Can’t Wait for Wednesday | Celebrating 10 years of Marvel’s Star Wars revival

See what comics are expected to arrive at your local comic shop this week.

Welcome to Can’t Wait for Wednesday, your guide to what comics are arriving in comic book stores, bookstores and on digital. It’s a fifth week this week, as January has five Wednesdays in it, meaning there are less regular titles and more specials and one-shots.

I’ve pulled out some of the other highlights for this week below, but for the complete list of everything you might find at your local comic shop and on digital this week, you’ll want to check out one or more of the following:

As a reminder, things can change and what you find on the above lists may differ from what’s actually arriving in your local shop. With Diamond going through bankruptcy proceedings, things could be more tumultuous with deliveries and arrival dates, especially for small press books. So check with your retailer to see what’s arriving at their shop.

Star Wars: A New Legacy (Marvel, $6.99): It’s been 10 years since the Star Wars license returned to Marvel, and to celebrate, they’re releasing this one-shot. It features stories by Kieron Gillen, Jason Aaron and Charles Soule, three writers who have contributed to the line since its relaunch, along with recent Star Wars artists Ramon Rosanas, Leonard Kirk and Salva Espin. Their stories will feature characters who made their debut in the comics, including Doctor Aphra, Sana Starros, Scar Squadron, Krrsantan the Wookiee bounty hunter and more.

Book of Cutter #1 (BOOM! Studios, $9.99): Speaking of milestones, this extra-sized book marks five years of James Tynion IV’s Slaughterverse and unveils one of its darkest chapters yet, as Maxine Slaughter journeys to Europe to seek out House Cutter and their mysterious ways. This one-shot features art by Werther Dell’Edera.

DC Power: Rise of the Power Company (DC, $5.99): DC’s annual Black History Month special returns with a revival of The Power Company, a team from the early aughts created by Kurt Busiek and Tom Grummett. This new version of the team has a different line-up, assembled by Josiah Powers to provide a “solution to the problem of growing anti-meta sentiment.” The main story is by Brandon Thomas with art by Charles Stewart III, Anthony Fowler Jr., and Ulises Arreola, with additional stories filling out the anthology by John Jennings, Caanan White, Vita Ayala and more.

Storm: Lifedream (Marvel, $4.99): Marvel once again dedicates their annual Black History Month special to a specific character, Storm, with stories by Angélique Roché, John Jennings, Curtis Baxter, Brittney Morris, Karen S. Darboe, Edwin Galmon and more.

SilverHawks #1 (Dynamite, $4.99): Dynamite follows their highly successful launch of the ThunderCats with the debut of a sister title — SilverHawks. Ed Brisson and George Kambadais will bring the space-soaring team, who also had their own cartoon back in the 1980s, into comics.

Ripperland #1 (Dark Horse, $4.99): Steve Orlando, John Harris Dunning and Alessandro Oliveri bring the most notorious murderer from England’s past to its future, where it has been turned into a theme park.

DC’s Lex and the City (DC, $9.99): Just in time for Valentine’s Day, DC offers up an anthology of love with stories by Brendan Hay, Sina Grace, Dave Wielgosz, Charles Skaggs, Callie C. Miller, Maggie Tokuda-Hall and more.

The Seasons #1 (Image Comics, $3.99): Rick Remender, Paul Azaceta and Matheus Lopes team up for a new horror series featuring the Season Sisters — four orphans named for the seasons who are targeted by sinister forces.

Power Lords #1 (Oni Press, $4.99): Dennis Culver, Mathew Hudson and V Ken Marion bring the 1980s toys back to comics in a new series that ties into Oni’s bigger Nacelleverse.

Kill Train #1 (Mad Cave Studios, $4.99): In this dystopian story, an overpopulated New York resorts to killing people on random subway trains to weed down its population. Olivia Cuartero-Briggs and Martina Niosi show us what happens when one mom refuses to go down without a fight.

Superman: Lex Luthor Special (DC, $3.99): Writer Joshua Williamson, with artists Eddy Barrows and Eber Ferreira, present Superman with an impossible decision — restore Lex Luthor’s memories so he can help the Justice League solve a mystery, or leave Lex in peace.

Pantomime (Maverick, $14.99): Christopher Sebela and David Stoll’s comic about deaf teens who turn to a life of crime returns — with some content modifications — as a YA graphic novel.
