Tim Seeley’s ‘Hack/Slash’ returns with new series, Vampirella crossover

New creative team takes the reigns on the next chapter of Cassie Hack’s story.

Cassie Hack, the star of Hack/Slash comics, is coming back swinging in a big way, as Image Comics announces a new series and Dynamite Entertainment announces a crossover with Vampirella.

“Hack/Slash is the book people always ask me about,” said creator Tim Seeley. “I’ve been waiting for the proper time to bring it back, but I wanted to make sure I had the perfect creators first. Now that I have them, it’s time to unleash Cassie Hack on the world again.”

Panosian goes for broke in Skybound’s ‘Slots’

Dan Panosian will write and draw a new series about a former boxer looking for redemption in Las Vegas.

Dan Panosian’s gritty, “dirty ’70s” art style is heading to the perfect locale, Las Vegas, for his new series Slots. Panosian will write and draw the new series from Skybound/Image Comics, which is due out in October.

“Producing this story is really a dream come true for me, and I have Image Comics and Skybound to thank for the experience,” said Panosian. “People throw the term ‘labor of love’ around pretty often, but every aspect of creating Slots has been a true joy for me. I’m very happy we can finally announce and share it with everyone.”

‘Spy Seal’ enlists Joey Weiser’s ‘Ninja Fukuroh’ as a back-up feature

Rich Tommaso takes Weiser up on his offer to draw a back-up story for his new comic.

Back when Rich Tommaso started talking about Spy Seal, before it became an upcoming comic from Image, he shared several images of the character online that drew rave reviews from fans and fellow creators. One of those creators was Joey Weiser, creator of the really fun Oni Press graphic novel series Mermin, who offered (perhaps jokingly) to draw a back-up series for the comic:

Live Through This: ‘Royal City’ homages ’90s alternative album covers

Jeff Lemire recruits Jeffrey Brown, Emi Lenox, Nate Powell and more to pay tribute to album covers by Weezer, Hole and more.

The second story arc for Jeff Lemire’s excellent Royal City will take the Pike family back to the early 1990s, and to help set the mood, Lemire has enlisted a bunch of great artists to draw music album tribute covers.

“This new arc takes a major shift as the story jumps back to the year 1993 and we follow the last week in the life of Tommy Pike!” Lemire wrote on his blog. “Meet the Pike siblings when they were all just teenagers in the 90’s and the tragedy that will come to haunt their family is still in the future.”

Sharknife returns in Corey Lewis’ ‘Sun Bakery’ #5

The popular character who previously appeared in two graphic novels makes his triumphant return in August.

Corey Lewis’ infectiously fun restaurant defender, Sharknife, will return in the creator’s Sun Bakery anthology this summer.

Last seen in 2012, Sharknife previously appeared in two graphic novels published by Oni Press. An employee of The Guandong Factory, Caesar Hallelujah protects the restaurant from the monsters that live inside its walls by transforming into the heroic Sharknife — much to the delight of the establishment’s customers.

Image Comics pulls ‘Divided States of America’ #4 cover after widespread criticism

After criticism from creators and fans, Image Comics announced that they would not use the controversial cover to Divided States of America #4 that was originally solicited. Instead, they will use the planned cover for issue #6 on issue #4.

The quick version:

1. Released with Image Comics’ September 2017 solicitations, the original cover to Divided States of Hysteria #4 featured an image of a Pakistani man being lynched, his pants down with his genitals mutilated, and a name tag with the slur “Paki” on it.

2. The cover was met with criticism from creators, fans and critics; these reactions followed quickly on the heels of negative reactions to the first issue and its portrayal of a trans sex worker being attacked.

3. Image Comics released a response over the weekend, which included the announcement that they would not use the original cover, replacing it with what would have been the cover for issue #6.

So what’s this all about? Let’s break it down …

Newlyweds fight boll weevils, drug cartels in ‘Gasolina’

Skybound editor Sean Mackiewicz teams with Niko Walter, Mat Lopes and Rus Wooton for horror-crime series.

