The Wonder Woman movie has lots of people looking at the history of the character and how she has evolved over the years. The Fresh Toast has a great interview with Trina Robbins, the first woman to draw Wonder Woman and a pioneering underground comics artist and comics historian as well. She’s a delightful person who has had a fascinating life, and this interview is a great way to start off your week.

Tee Franklin knows something that seems to eluded all of the Marvel honchos: How to make money on a comic by and about people of color. Franklin’s Bingo Love Comic, the story of a long-simmering romance between two black women, blasted past its Kickstarter goal of $20,000 in just five days and ended up with over $57,000 worth of pledges. This all happened just a few weeks after Marvel vice president David Gabriel told ICv2 “What we heard was that people didn’t want any more diversity …They didn’t want female characters. That’s what we heard, whether we believe that or not.” Although he backpedaled a bit, Gabriel’s comments raised a ruckus, but Franklin has some advice for him and the rest of the Marvel team: Draw inspiration from the women around you, hire people of color for your creative teams and advertise in channels that actually reach your prospective audience.

• James Cavanaugh, the owner of Clint’s Comics in Kansas City, Missouri, was killed while attempting to stop a robbery at his store on May 12. According to the Kansas City Star, Cavanaugh was chasing a man who had just stolen about 10 or 15 comics from the shop, according to witnesses. He reached the thief’s car and pulled a gun; somehow the passenger side door opened and when the thief drove away, the door hit Cavanaugh, knocking him to the ground and critically injuring him. Police are still searching for the thief, who was described as a bald, 40-ish white man with glasses; the store posted a photo of the car on Facebook.

Limited-time Pokémon Go lures sponsored by Valiant will be dropped at 11 retailers in New York and California.
In a move that would make Team Mystic proud, Valiant has announced they are sponsoring “special Pokémon Go sponsorship program” to lure potential new readers into comic shops in New York and California.
According to the press release, Pokémon Go players can “join the excitement as your local comic shop transforms into your next PokéStop when Valiant drops Pokémon Go Lures at a slate of specially designated comic book retailers.” If you aren’t familiar with the worldwide sensation that is Pokémon Go, the virtual-reality-meets-actual-reality game combines the popular “Gotta catch’em all” collector’s drive that naturally comes with the Pokémon franchise with getting off the couch and walking around. Some have already suggested using it as a way to lure folks to polling places this November, so why not comic shops as well?
