Fund Me Tuesday | ‘Foulbrood’ by Christopher Sebela and Claire Roe

Help fund a comic about crime and beekeeping.

If you’re looking to back a Kickstarter project with (no, don’t say it) literal buzz (ugh, I said it), then check out Foulbrood, a new comic by Christopher Sebela (.Self, Crowded, Dead Dudes) and Claire Roe (Darkhold: Wasp, Bury the Lede).

The duo previously worked together on the queer reincarnation thriller We(l)come Back, and this time around they’re telling a crime story set in the world of beekeeping — if my cheesy lede didn’t spell that out for you.

Their campaign is to fund the first two issues of a six-issue series. They’re looking for $15,000 to bring them to print, and you’ve got until Dec. 11 to help them avoid the sting that comes with not getting funded.

(Sorry, I’ll stop now, I promise).

Foulbrood #1 cover

Here’s the description from the Kickstarter page:

Beekeeping is a cutthroat industry.  When low-rent thief DC Cole makes off with Jolene Witherspoon’s entire supply of beehives, she’ll have to scour the farms, apiaries and secret networks of rural California to track him and her bees down. With nothing to go on and a mean temper mixed with desperation, Jolene’s crusade will push a rural crime family and its psychopathic soldiers into action to protect their interests and put a pair of bored Agricultural Task Force cops up against something way scarier than stolen tractor parts. These stories will all intersect in violent, amusing and bloody ways in a world where everyone is trying to get rich, get out or get their bees back.

Sebela and Roe are joined by colorist Hank Jones, letterer Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou and editor Jasmine Walls for the project, and according to the project page, these first two issues are already completed.

As far as rewards go, a $14 pledge will get you digital copies of the first two issues, while $20 will get you print copies. Other tiers offer variant covers. digital commissions, a script consultation for aspiring writers and a “Zola video” — a video of Sebela’s dog doing various dog things.
