Anne Leung DePies replaces Daniel Cherry as DC’s general manager

DePies will be responsible for the operations, revenue, legal, marketing, brand management, and strategic planning of the DC business, with a special focus on driving DC’s international and digital expansion.

DC has announced via press release that Anne Leung DePies has been named senior vice president and general manager, following the departure of Daniel Cherry III earlier this month. DePies will report to Pam Lifford, President, WarnerMedia Global Brands and Experiences.

“Anne’s deep knowledge and appreciation of the DC business, legacy and people will be invaluable in this new leadership role,” Lifford said “She understands our fans, characters and stories, and along with Jim, will passionately build our DC publishing business to even greater heights.”

DePies has been with DC since 2011 and was most recently SVP of global brands and franchises. Prior to DC, DePies worked on acquisitions across Warner Bros. theatrical, television and video games units.

“It is incredibly humbling to step into this role at a place I’ve been for a while now,” DePies said. “I feel like I partially grew up at DC, and I’ve seen how important we are to our fans. To get the chance to lead our company to do even more for them is a dream come true.”

Report: Daniel Cherry III leaves DC

DC’s SVP and GM leaves after 16 months at the company.

Multiple outlets are reporting that Daniel Cherry III has left DC after serving as SVP and general manager for 16 months.

The reason for his exit, which was described as “quitting” by The Hollywood Reporter, was not given.

Cherry joined DC in September of 202o, where he was responsible for business affairs, editorial, talent services, marketing, sales, brand and direct to consumer for the company. While there, he oversaw several new initiatives, including the Batman/Fortnite crossover, a partnership with Webtoon, the launch of the Milestone Initiative and a second DC FanDome event. His hiring was followed very quickly by another round of layoffs at the company as part of a larger restructuring by parent company WarnerMedia.

Prior to his time at DC, Cherry served in several marketing roles at various companies, including Activision, the New Jersey Devils, Diageo and the New York Cosmos soccer team.

DC + Milestone announce The Milestone Initiative

The new talent development program will provide nine weeks of training for new comic artists and writers.

Milestone Media and DC Comics have teamed up with Ally, an online financial services company, to launch the Milestone Initiative, a new program that’s meant “to identify, support and elevate emerging diverse writers and artists within the comic book industry.”

The program, which was announced yesterday during DC FanDome, will includes a week-long, in-person training seminar in DC’s Burbank, California offices next February. That will be followed by an eight-week virtual technical training course through the Kubert School. The initiative is actually part of a larger effort by DC to develop new talent called Next Generation DC.

DC, Webtoon partner to make webcomics

The partnership will bring popular DC characters to the webcomics juggernaut’s worldwide platform.

DC Comics and Webtoon have announced a partnership that will bring DC’s characters to the popular webcomics platform.

According to the press release, these will be “standalone series” that “will appeal to all fans, without the need to know or read any previous stories,” but they will be set in the DC Universe.

“DC is excited to introduce our iconic characters to a new generation of fans worldwide,” said DC General Manager Daniel Cherry III. “We’ve been working closely with the Webtoon writers and artists to adapt our characters and stories to Webtoon’s mobile format. Our shared goal is to create fun and compelling DC stories that all readers will enjoy. This partnership is yet another example of DC’s ambition to ‘meet fans where ever they are’ and continue sharing DC fandom. ”

DC promotes Marie Javins to editor-in-chief; lay off more staff

Javins will serve as the permanent editor-in-chief after serving as co-interim EiC with Michele Wells, who is reportedly being let go from the company.

DC Comics started the week with the announcement that Marie Javins has been named the sole editor-in-chief, a role she had been sharing with Michele Wells since Bob Harris was let go in August. The news, which was generally well-received by the comics industry, was soon followed by reports that DC is again notifying staff of more layoffs.

And among those laid off appears to be Wells, according to The Beat and Bleeding Cool. Before serving jointly with Javins as co-interim EiC, Wells headed up the DC Children’s/Young Adult line.

Other names mentioned as being affected include Alex Carr, group editor for the Justice League titles; Sales Manager Stuart Schreck; Marketing Services Director Adam Phillips; and Events Director Fletcher Chu-Fong.

Not surprisingly, Dog Man has once again claimed the top spot on best-seller charts for USA Today, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Publishers Weekly, Indie Bound, Toronto Star, and The Globe and Mail, among others. It’s the ninth book in Dav Pilkey’s popular kids graphic novel series to land at No. 1 on the best-seller chart.

DC names Daniel Cherry III as SVP and general manager

The hire will allow Jim Lee to focus on ‘the overall DC brand.’

DC Comics has announced that they’ve hired Daniel Cherry III, who previously served as Chief Marketing Officer for Activision Blizzard Esports, as their new SVP and General Manager.

This is a new role for the company, but one that Jim Lee referenced a few weeks back. According to the report, Cherry will be responsible for business affairs, editorial, talent services, marketing, sales, brand and direct to consumer for DC. Like Lee, he’ll report to Pam Lifford, Warner Bros. global brands and experience president.
