Review | Clover Press delivers a swingin’ look at Spider-Man’s newspaper adventures

Clover Press’s first collection of Spider-Man’s classic newspaper strip captures a fun, accessible chapter in the wall-crawler’s history.

Clover Press’s first volume of The Amazing Spider-Man: Classic Newspaper Comics is an engaging artifact of a pivotal period in the character’s history. Produced by the foundational Spidey team of writer Stan Lee and penciller John Romita, the strip debuted almost 50 years ago, on January 3, 1977. Volume one, which covers that calendar year, presents a series of arcs that certainly feel like Spider-Man, just with the format and rhythms of daily installments.

Of course, by the time this strip started, Lee and Romita had both moved on from the Amazing Spider-Man comic book. During 1977, writer Len Wein and penciller Ross Andru headed up ASM (issues #166-178), while penciller Sal Buscema and an assortment of writers were getting its companion title, Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man, off the ground (issues #4-16).

In hindsight, 1977 was part of a transitional period for the character. Following Gwen Stacy’s death four years earlier, Peter had started seeing Mary Jane Watson regularly, while Spidey faced off in ASM against C- and D-listers like Stegron, Will O’ The Wisp, Rocket Racer, the Molten Man, and a non-Osborn Green Goblin. Things were a little more original over in PPTSSM, which guest-starred the White Tiger and introduced Razorback. Maybe the biggest news was on CBS, where the first Amazing Spider-Man TV movie premiered on September 14.

Marvel’s September is shaping up with some big releases, not the least of which is issue #1000 of Amazing Spider-Man.

Marvel revealed the issue’s cover back in May, and it seems like everyone’s got an opinion on it. Drawn by legendary Marvel artist John Romita Jr. and colored by Paolo Rivera, the cover featured Spider-Man either swinging or shrugging, depending on who you asked. Both artists have plenty of Spider-Man on their resumes, and in Romita’s case, it’s in his blood, so they seem like natural choices to mark this milestone. But, y’know, it’s the internet, and it can be loud, or at leats seem loud when you’re in the crosshairs.

Exclusive | Clover Press reveals rewards for Amazing Spider-Man Newspaper Comics Kickstarter

Ahead of the campaign launch, Clover Press reveals two new collectibles accompanying its latest collections of the classic ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ newspaper strips from 1981-1984.

Clover Press is heading back to the newspaper pages of the 1980s again with another Kickstarter campaign collecting more of The Amazing Spider-Man newspaper comic strip.

Following the success of last year’s crowdfunding campaign collecting the strip’s earliest years, Clover Press is continuing its archival reprint program with four new softcover volumes collecting every Amazing Spider-Man newspaper strip published between 1981 and 1984.

“By the early 1980s, Spider-Man was firmly established on the newspaper page,” said Clover Press Publisher Hank Kanalz. “Following the success of our campaign to collect the first four years of The Amazing Spider-Man Newspaper Comic, we are thrilled to continue the line. The strips from 1981 to 1984 feature a more seasoned wall-crawler navigating longer, more intricate storylines that balance action, emotional drama and classic Peter Parker misfortune.”

Written by Stan Lee and drawn by Larry Lieber, Fred Kida and Floro Dery, these strips delivered a unique blend of superhero action, soap-opera drama and offbeat storylines. Peter Parker had encounters with killer robots, Doctor Doom’s flying saucer, the Spider Brigade and even the unforgettable Spidey Jeans craze.

Today, we can exclusively reveal two new campaign extras: the cover to an upcoming pocket book facsimile edition and a brand-new lithograph print available to backers.

Marvel says ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ #1000 will be the ‘biggest issue in Spider-history’

Joe Kelly, Pepe Larraz, John Romita Jr., Frank Miller, Stuart Immonen, Brian Michael Bendis, Dan Slott and more will contribute to the oversized issue.

Marvel has revealed more details about Amazing Spider-Man #1000, which will arrive in August.

The big milestone issue will feature a main story by Joe Kelly and Pepe Larraz, which will introduce a new villain named Ravage and promises to “change Peter Parker’s life forever.” It’ll also feature contributions from many creators who have worked on the character in the past, as well as some new to the character, including John Romita Jr., Frank Miller, Stuart Immonen, Brian Michael Bendis, Dan Slott, J.M. DeMatteis, Patrick Gleason, Marcos Martin, Peach Momoko and, in his Marvel debut, screenwriter Noah Hawley.

“Writing Amazing Spider-Man #1000 has stirred up a lot of emotions for me, but gratitude is chief among them,” Kelly said. “It’s a true honor to have the opportunity to contribute to Spidey’s legacy with a huge milestone like this. And special bonus – we get to introduce a new villain?! Amazing. Ravage is layered and complex and mysterious, and I can’t wait to unleash him on the readers with this monumental issue!”

Can’t Wait for Saturday | Free Comic Book Day + Comics Giveaway Day edition

See what’s available at your local comic shop this Saturday.

Comicdom’s biggest day of the year returns on Saturday, albeit in a new form. As Mark Briscoe might say, the word of the day is “bifurcation.” The event we once knew as Free Comic Book Day and was run by Diamond Comics has been split into two as a result of their bankruptcy and the sale of their assets.

