Can’t Wait for Wednesday | 50 years of ‘Giant Size X-Men’

Plus: Mr. Terrific’s origin retold! Donald Duck becomes Iron Man! And Detective Kaiju is on the case!

Happy Memorial Day and welcome to Can’t Wait for Wednesday, your guide to what comics are arriving in comic book stores, bookstores and on digital.

I’ve pulled out some of the highlights for this week below, but for the complete list of everything you might find at your local comic shop and on digital this week, you’ll want to check out one or more of the following:

Giant-Size X-Men (Marvel, $4.99): It’s the 50th anniversary of Giant-Size X-Men #1, which brought us Storm, Nightcrawler, Colossus and more, so Marvel’s pulling out the stops with a whole series of Giant-Size specials that look back at pivotal X-Men stories like Age of Apocalypse and the Dark Phoenix saga, only with a twist — the event sees Ms. Marvel pulled into the distant past by an unstable and unleashed Legion, and as they fight through time they risk warping history and reality. 

In this first one, drawn from Giant-Size X-Men #1, Kamala ends up on Krakoa circa the birth of the new X-Men in a story by Collin Kelly, Jackson Lanzing, Adam Kubert and more. It also includes a back-up story by Al Ewing and Sara Pichelli.

Mr. Terrific: Year One #1 (DC, $3.99): Journalist Al Letson, host of the radio show and podcast Reveal, returns to comics alongside artist Valentine de Landro for this new miniseries retelling Mr. Terrific’s tragic origin.

Dark Honor #1 (Image Comics, $3.99): Ethan Sacks, K.S. Bruce, Brian DeCubellis and Fico Ossio tell the story of the Hundred, the strong arm of the New York underworld, as they face a a rival trying to take power during the outbreak of COVID-19.

What If? … Donald Duck Became Iron Man? (Marvel, $4.99): In another mashup from Marvel and Disney, Steve Behling and Donald Soffritti show us what might have happened if Donald Duck had actually become Iron Man instead of Tony Stark.

The Goddamn Tragedy (Oni Press, $6.99): This one-shot by Chris Condon and Shawn Kuruneru tells the story of Ellen and her family, who head out into the Old West to find a new life — but face danger when her father decides to split off from their wagon train.

Detective Kaiju #1 (Massive, $4.99): This spinoff from Quested by Michael Calero and Kit Wallis sends the world’s largest detective on a case to solve a mystery cenetred on a murdered friend.

The Pale Knight #1 (Mad Cave Studios, $4.99): Peter Milligan and Val Rodrigues present the story of the Pale Knight, who returns from war and makes a deal with death to save his son from the plague.

Venom: Original Sin #1 (Marvel, $6.99): Steve Orlando, Scott Koblish and Matt Horak send the King in Black, aka Eddie Brock, back in time to fix a mistake form his past. Unfortunately, “one small change can make ripples that can destroy a world” …

Mommy Blog (Image Comics, $5.99): Marguerite Bennett and Eleonora Carlini helm this black comedy about a mommy blogger attempting to keep her neighborhood safe from some sort of predator that’s taking the children — all while competition for “Mommy of the Year.”

Family Force V (Skybound, $16.99): Matt Braly and Ainsworth Lin tell the story of Maise, a teenager trying to find her own path while living up to her family’s legacy of keeping the world safe from alien kaiju.

Done With Demons (Silver Sprocket, $12.99): The road to Hell is said to be paved with good intentions, but the road out of Hell? Apparently it runs through a little old lady’s oven. This new graphic novel by Dora Grents is about the mayor of Hell, who gets evicted from Hell and ends up living with a little old lady and her dog. Together they bake biscuits and make prank calls as the mayor has to decide whether he wnats to try and reclaim his throne, or stay on Earth with his new friends.
