Like DC, Marvel is kicking the crossovers into gear for the summer, with August bringing the first issues of DNX and the new Midnight Universe line, as well as mroe of the Queen in Black and Avengers: Armageddon. There are also several milestone issues, not the least of which is Amazing Spider-Man #1000.

Slugfest | Static joins the Titans, Batman gets some help + more in DC’s August solicitations

DC will end the summer with two different crossovers featuring their two biggest characters, as Batman and Gotham are engaged in the Bad Seeds crossover and Superman returns just in time for another showdown with the forces of General Zod. August also brings another Batman and Robin: Year One series from the superstar team of Mark Waid and Chris Samnee, and all the “Next Level” titles, including Batwoman, Zatanna and Deathstroke, will be featured in Next Level: One Shot #1, a single round fired by Deadshot.

The middle of the summer is a big month for Marvel, as they’ll have two major crossovers going on at the time: Avengers: Armageddon and Queen in Black, bringing together the “Al Ewingverse” titles — Venom and Mortal Thor.

That’s already a packed summer, but is only the tip of the iceberg. There’s plenty of other new stuff hitting in July. So let’s start with the return of Miles Morales, who comes back from a brief hiatus with a new #1, new creative team anda return to his classic costume.

Miles Morales: Spider-Man #1 puts Ultimate Black Panther writer Bryan Edward Hill and artist Nico Leon in charge of the younger Spider-Man’s adventures, and they are picking up after Miles’ adventures in the Ultimate Universe with a story that hits close to home, as his father’s past as a SHIELD agent comes back to bite the whole family.

“I was really humbled when Marvel contacted me because Miles Morales is such an important character to people,” Hill said. “No one knows, but I’m a HUGE Spider-Man and Spider-Verse fan, so I’m going all out here with new villains, new allies, thrilling action and a real exploration of that essential struggle of being a hero and maintaining a life connected to others.”

Action Comics will hit a big milestone in July as it reaches issue #1100 — following several months behind Detective Comics, which hit issue #1100 last year. The oversized issue will feature stories from creators from across the Superman titles, including Mark Waid, Skylar Patridge, Sophie Campbell, Joshua Williamson, Dan Mora, Dan Slott and more.

Writer Steve Foxe and artist Salva Espin, who collaborated on the prelude comic series for X-Men ’97‘s first season, reunite for X-Men ’97: Season Two, a five-issue limited series bridging the gap between the acclaimed animated show’s first and second seasons. The series picks up in the immediate aftermath of Season One’s cliffhanger ending, following the X-Men left behind in a world that hunts and hates mutantkind while the rest of the team is scattered across time. Colors are by Matt Milla.

“Everyone who watched Season One knows the team left us one heck of an era-spanning cliffhanger, and our prequel for Season Two doesn’t take any cheats or shortcuts around that wild status quo,” Foxe said. “We got to work closely with the series team to make sure this comic is a vital, additive experience for our mutants — what’s left of the X-Men, anyway.”

As announced at this weekend’s Emerald City Comic Con, Dark Horse Comics will publish Dungeons & Dragons: Total Party Killers, a four-issue series arriving in July that flips the script and makes the monsters the heroes.

Written by Christopher Hastings and illustrated by Denis Medri, the series follows a lycanthrope, gelatinous cube, mind flayer, death knight and baby beholder who must band together to protect the lair of their recently deceased wizard master — or find a way to trick someone into setting them free.

Marvel not only revealed news on several upcoming comics projects at last week’s ComicsPro meeting, but also released their solicitations for May as well. So here’s a look at several of the new projects they’ll release in May, along with a few other comics for later in the year that have come to light.

Starting off, Marvel Comics will publish Civil War: Unmasked, a five-issue limited series revisiting the 2006 event. Written by Christos Gage with art by Edgar Salazar and colors by original Civil War colorist Morry Hollowell, the series tells previously unseen stories set before, during and after the events of the original crossover, spotlighting Iron Man, Spider-Man, Goliath, Tigra and Captain America.

The first issue sends Tony Stark on a mission into the Days of Future Past timeline, where a glimpse of an apocalyptic future forces him to reconsider everything he believed about the Superhuman Registration Act.

Ignition Press launches supernatural action thriller ‘Bad Thoughts’ in May

Ignition Press will publish Bad Thoughts, a new series from writer Ande Parks (Extraction) and artist Dave Wachter (Godzilla), beginning May 27. The series follows Jack Coates, a private security operative with the ability to look inside people’s minds and see every terrible thing they’ve ever thought or done, a gift that serves him well until he puts his trust in the wrong people.

Dark Horse Comics and Mattel have announced He-Man and the Masters of the Universe: The Wings of Fate, a four-issue series set in the universe of the upcoming live-action Masters of the Universe film from Amazon MGM Studios, arriving in U.S. theaters June 5.

Written by Tim Sheridan and illustrated by Will Sliney, the series launches in comic shops June 10, which is five days after the film’s domestic release. The story follows a refugee who shelters an injured falcon and must journey through the Mystic Mountains to save her life.
