NYCC | Rick Veitch + Michael Zulli’s unpublished ‘Swamp Thing’ story will finally come to print

‘Swamp Thing 1989’ will be published as a four-issue Black Label series next year.

One of comics’ most infamous “lost” stories is finally coming to print. At New York Comic Con during their Vertigo panel, DC announced that Rick Veitch and Michael Zulli’s unpublished Swamp Thing #88 from 1989 will finally be published, the first issue of a four-issue miniseries that’ll wrap up the story Veitch originally intended to tell.

Swamp Thing 1989 will kick off in April of next year as a Black Label title, with the first issue containing the completed but never published issue. It’ll be followed by three new issues, written by Veitch with art by Tom Mandrake and Trish Mulvihill. Zulli, unfortunately, passed away last year.

In Memory: Comic creators we lost in 2024

As we move into 2025, we pay respect to some of the comics creators we lost last year.

As we move into the new year, we take a moment to remember the comic writers, artists and editors we lost in 2024.

José María Del Bó, known professionally as José Delbo, passed away at the age of 90 in February. The Argentine comics artist was known for his work on Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen, World’s Finest, Batman Family and Wonder Woman in the 1960s and 1970s, as well as Transformers, ThunderCats, Captain Planet and the Planeteers and NFL SuperPro at Marvel.

Rest in peace, Michael Zulli

The artist of ‘Sandman,’ ‘The Last Temptation’ and ‘Puma Blues’ has passed away at the age of 71.

Michael Zulli, the creator of Puma Blues and artist on Sandman, Alice Cooper: The Last Temptation and many more beautifully drawn comics, has passed away at the age of 71. The news was shared by artist and publisher Stephen Bissette, who published Zulli’s work in several issues of Bissette’s Taboo in the late 1980s/early 1990s.

“Beloved longtime friend, irreplaceable Taboo ally and co-conspirator, and among the greatest animal artists who ever worked in the comics medium anywhere in the world—miss you, Michael Zulli, proud to have walked a few beats in this crazy creative path with you,” Stephen Bissette wrote on Facebook.

Sunday with ‘Sandman’ | Looking back at the earliest issues of the beloved series

Shane Bailey cracks open ‘Sandman: The Deluxe Edition V1,’ journeying back to the late 1980s for a look at the influential series.

Last week I decided to start a massive reread of the Neil Gaiman-written Sandman family of books, starting with the Deluxe Edition v1, and honestly I forgot how great these books are. Over the years I’ve come to take them for granted, but they are really top of the class in terms of subject and craft.

Reading these books again I see how heavily it leans into horror, which I had forgotten. It has that creeping horror feel down, the kind that starts the hairs on the back of your neck to signal that something isn’t quite right, rather than in-your-face shock horror.
