against fighting” in the new series The Power Fantasy, coming in August from Image Comics.

The series will feature six superpowered people, with “superpowered” being described as having the destructive power of America’s nuclear arsenal. So for the good of the world, it’s important that they never come into conflict.

“This is very much the new big swing book,” Gillen said on social media. “I think you’ll love it.”

Here’s the teaser:

The end is just the beginning in W. Maxwell Prince’s ‘Swan Songs’

The co-creator of ‘Ice Cream Man’ kicks off a new anthology series about the end of things.

W. Maxwell Prince has proven himself a master of the one-issue story, between the anthology series Ice Cream Man and Haha. Prince will continue this “one-shot formula” in July with the launch of Swan Songs, which will tell one-issue stories about endings.

The series will be published by Image Comics.

Martin Simmonds, artist of The Department of Truth, will join Prince for the first issue. The series will naturally start with the end of the world. Caspar Wijngaard will draw the second issue, which the artist says is about the end of a marriage. Filipe Andrade will also draw a future issue.

“It’s a shame that everything has to end,” said Prince. “But dem’s the rules.”

Dynamite revives ‘Peter Cannon: Thunderbolt,’ ‘Turok’

Both comics set to launch in January.

Heading into this weekend’s New York Comic Con, Dynamite Entertainment announced two reboots of some old comic favorites.

First up is Peter Cannon: Thunderbolt, by Kieron Gillen and Caspar Wijngaard.

“I’ve been away from the genre for a few years. This is me refreshed, grinning and more than a little bit angry. I want to try things. I want to have fun. Hell, we’ve created a whole new supporting cast of heroes for this series because we wanted to. I wanted to do a state of the art, state of the superheroic nation, and Peter Cannon: Thunderbolt is it,” Gillen said in a press release. “High adventure, big ideals, epic destruction, heroism, despair and nine-panel grids.”

When monkeys fly: Image announces ‘Angelic’

Simon Spurrier and Caspar Wijngaard tell the story of teenage rebellion on a human-less Earth.

Simon Spurrier and Caspar Wijngaard are teaming up for a new “young adult” title called Angelic, which launches from Image Comics in September.

“Angelic’s about teenage flying monkeys having adventures in the far future, because that’s totally a genre now,” Spurrier said in a press release. “But in the best traditions of age-friendly fiction—think Pixar or Ghibli—there’s also a bunch of meaty themes beneath the fun: religion, parenthood, technology and responsibility, it’s all in the mix. Ultimately it’s a tale about the Earth—after us. And all rendered in the unmistakably vivid color and crackle of superstar-in-the-making Caspar Wijngaard.”

Featuring genetically modified winged monkeys, techno-dolphins and quantum alley cats, Angelic tells the story of Qora, a flying monkey who doesn’t want to lose her wings in a human-less future.
