Tim Daniel, DB Andry + Alex Sanchez dive into ‘Crush Depth’ next March

The Mad Cave Studios series begins in March.

Morning Star co-creators Tim Daniel and David ‘DB’ Andry will explore the depths of horror in the post-apocalyptic undersea thriller Crush Depth, teaming with artist Alex Sanchez, colorist Kurt Michael Russell and letterer Justin Birch.

Mad Cave will publish the first issue of the horror/action series next March. The story follows the Chief Science Officer on a submarine that’s afraid to surface in a world devastated by climate change — but when something alien arrives on the sub, she may not have a choice.

“The DNA of Crush Depth is laced with inspiration from John Carpenter’s The Thing to Jeff Vandermeer’s Annihilation and several other touchstones such as The Abyss, Underwater and Neville Shute’s novel On The Beach,” said Tim Daniel. “It’s evocative of that time but ultimately will prove to be as cathartic as the moment when we collectively threw open our doors once again and ventured out of our homes to find the world had changed some and maybe we had too.”

The death of the last unicorn sends the world into darkness in Rich Douek + Gavin Smith’s ‘Heartpiercer’

Dark Horse Comics will publish the miniseries beginning in May.

Drive Like Hell writer Rich Douek will team with artists Gavin Smith and Nicholas Burgdorf on Heartpiercer, a new miniseries coming from Dark Horse Comics later this year. They’ll be joined by letterer Justin Birch.

In the story, a monster hunter named Atala is tricked into killing the last unicorn, plunging the world into darkness.

“Fantasy is the first genre I fell in love with as a reader,” Douek said. “And my earliest work in comics is deeply rooted in it. In a lot of ways, Heartpiercer is a return to my roots as a writer; an epic, dark fantasy about love, vengeance and coming to terms with the sins of your past. I can’t wait for readers to see the world we’ve built.”

Douek, Cormack + Birch reunite for ‘Breath of Shadows’

The horror miniseries about a 1960s rock star kicks off in February.

Writer Rich Douek, artist Alex Cormack and letterer Justin Birch return to IDW next year for Breath of Shadows, another horror miniseries following their work on Road of Bones and Sea of Sorrows. This one will fall under the IDW Originals banner that’s being shepherded by editor Mark Doyle.

Breath of Shadows is the story of a 1960s rock star/heroin addict who goes looking for an easy solution to his addiction in the South American jungle, only to find “primal horrors that put his own inner demons to shame.”

“With Breath of Shadows, Alex and I wanted to continue exploring the dark themes we began with in Road of Bones and Sea of Sorrows,” Douek said. “I absolutely love working with Alex—Breath of Shadows is the latest example of how our creative partnership has evolved over the years into something awesome, and I hope to be working with him for a long, long time.”

Cesare + Stoll present a ‘shopping spree from Hell’ in ‘Dead Mall’

The first issue of the four-issue miniseries arrives in October.

Horror novelist Adam Cesare, whose books include Clown in a Cornfield and Summer Job, will work with artist David Stoll (Pantomime) and letterer Justin Birch on Dead Mall, a new miniseries coming from Dark Horse Comics later this year.

The story takes place in — and is narrated by — the Penn Mills Galleria, a former mall that’s about to be demolished when a group of kids decide to visit it one last time — only to find it isn’t so empty.

“The first comics I remember buying as a kid, during my first trips to the comic shop with my dad, were issues of Dark Horse Presents. It’s surreal, 30ish years later, to be talking about Dead Mall,” Cesare said. “I wanted to tell a story that readers of my books would enjoy, but also something that couldn’t be done–or couldn’t be done *best*–in prose. A supernatural, monster-filled, body-horror-tinged combination of Chopping Mall and The Ruins, where the mall itself is narrating the story? That sounded like a lot! Something that could only be achieved in the collaborative medium of comics. And what a collaborator to have in David Stoll, whose art is immaculate and storytelling sense is unimpeachable. Then there’s Justin Birch and the rest of the team at Dark Horse, a dream to be working with them. We’re just so excited for readers to enter Penn Mills Galleria.”
