Doug Wright Awards honor Jesse Jacobs, Jenn Woodhall, Sami Alwani

Editorial cartoonist Duncan Macpherson was inducted into the Giants of the North Canadian cartoonist hall of fame during TCAF weekend.

A trio of first-time winners took home trophies from the Doug Wright Awards, presented yesterday during the Toronto Comics Arts Festival.

The Doug Wright Awards honor “the best work and most promising talent in Canadian comics.” Check out the winners below:

Nominees announced for the 2018 Doug Wright Awards

Guy Delisle, Connor Willumsen, Joe Ollmann and many more nominated for this year’s awards.

Nominees for the 14th annual Doug Wright Awards have been announced by the nominating committee. The Doug Wright Awards honor “the best work and most promising talent in Canadian comics.”

Duncan Macpherson, editorial cartoonist at the Montreal Standard, Toronto Star and Maclean’s magazine over the course of five decades, is this year’s inductee to the Giants of the North, the Doug Wright Awards’ hall of fame. Macpherson passed away in 1993. You can read more about him on the Doug Wright website.

Comics Lowdown: Creator Eleanor Davis arrested in Georgia protest

Cartoonist Eleanor Davis was one of eight people arrested at a Georgia Board of Regents meeting on May 16 for protesting the board’s policies with regard to undocumented immigrants. The University of Georgia does not allow undocumented immigrants to attend its five best schools and requires them to pay out-of-state tuition at the others. The protestors, described by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution as “a mix of faith leaders and current and former University System of Georgia students,” were taken to the Fulton County Jail. Davis’s husband, Drew Weing, reported on his Facebook page that she had been released after the Georgia Civil Disobedience Fund paid her bail. Davis’s newest book, You & a Bike & a Road, has just been published by Koyama Press, and Slate ran an excerpt on Tuesday—showing a man being arrested at the border.

TCAF: Translator stopped at Canadian border

While en route to the Toronto Comic Arts Festival (TCAF), translator and agent Anne Ishii was detained at Billy Bishop Airport in Toronto for over two hours yesterday as Canadian customs officers questioned her and went through every book in her luggage to determine whether she was bringing comics illegally into the country.

TCAF: Koyama Press announces Fall 2017 titles

As Brigid mentioned earlier today, Annie Koyama’s Koyama Press is celebrating its 10th year at the Toronto Comic Arts Festival. As part of that celebration, the publisher announced its Fall 2017 line of graphic novels.
