It’s the 1990s all over again this November

DC goes all in on celebrating the 1990s in November, but they aren’t the only ones willing to get ‘extreme.’

The decade of pouches, big guns, variant covers and Image Comics will come back in a big way this November at DC — and on a smaller scale at Marvel. Both publishers will get “extreme” in their own ways later this year.

Let’s start with DC, who earlier this week announced a new Black Label Batman miniseries by none other than Marc Silvestri. Silvestri of course is one of the founders of Image Comics and is one of the names synonymous with 1990s comics, when he launched Top Cow and introduced the world to Witchblade, CyberForce, The Darkness and many other comics.

Batman/The Joker: The Deadly Duo finds the caped crusader teaming up with his worst enemy.

“Batman and The Joker are two of the world’s most iconic characters and have been at each other’s throats for more than 80 years,” Silvestri said. “I always thought is would be pretty entertaining to have them on the same side, so I wrote a story about it. Needless to say, stuff happens.”

Fund Me Sunday | Top Cow celebrates 30 years of ‘Cyberforce’

Pledge today to get a hardcover edition of ‘Cyberforce Complete Collection Volume 1.’

Top Cow is celebrating the 30th anniversary of the debut of Marc Silvestri’s Cyberforce with a crowdfunding project for a hardcover collecting many of the early stories featuring the characters.

The project is already live on Kickstarter and has blown well past its $30,000 goal, with more than $100,000 raised thus far.

The collection will include Silvestri’s original Cyberforce series from 1994, which has never been collected, in addition to volume 2 of the series, several miniseries and one-shots, and a crossover with Jim Lee’s WildCATS. In addition to Silverstri and Lee, the hardcover will feature early Image work by Todd McFarlane, Walter Simonson, David Finch, Joe Chiodo, Scott Williams, Brian Haberlin, Joe Benitez and Michael Turner.

DC confirms Marc Silvestri’s Batman project

‘Batman/Joker: The Deadly Duo’ will feature the Dark Knight and the Clown Prince of Crime teaming up.

Marc Silvestri’s long-rumored Batman project is a go at DC Comics, as the publisher confirmed this week in San Diego that the Cyberforce creator is working on Batman/Joker: The Deadly Duo.

No word yet on exactly when it will come out, but Silvestri said the book will be about seven and a half issues long and will feature someone “screwing” with the Joker, according to The Beat. Batman is forced to team up with the Joker when this mysterious person kidnaps Jim Gordon.

‘Cyber Force’ reloads in 2018

An Image Comics original returns next year as Marc Silvestri’s Cyber Force reboots in March, courtesy of Matt Hawkins, Bryan Hill and Atilio Rojo.

“I’ve always loved Cyber Force,” said Hawkins. “These heroes are more technologically based, and we’re very close to transhumanism as it is! This story has a philosophical slant to it that is very appropriate to the changing times we’re in.”

Kittredge, Ingranata help Top Cow unsheathe the ‘Witchblade’

One of Top Cow’s signature titles returns in December.

Top Cow has announced that they’ve recruited writer Caitlin Kittredge, artist Roberta Ingranata and colorist Bryan Valenza to create a new Witchblade series, featuring the sword-wielding character created by Marc Silvestri, Brian Haberlin, Michael Turner and David Wohl. The new series starts in December.

“Everywhere you look in the real world, you’ll see a hero. Not the kind that wears a cape and flies around a comic page or across the big screen but the kind you see walking around being kind of unremarkable. Basically people. People that, when given the choice, will simply do the right thing. Because that’s what a hero does,” said Silvestri. “Doing the right thing isn’t always easy, as it often means being selfless. Without hesitation. But again, that’s what a hero does. Our most enduring superheroes come from this simple idea: people choosing to do the right thing. People like the wielders of the Witchblade.”