Readers of The Walking Dead or Invincible are likely familiar with Sean Mackiewicz, editorial director for Skybound, who can be found on both book’s letters pages. But responses to questions about when Daryl’s going to show up aren’t the only thing Mackiewicz is writing; he’s also branching out and writing a new comic called Gasolina, with artist Niko Walter, colorist Mat Lopes and letterer Rus Wooton.

“So, the pitch: Gasolina is a horror-crime epic set in Mexico, full of gun fights against cartels armed with tanks and perverse creatures… shot through the eyes of newlyweds fighting against a world quickly going to hell, who put a human face on a conflict that’s both harrowing and outrageous,” Mackiewicz wrote on the Skybound site. “The short version: shit goes down.”

‘Scales & Scoundrels’ brings all-ages fantasy to Image Comics

Sebastian Girner, Galaad and Jeff Powell team up to tell ‘the adventure of a lifetime.’

Editor and Shirtless Bear-Fighter co-writer Sebastian Girner trades bears for dragons in Scales & Scoundrels, a new all-ages fantasy title he’s working on with artist Galaad and letterer/designer Jeff Powell. The series debuts in September from Image Comics.

“Scales & Scoundrels is a dream project for Galaad, Jeff and myself,” Girner said in a press release. “We are crafting a deep and wondrous world for readers to get lost in, creating heroes, villains and rogues to love and loathe, and spinning tales that will delight and entertain, shock and inspire. A fantasy adventure comic for readers of all ages to escape into, and bring a piece of magic back with them into their lives.”

The series stars a treasure hunter named Luvander who heads into a dungeon crawl called “the Dragon’s Maw.” But, per the release, “what starts out as a road to riches becomes the first step on an epic journey of a much different kind—for Luvander holds a secret in her heart that will shatter the chains of fate and bring light to a world encroached upon by an ancient darkness.”

Peck, Haun team for post-apocalyptic fantasy series ‘The Realm’

New series from Image Comics launches in September.

Former “X-Men” writer Seth Peck is teaming with “The Beauty” artist Jeremy Haun on “The Realm,” a story about a post-apocalyptic Earth invaded by orcs, dragons and other Dungeons and Dragons monsters.

“Creator-owned comics are the only place you can tell stories like ‘The Realm’ exactly as you want them to be told,” Peck said in a statement. “You can have an F-14 take on a dragon in the skies over Chicago, or have a horde of orcs lay siege to the White House without worrying about special effects or budgets. At the same time, you can tell very intimate, emotional, and human stories and develop complicated, meaningful characters over the course of time. With ‘The Realm,’ Jeremy and I wanted to blend all the genres we enjoy, mix in plenty of action, and give readers something unique and exciting to look forward to each month.”

The duo will work with colorist Nick Filardi and letterer Thomas Mauer on the project, which launches in September.

“’The Realm’ is the book I’ve wanted to do my entire life,” said Haun. “It’s the perfect mash of everything I love to draw. Post-apocalyptic landscapes, dark magical citadels, machine gun-toting barbarians, unnamable horrors, DRAGONS—it doesn’t get more fun than this.”

‘Rocket Girl’ returns in August

Brandon Montclare and Amy Reeder’s time-traveling teen returns this summer.

Brandon Montclare and Amy Reeder’s Kickstarter-turned-Image Comics series “Rocket Girl” returns in August with issue #8.

“I don’t mean to sound alarmist, but everything we’ve done so far with ‘Rocket Girl’ has been leading up to these next few, completed issues,” said Reeder in a press release. “Major things are about to happen! And I for one wouldn’t want to hear the gossip second-hand at the water cooler.”

“Rocket Girl” debuted back in 2013, following a successful Kickstarter for the first issue. The book stars DaYoung Johansson, a teenaged cop from the future who goes back to 1986 to investigate “crimes against time.” The project followed the duo’s work on “Halloween Eve” and preceded their all-ages Marvel title, “Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur.”

Negan’s origin story collected this October

“The Walking Dead” villain’s story from Image+ gets collected this fall.

The baddest bad guy from “The Walking Dead” started life on a different path, as Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlard revealed in the pages of Image+ magazine. Now that story is being collected in “Here’s Negan!” this October, as Image Comics gives Lucille’s main man the hardcover treatment.
