Bunn + Scharf reunite for supernatural horror series ‘Basilisk’

The new series debuts from BOOM! Studios in June.

Following the news of Parasomnia this week comes another horror-themes series written by Cullen Bunn — Basilisk, where he reunites with his Bone Parish collaborator Jonas Scharf for a new supernatural horror series from BOOM! Studios.

They’re joined by colorist Alex Guimarães and letterer Ed Dukeshire.

Basilisk is an epic, dark, fantasy horror story, and I can’t wait for readers to meet the players on both sides of this tale of revenge. Here we have a woman who has absolutely nothing left to lose hunting down a group of would-be gods, each of whom can use one of the five senses to destroy those around them. They’re terrifying in their own way–the heroes and the villains,” said Bunn. “This is another collaboration with the amazing Jonas Scharf, who worked with me on Bone Parish, and I think his work here is even more amazing, even more deific, even more haunting.”

The four-issue miniseries from Dark Horse details one man’s journey through a nightmarish dreamscape.

Cullen Bunn and Andrea Mutti set off on a horrific adventure through the land of nightmares in the new miniseries Parasomnia.

Parasomnia is an eerie dark fantasy adventure. Part of it is set in our world–the waking world–and part of it is set… someplace else,” Bunn said. “A land of ruthless highwaymen and forgotten gods and fierce monsters. It’s a little bit sword and sorcery, a little bit mystery, a little horror, and a whole lot of action adventure.”

Marvel announces ‘Immortal Hulk’ spinoff ‘Gamma Flight’

Puck, Rick Jones, Titania and more join forces in the new series.

Puck, Titania, Absorbing Man, Doc Sasquatch and Rick Jones will assemble under a familiar name with a clever twist: Gamma Flight. The spinoff from Immortal Hulk will be written by Al Ewing and Crystal Frasier, who have worked together previously on Immortal Hulk, with art by Lan Medina.

Gamma Flight is an opportunity to explore some of the concepts and plant some of the seeds from Immortal Hulk in their own space, building off the found family that came together in those pages and putting them into action against some strange and ugly doings in the unexplored corners of the gamma world,” Ewing told Marvel.com. “We’ve been ricocheting ideas off each other for a while on this one, and I suspect the result is something that’ll tickle Hulk fans old and new.”

‘Black Hammer’ returns with a new art team in June

‘Black Hammer: Reborn’ will feature art by Caitlin Yarsky, Dave Stewart, Malachi Ward and Matt Sheean, who will work with writer/co-creator Jeff Lemire.

Jeff Lemire and Dean Ormston’s Black Hammer series will return later this year with a new ongoing series, Black Hammer: Reborn, but Ormston won’t be drawing it.

Instead, artist Caitlin Yarsky will join Lemire for the first four issues of the new series, which picks up 20 years after the events of the previous story arc, Age of Doom. Dave Stewart will color it. Malachi Ward and Matt Sheean will then draw issues #5-8.

The new series will focus on Lucy Weber, who took up her father’s mantle and became the new Black Hammer. But what happened to Ormston? Don’t worry — Lemire revealed in his email newsletter that Ormston is drawing a sister title to Black Hammer: Reborn, which will focus on the character Madame Butterfly. He said it would launch later this year.

Tobin + Mutti deliver horror with ears in ‘Bunny Mask’

The new series from AfterShock Comics launches in June.

Eisner winner Paul Tobin will return to the horror genre for a new series from AfterShock Comics, titled Bunny Mask. The writer of Colder and Bandette will team up with Maniac of New York artist Andrea Mutti for a horror title with an adorable name.

“Bunny Mask is the story of Tyler Severin, who—due to traumatic incident—uncovers and releases Bunny Mask herself, an ancient, supernatural creature, incredibly powerful and possibly evil, but the thing is…she likes him,” Tobin said. “It’s almost as if she’s imprinted on Tyler, since he helped her ‘hatch.’ The series is about the ripple effects, or more honestly the tsunami effects, on Tyler’s life and the world.”

Emgård + Aira reunite for the supernatural war story ‘The Secret Land’

The four-issue miniseries begins in June.

Christofer Emgård and Tomás Aira, creators of the supernatural war story The Whispering Dark, will reunite for The Secret Land, another miniseries coming from Dark Horse Comics.

The story follows a soldier at the end of World War II who learns his believed-to-be-dead fiancée is still alive and undercover in Antarctica, where the Germans plot their return to power.

“Ever since The Whispering Dark I’ve been looking to reprise my collaboration with Tomás, and The Secret Land finally provided the perfect opportunity,” Emgård said. “This mini-series began life as a pulpy horror tale (it does have both Nazis and tentacles in it…), but at its core it’s really a story about commitment, longing and loss. I feel Tomás has conveyed this beautifully through his evocative art and I hope the readers out there will feel the same.”

Doug Wagner and Daniel Hillyard, the creators of Plastic, are teaming up again on Vinyl, a new miniseries from Image Comics. They’ll be joined by colorist Dave Stewart for a comic about serial killers, death cults and friendship.

“This is all Daniel Hillyard’s fault,” said Wagner. “He asked if I thought we could create a story about serial killers, inhuman monsters and a cult of sunflower farmers all trapped together inside an underground bunker. I mean, you have to do that, right?”

Dark Horse puts a hit out on ‘Mafiosa’ in October

The story follows a mafia family’s youngest daughter and her quest to join the family business.

Dark Horse has announced they’ve acquired Mafiosa, the story of a mafia family’s youngest daughter deciding to join the family business. The comic, which started life on Kickstarter, will be published as a trade paperback in October.

The story was developed by Thomas Brooke of Portland’s Rainwerks Studio, and was created by Sunshine Barbito, Alessia Alfano, Débora Caritá, Ronda Pattison and Mariacristina Federica.

“What draws me into the world of organized crime is the juxtaposition of tradition, loyalty, hyper-morality, and what boils down to murderous greed,” Barbito said. “We wanted to take this familiar and popular storytelling genre; set in the roaring ’20s, but show you this world from a different perspective in order to create a dialogue. For me, this story is about desire and how it affects people once it takes over completely.”