In one corner, you still have Free Comic Book Day, with new owner Universal Distribution and their partner, Lunar Distribution. In the other, you have Comics Giveaway Day, an upstart that came into being when Penguin Random House decided they wanted to participate in giving out free comics, but apparently not in the official “Free Comic Book Day” event. Net-net for fans, there will be free comics on Saturday from a host of different publishers at many comic shops, some with one logo, some with another. Either way, free comics!

So where do you get these free comics? At your local comic shop, of course — if they are participating. The Free Comic Book Day website still has a store locator you can use to find a participating retailer. Comics Giveaway Day does not have a dedicated website, but you can find more details on the PRH website, which has a Google Maps link detailing participating stores.

Many publishers use the event as an opportunity to reshare a recent favorite title or offer a prelude to an upcoming storyline or crossover. Still other will produce something wholly original or introduce a brand new title. I’ve pulled out a few that look interesting to me below. Some things to keep in mind:

  • Not every retailer may have every title. Depending on their shop, they may elect to only have titles they think will excite their clientele.
  • Some retailers may limit the number of free comics you can take, while others may require a purchase.
  • Speaking of which, while titles are free to consumers, they are not free to retailers. So you may want to think about buying some other comics while you’re there regardless.
  • Some of the titles will also be available digitally, in case you can’t make it out on Saturday. So be sure to check your favorite digital comics site on Saturday as well.

Marvel recognizes Disability Pride Month in July with a backup story running through four titles

Marieke Nijkamp and Andrea Di Vito bring together Daredevil, Misty Knight, Echo, Hawkeye and others to save Colleen Wing.

Marvel will mark Disability Pride Month this July with a serialized backup story running through four titles.

Written by Dutch author Marieke Nijkamp and illustrated by Andrea Di Vito, the story unfolds across Amazing Spider-Man #32, Uncanny X-Men #31, Fantastic Four #14 and Wolverine #24, bringing together a lineup of heroes with a range of disabilities, including Daredevil, Misty Knight, Echo, Hawkeye, Silhouette and Finesse, to save Misty’s partner Colleen Wing from a deadly threat.

Nijkamp, who is autistic, previously contributed to Marvel with a story in 2023’s Marvel’s Voices: Pride special. The writer described the project as a genuine dream assignment.

“It may sound a bit cheesy to say this is a dream project, but for these stories, I got to bring together a roster of spectacular heroes and write an epic adventure that’s all about strength in community. It really is a dream come true,” Nijkamp said.

Miles Morales, Spider-Gwen + more enroll in ‘Spider-Versity’

Class is in session this April.

If you’ve been keeping up with Amazing Spider-Man, you know that while Peter Parker went off into space, Norman Osborn took over as the Spider-Man on Earth. Now he’d like to take all that knowledge he learned while under the mask — no, not his Spider-Man mask; his Green Goblin mask — and pass it on to the next generation of Spider-heroes.

Amazing Spider-Man: Spider-Versity by Jordan Morris, Joe Kelly and Pere Perez will put Norman and Spider-Woman into the roles of teachers for Miles Morales, Spider-Gwen, Spider-Boy, Spider-Girl, Arana and Silk. And the lesson plan includes how to fight the Green Goblin.

“Spider-Versity spins directly out of the events of Amazing Spider-Man,” Kelly said. “Norman has a definitive threat in mind that he’s trying to protect the young Spiders against. One he knows intimately. But even for a master planner like Norman, things may perhaps go awry, and the kids will face some unexpected threats. Nothing like learning on the job!”

Slugfest | The Avengers celebrate a milestone in Marvel’s January solicitations

January’s a big month for Marvel with a lot of new titles debuting, including a new Iron Man title, Dungeons of Doom, a Knull miniseries and the entire Shadows of Tomorrow line, among many othesr, as you’ll see below.

But before getting into more of that new stuff, let’s look at a big milestone issue that lands in January — Avengers #34, or #800 with legacy numbering. The oversized milestone issue features Earth’s Mightiest Heroes dealing with the long-simmering clash between Kang and Myrddin, which writer Jed MacKay introduced when he took over the title and finally erupts into cosmic chaos.

Stan Lee and John Romita’s ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ newspaper strips return from Clover Press

The campaign is now live on Kickstarter.

Clover Press and The Library of American Comics are teaming up to bring The Amazing Spider-Man Classic Newspaper Comics back into print—this time in an affordable softcover format—and they’re turning to Kickstarter to make it happen.

“The Library of American Comics remastered and collected the strip in a series of hardcover collections—but so many of them are out of print, making the collection highly sought after and almost impossible for your average comics lover to get their hands on,” said Clover Publisher Hank Kanalz. ”Now, Clover Press and The Library of American Comics are bringing the collections back to print in an affordable softcover format! We’re collecting the strip strictly by year, reprinting each installment from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31. We can’t wait to help get these iconic comic strips into the hands of Spidey lovers everywhere!”

The campaign’s first offering will collect the strip from 1977–1980 across four softcover volumes, each measuring 11″ x 8.5″ in a horizontal format, housed in a protective slipcase designed for easy shelving. Backers can pick up all four volumes as a bundle, along with campaign-exclusive extras including a puzzle, stickers, lithographs and more. And today we have your first look at the sticker sheets:
