DC launches ‘Let Them Live!’ on DC Universe Infinite

A lost Suicide Squad story written in 2011 surfaces on DC’s digital comics system.

When DC relaunched their DC Universe Infinite service last month, they promised exclusive content for subscribers. Today brought the first DCUI-exclusive comic, titled Let Them Live!: Unpublished Tales from the DC Vault, featuring a “lost” Suicide Squad story by Jim Zub, Tradd Moore, Felipe Sobreiro and Nate Piekos.

The story will be the first of several released by DC under this title, which seems like a way for them to clean out their files and share comics that were commissioned but never published. In fact, each issue will feature a framing sequence by Elliott Kalan, Mike Norton and Marissa Louise starring Ambush Bug — who has taken a job as a night janitor at the DC offices, where he finds the unreleased comics and provides commentary.

Future issues will include:

  • Let Them Live! #2 — a Nightwing story by Collin Kelly, Jackson Lanzing, Jorge Corona, Mat Lopes and Carlos M. Mangual — debuting Feb. 16 with a frame story by Elliott Kalan, Mike Norton and Marissa Louise. Let them Live! #3 — a Batman story by Scott Bryan Wilson, John Paul Leon, Dave Stewart and Deron Bennet — debuting 3/2 with a frame story by Elliott Kalan, Mike Norton and Marissa Louise.
  • Let them Live! #3 — a Batman story by Scott Bryan Wilson, John Paul Leon, Dave Stewart and Deron Bennet — debuting March 2 with a frame story by Elliott Kalan, Mike Norton and Marissa Louise.

Comics Lowdown | Alan Moore script on eBay

Plus: New graphic novels by the Mayor of Montreal and rapper Rico Nasty

Auction Watch: An unpublished Alan Moore script is being auctioned off on eBay. The 35-page script was written circa 1997 for a Wildstorm one-shot, Gen13 Annual: The Coming of the Collector!, which was never completed or published.

Scott Dunbier, who is auctioning off the script, acquired it when he was an editor at Wildstorm. Proceeds from the auction, which has Moore’s blessing, will benefit inker Bob Wiacek, who is suffering from vision problems that prevent him from working.

‘The One You Feed’ by Cates + Burnett debuts at Panel Syndicate

Pay what you want for the first digital issue of the new fantasy horror title.

The One You Feed, a new title by Donny Cates (Thor) and Dylan Burnett (Ant-Man) has debuted on Panel Syndicate.

The “fantasy terror tale” will be a five-issue miniseries, released digitally on the site in their standard “pay what you want format,” like they’ve done with previous titles like Friday, Barrier and The Private Eye.

DC announces changes for its ‘DC Universe’ app

As video content moves to HBO Max, ‘DC Universe Infinite’ will focus on comics.

As expected, DC announced changes this week to its DC Universe app, as it shifts from an “all-in-one” video/comic delivery system into one that focuses mainly on comics. The service was launched in 2018.

Original TV shows like Titans, Young Justice, Doom Patrol and Stargirl were once the big selling point of the platform, but all of those properties are finding new homes now, mostly on HBO Max, but also on The CW, in Stargirl‘s case. The release states that original shows and “classics” — as the app included many older DC movies and shows as well — will migrate to places like HBO Max, but the price point will stay the same. The service costs $7.99 a month, or $74.99 for one year (even with the loss of content).

“Our fans love the platform’s robust library of comic books and, with the transformation, we will not disappoint,” said DC Publisher and Chief Creative Officer Jim Lee. “I’m excited to share that not only will DC Universe Infinite members still be able to read all of the great comics that they’ve enjoyed but new issues are debuting on the platform quicker than before, digital first exclusives are being created, and the members-only events will begin as soon as possible. There has never been a better time to be a DC fan!”

comiXology Originals, Kodansha to release ‘Shaman King’ digitally

The entire saga — including three volumes never released in English — will hit comiXology on July 28.

Kodansha and comiXology originals announced this week that Hiroyuki Takei’s shonen manga Shaman Kings will arrive on the platform in its entirety on July 28.

“It’s been over 10 years since I’ve completed Shaman King. But finally –– at last –– I can deliver the true ending to the story to the fans in America,” said Shaman King creator Hiroyuki Takei in the press release. “It’s a message from my heart, and I think it’s a particularly important one in this day and age. I hope that it’ll reach the hearts of many comrades.”

Coffee, ghosts + romance: Christmas + Luiz team for ‘Crema’

The graphic novel by Johnnie Christmas, Dante Luiz and Ryan Ferrier arrives from comiXology Originals next week.

ComiXology Originals will drop another new graphic next week titled Crema. The digital release is by the creative team of Johnnie Christmas (Tartarus), Hugo-Award finalist Dante Luiz and letterer Ryan Ferrier.

