Grab your sunscreen and prepare for a ‘Toxic Summer’

Derek Charm unleashes toxic waste and subhuman monstrosities on an unsuspecting beach town.

Oni Press and Derek Charm will present a “nightmare beach party” in May with the launch of Toxic Summer, a three-issue, oversized miniseries.

Charm, whose work has appeared in Howard the Duck, Jughead, The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, Star Wars Adventures and many more, will write and draw the series about two friends whose jobs as lifeguards go horribly wrong.

“Inspired by classic beach movies, gross out teen horror, Mad Magazine, and my own insane friendships, this is a story that has been cooking for some time,” Charm said. “I couldn’t ask for a better home for it than Oni Press, or better collaborators than [editor] Bess Pallares and [letterer] Frank Cvetkovic.”

Each 48-page issue will arrive bi-monthly:

Best friends Ben and Leo had the perfect summer planned after high school graduation. As lifeguards in the idyllic beach town of Port Dorian, they were planning for three months of hot guys, late-night bonfires, and no regrets . . . until a toxic spill of unknown properties on the beach transformed their dream summer into a waking nightmare. Now Port Dorian is flooded with panicked tourists, a local researcher is paralyzed while investigating the spill, and a horrifying pack of subhuman monstrosities is snatching beachgoers in the night.

Here’s a preview of issue #1:

And of course the first issue’s variant covers, by Scott Forbes, Skylar Patridge and a virgin version of Charm’s main cover, plus a “Radioactive Waste Fifth Ink” sketch variant manufactured in “retina-scorching” green:

The three-issue Toxic Summer miniseries begins May 1.
