More High Republic Adventures crash-land at Dark Horse

A one-shot featuring Alys “Crash” Ongwa and a miniseries featuring former Jedi Ty Yorrick will arrive this spring.

Dark Horse has announced two more projects that look back at the pre-Skywalker Star Wars universe, back in the heyday of the Jedi. Return to the High Republic era in the one-shot subtitled Crash Landing and the four-issue Saber for Hire miniseries.

Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures Phase III—Crash Landing is by the team of Daniel José Older (author of several Star Wars: The High Republic novels), artist Rachele Aragno and colorist Michael Atiyeh, with letters by Comicraft.

The story features Alys “Crash” Ongwa, who hails from the same planet that would eventually give us Han Solo — Corellia, which is known for producing ships and pilots. Corellia fell into chaos because of the Nihil conflict, which has been central to the overall High Republic saga.

“Crash and her wild outlaw team of bodyguards are some of my favorite Star Wars characters to write,” Older said, “and I’ve had this story about how they deal with the aftermath of war inside me for a long time, trying to get out. I’m so excited to be able to tell it now with this amazing team, and rest assured we haven’t heard the last of Crash and her crew.”

‘Minor Threats’ returns next year with a sequel miniseries

Writers Patton Oswalt and Jordan Blum, along with artist Scott Hepburn, return to Redport to spotlight the reigning queen of crime.

Patton Oswalt, Jordan Blum and Scott Hepburn will return to the world of Minor Threats next year with a sequel miniseries, Minor Threats: The Fastest Way Down. Joined by colorist Ian Herring and letterer Nate Piekos, the team will return to the world of Minor Threats with a story that focuses on Frankie Follis, AKA the costumed criminal Playtime, AKA the new Queenpin of crime.

“We’re thrilled to get the chance to return to Twilight City and continue Frankie’s story,” said Blum. “It’s important to us that every chapter has its own unique crime-fiction flavor. If volume one was our ‘survive the night’ thriller then volume two is our ‘Godfather part 2’ sprawling epic. It’s one thing to name yourself the Queenpin of super-crime, it’s another to defend it. Playtime will learn that with great power… comes rival Holiday-themed gangs, vengeful teen sidekicks, haunting superhero ghosts and unearthed secrets that will threaten everything she’s built.”

Bunn + Piazzalunga’s over-the-top horror romp lands next year

‘Monsters Are My Business (And Business is Bloody)’ will debut from Dark Horse in April.

Dark Horse this week announced a new miniseries from horror mastermind Cullen Bunn and Happy Horror Days artist Patrick Piazzalunga. Monsters Are My Business (And Business is Bloody) is described as “an over the top, colorful, vibrant world of horrors,” and features colors by Marco Brakko and letters by Jim Campbell.

“Some time ago, Patrick and I were discussing working together on a new creator-owned title,” said Bunn. “He sent me some concept sketches of this big, burly biker type and a chainsaw-wielding, cigar-smoking koala bear. From there, we discussed building a story of elder gods, mutant cults, mercenary necromancers, and a lot of bloody good violence. Monsters Are My Business was born! I am just in awe of Patrick’s ability to fuse horror and action and comedy so seamlessly. Readers are going to dig this book!”

Warren Pleece returns to Dark Horse for ‘a dystopian eco-noir thriller’

The creator of ‘Incognegro’ will write and draw a new graphic novel for the Berger Books imprint.

Incognegro creator Warren Pleece will return with a new graphic novel next year from Berger Books, the Dark Horse imprint run by former Vertigo chief Karen Berger.

The Sunny-Luna Travelling Oracle is described as “a dystopian eco-noir thriller about power, escape, creation, and the mark we leave on the world.”

“My love of the natural world and learning about the Wood Wide Web grafted to my other permanent obsession with the long dramatic shadows cast by classic film noir, finally led me to this rip-snorting eco-thriller story with more than a touch of magic,” Pleece said.

Erman + Beck journey to ‘Loving, Ohio’ in a new graphic novel coming next year

Dark Horse Comics will publish the new graphic novel about surviving cults, murderers and high school.

Dark Horse Comics will publish Loving, Ohio next year, a graphic novel about four friends trying to survive high school in a town built around a cult.

Matthew Erman, writer of Good Luck, Witchblood, Terminal Punks and Mariko Between Worlds, and Sam Beck, the wonderful artist of Verse and Renegade Rule, will introduce The Chorus, a cult that “has infiltrated every structure of Loving.”

 “Loving, Ohio is the best piece of fiction I’ve written so far in my life,” said Erman. “I grew up in a cult, as many people do and Loving, Ohio says everything I want to say on the matter. I am immensely proud of it and so grateful for Sam and the gorgeous book she created with me. I can’t wait for you to read this because I think you all are going to be wowed by what we’ve made. Thank you, thank you, thank you.”

Mark Millar makes his Dark Horse

The creator will move his Millarworld line to the publisher next year.

Mark Millar will join Brian Michael Bendis, Matt Kindt, Stan Sakai and others as the latest creator to take their creator-owned work to Dark Horse Comics.

According to Forbes, the deal will see Millar and Dark Horse release five new titles in 2024, all under the “Millarworld” banner. Dark Horse will also collect previous Millarworld titles like The Magic Order and Night Club. Previously Millar’s creator-owned work was being published by Image Comics.

“Can I just say that I’ve been a Dark Horse fan since the beginning, and this has been a decades-long love affair finally consummated?” Millar said. “I’ve loved what Mike and the team have been doing for years and so many of my friends are over there, having a great time. I really just wanted to join the party and not only haul my massive, shelf-groaning library with me, but also commit to several years of really exciting stuff in the wake of our Big Game crossover event.”

Chu + Lee revisit the first vampire in ‘Carmilla: The Last Vampire Hunter’

Dark Horse will publish the sequel graphic novel next July.

Dark Horse Comics has announced a sequel to Carmilla: The First Vampire, the graphic novel by Amy Chu and Soo Lee published earlier this year. Carmilla: The Last Vampire Hunter will feature lettering by Sal Cipriano and will arrive in stores next July.

Based on a 19th century queer feminist murder mystery, Carmilla: The First Vampire was a contemporary retelling set in 1990s New York Chinatown. The new OGN follows social worker-turned-vampire hunter Athena Lo to San Francisco as she investigates her family’s dark history.

“Excited to continue the story of Athena and Carmilla, this time on the West Coast, and to introduce a whole new world of pan-Asian supernatural characters to the readers,” said Chu. “I hope with the Last Vampire, Soo Lee and I help define Asian American horror as a genre.”

The trip to SF will bring new challenges and introduce a new vampire threat — with the shadow of Carmilla still hanging over Athena. The book falsl under the Berger Books banner, the imprint overseen by former Vertigo chief Karen Berger.

“I’ve fallen in love with these characters as I bring them to life on paper, and Athena has a very special place in my heart,” said Lee. “Introducing a new cast of Asian Vampires creates a twist to the genre that I hope will become a new trend for many years to come. This story has become a part of me and this sequel is one I hope resonates with many people, especially if family is an important part of you.

Shawn Martinbrough will return to write Jason Todd again next year with Red Hood: The Hill, a miniseries that follows his work on the character’s previous series. Sanford Greene will draw the six-issue series.

Here’s how DC describes the series:

In Gotham City’s early days, The Hill was one of Gotham City’s most dangerous neighborhoods, one that required the residents to band together to keep themselves safe when the police – and sometimes even Batman – wouldn’t.

Now, as the Hill finds itself gentrifying, old habits die hard as the vigilante known only as Strike works with her team to keep the town safe—but she’s not alone. Jason Todd, one of the Hill’s newest residents, is more than happy to don the visage of Red Hood to help Strike keep his new home safe. But a new villain is emerging from the shadows. Will Red Hood, Strike and the Hill’s small militia of vigilantes be able to keep their home safe? This series features a main cover by series artist Greene, with a variant cover by Tirso Cons.

‘The Goon’ returns in a new miniseries next year

Eric Powell celebrates 25 years of comic’s favorite tough guy.

Last year we learned that Eric Powell’s Albatross Funnybooks would become an imprint of Dark Horse, which begged the question: when will The Goon return from Dark Horse?

Answer: Next March. Powell will write and draw and new Goon miniseries — The Goon: Them That Don’t Stay Dead — just in time for the character’s 25th anniversary.

“It only speaks to the depravity and moral bankruptcy of the average comic reader that I have been able to continue this reprehensible book (off and on) for 25 years. And I love them for it,” said Powell. “My enthusiasm for these characters hasn’t waned and I’m glad it seems the same goes for the loyal readers. And it’s also only fitting that this anniversary series coincides with its return to longtime publisher Dark Horse Comics. COMICS! HIGH FIVE! … (You’re not posting up. Don’t leave me hangin’.)”

Dark Horse puts out the call for more Ghostbusters

David Booher, Blue Delliquanti, Mildred Louis and Jimmy Betancourt bring the ghostbustin’ back to NYC next year.

The Ghostbusters team introduced in Ghostbusters: Afterlife will head back to where it all began in Ghostbusters: Back in Town.

Callie, Gary and company head to New York City in the new miniseries from Dark Horse Comics, as told by the stellar team of writer David Booher, artist Blue Delliquanti, colorist Mildred Louis and letterer Jimmy Betancourt of Comicraft. The miniseries also served as a prelude to Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, which arrives in theaters next year.

“Our friends at Dark Horse have picked up the Spengler family and hand delivered them to Manhattan where they will begin their journey back into Ghostbusting,” said Jason Reitman, director of Ghostbusters: Afterlife. “It has been a personal thrill to collaborate with this incredible group of artists and storytellers on new chapters in the proton jungle.”

Free Comic Book Day 2024 Gold sponsors include DC, Marvel and more

Free comics featuring Spider-Man, Hellboy, Jonny Quest, Encanto and more will be available next year on May 4.

Diamond has revealed the “Gold Sponsor” comic publishers and titles for Free Comic Book Day 2024, which includes Marvel, DC, Dark Horse and more. A dozen comics from the gold sponsors will be available during next year’s event, which is scheduled for May 4.

“We’re looking forward to another great year of celebrating comic books and comic book shops!” said Ashton Greenwood, Free Comic Book Day spokesperson. “This year’s lineup has a title for everyone. Whether you’re new to comics or a longtime reader, you’re sure to find a title that grabs your attention. And with the event falling on Star Wars Day this year, that adds a little extra excitement to the day!”

Interestingly, DC returns to the list for 2024, promoting an “exciting new project” that’ll be revealed at a later date. Since DC left Diamond back in 2020, they’ve participated in the event, but their books were not promoted by Diamond nor were they included on the Free Comic Book Day website.

Here’s a look at the gold sponsor titles, many of which are teasers rather than actual announcements. The extensive silver sponsor title list will be announced later this week.

Dark Horse announces the mech vs. kaiju comic ‘Dawnrunner’

Ram V, Evan Cagle, Dave Stewart and Aditya Bidikar helm the new title, which launches next spring.

Writer Ram V and artist Evan Cagle will team up for a new miniseries from Dark Horse Comics titled Dawnrunner, which tells the story of an Earth invaded by kaiju and the mech pilots who keep them at bay.

They’re joined by colorist Dave Stewart and letterer Aditya Bidikar for the five-issue series.