“I wrote most of it in coffee shops around Vancouver, pounding copious amounts of caffeine and listening to hours of cafe talk,” Christmas said. “Dante’s art is beautiful. We were going for magical realism and fabulism in the modern context, utilizing color shifts in places to further heighten romance and ghostly terror.”

‘Virtually Yours’ by Holt + Beals arrives July 14 from comiXology Originals

The new graphic novel is a “rom-com for the digital age.’

ComiXology Originals has announced another new graphic novel that they plan to release July 14 — Virtually Yours, a “rom-com for the digital age” by writer Jeremy Holt and artist Elizabeth Beals, with lettering by Adam Wollet.

“If the quarantine has been an indicator, access to high-speed internet has become society’s lifeline. As connective as this new virtual landscape has and can be, it cannot replace the absence of interacting in a three-dimensional space,” Holt said in the press release. “Particularly when it comes to all stages of a romantic relationship. Virtually Yours focuses on one particular aspect, which is the notion that a simulated online connection can be equally as genuine as a random face-to-face one. In this day and age, I’d argue that they’ve become interchangeable. With the advent of robust chat software, online dating has evolved from simply facilitating an eventual in-person meet up to hosting dates in their entirety. This has dynamically altered our ideas, notions and expectations of courtship because the physicality component has been removed. Creative problem solving is the name of the game, and I for one support the notion of pioneering new and sustainable ways to be human.”

Marvel reverses decision on several ‘digital only’ titles

Issues of ‘Hawkeye: Freefall,’ ‘Ant-Man’ and more will now be printed.

After stating they would only release digital copies of several titles that were held up by the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent shutdown by Diamond Comics Distributors, Marvel has told retailers they will now release print copies of most of those titles, including issues of Hawkeye: Freefall, Ant-Man, Ghost Spider and Valkyrie: Jane Foster.

The Beat reports that Marvel sent a message to retailers this week that print copies of many of these titles would ship to them starting in August. The list of comics and their release dates are:

DC launches ‘Harley Quinn Black + White + Red’ digital series

The first issue of the anthology series features a new story by Stjepan Šejić.

DC launched a new digital series today, Harley Quinn Black + White + Red, an anthology series that will feature stories about Harley Quinn by a variety of creators. It’s kind of like Batman: Black & White, only with Harley Quinn. And the color red.

Stjepan Šejić, creator of the Black Label Harleen series, is featured in the first issue, which is available now. His story is set in that world.

“In Harleen canon, this story takes place after the fallout with the Joker and before the forming of the Sirens,” Šejić said. “A lot of stuff has happened in that time and some of it is hinted at in both her flashbacks and conversational nods.”

Marvel announces more digital-only titles

‘Scream: Curse of Carnage,’ ‘Valkyrie: Jane Foster’ and more will not be released as single print issues.

Marvel has announced plan to release additional titles that were originally slated to be print comics as digital-only titles. These include further issues of Hawkeye: Freefall, Ghost Spider and other titles that were released digitally over the last few weeks, with a few new additions, like Valkyrie: Jane Foster and Scream: Curse of Carnage.

“These comics will only be available as digital comics for the time being; however, they will be available in print collections later this year for fans looking to add them to their Marvel bookshelves,” according to the story on Marvel.com.

New ‘DCeased’ story launches on digital today

‘DCeased: Hope at World’s End’ sets the stage for next month’s ‘DCeased: Dead Planet’ series.

DC Comics’ popular DCeased comics made a surprise return today, as a new digital comic featuring the “zombiefied” versions of DC’s heroes shambled onto digital platforms today.

DCeased: Hope At World’s End is now available across multiple platforms, including ReadDC.com, Comixology, Amazon Kindle, Apple Books and the DC Universe app.

“There was a point in DCeased where we had to make the decision to skip weeks of losses and triumphs and heroism or our first miniseries wouldn’t exactly be a miniseries,” said writer Tom Taylor in a press release. “But we knew we had a larger story to tell, so we seeded plots we could expand on and deliberately left huge characters off the table for the future. That future is here.”

Shalvey, Camp, Topilin contribute to Quarantine Comix

The imprint started by the “Ice Cream Man” team kicks off a new “Quarantine Comix Guest Series.”

Along with Animal Crossing and a new season of Dead to Me, the weekly Quarantine Comix releases have been one of the highlights of the coronavirus pandemic. Created by the team behind Image’s Ice Cream Man anthology series, they’ve now broadened their umbrella to include guest contributors through the aptly named Quarantine Comix Guest Series.

The first two guest comics are by Declan Shalvey of Moon Knight and Savage Town fame, and the team of Deniz Camp (Maxwell’s Demons) and Artyom Topilin(Long Rain).
