Can’t Wait for Wednesday | Get a crash course on the DCU in ‘New History of the DC Universe’

Plus: Lazarus returns! Ultramega finale! And Shaky Kane lights a ‘Magick Lantern’!

Welcome to Can’t Wait for Wednesday, your guide to what comics are arriving in comic book stores, bookstores and on digital this week.

I’ve pulled out some of the highlights for this week below, but for the complete list of everything you might find at your local comic shop and on digital this week, you’ll want to check out one or more of the following:

As a reminder, things can change and what you find on the above lists may differ from what’s actually arriving in your local shop. So check with your retailer to see what’s arriving at their shop this week.

New History of the DC Universe #1 (DC, $5.99): I was a big fan of the History of the DC Universe by Marv Wolfman and George Perez, which came out after Crisis on Infinite Earths back in the day and laid out everything you needed to know about DC’s past, present and future. That history has gotten several updates since then, so it makes sense that they’ve enlisted Mark Waid to write a new volume.

Different artists will draw each 48-page issue, which will focus on different eras. This first one features artwork by Jerry Ordway and Todd Nauck, who get to sptolight the Justice Society and the Golden Age of Heroes.

Giant Size Age of Apocalypse (Marvel, $4.99): Colin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing team with CF Villa for the next “giant size” X-Men one-shot, which features Ms. Marvel and Legion jumping back in time to various X-Men events. This one takes them to the 1990s event series Age of Apocalypse, and will feature a back-up story by one of that event’s original writers, Jeph Loeb, with artist Simone Di Meo.

Lazarus: Fallen #1 (Image Comics, $3.99): Greg Rucka and Michael Lark, two names I don’t see enough in upcoming comic solicitations, are back with the final Lazarus miniseries, as Forever Carlyle decides to burn it all down.

Tramps of the Apocalypse #1 (Dark Horse, $4.99): Alice Darrow writes and draws this three-issue series about three women who have escaped slavery in an apocalyptic wasteland ruled by men, and spend their days unleashing their “unparalleled bloodlust and an unquenchable thirst for violence” on Quest Ragnor, King of Males and his forces.

Don’t Forget Your Briefcase #1 (Mad Cave Studios, $4.99): The briefcase in question is the one that follows the U.S. president around, containing the nuclear codes, and what happens when it falls into the hands of a 10-year-old. It’s by Eliot Rahal and Phillip Sevy.

News from the Fallout (Image Comics, $3.99): Chris Condon and Jeffrey Alan Love present the science fiction/horror story of a nuclear bomb test gone wrong and the only survivor, Private Otis Fallows, who attempts to find safety from what’s been unleashed by it.

Biker Mice From Mars #1 (Oni Press, $5.99): The 1990s animated series made its triumphant return to comics last year as part of the Nacelleverse line-up at Oni Press, and now the Biker Mice From Mars jump out into their own ongoing series, courtesy of Melissa Flores, Matt Hotson, Daniel Gete and E.J. Su.

Magick Lantern #1 (Floating World Comics, $4.99): This is one of those titles I’m not sure I could do justice in my write-up, so I’ll just share the solicitation text: LIKE A SHOTGUN BLAST TO THE 3RD EYE! Tech Billionaire Elon Gates thought he could play God. Only God wasn’t playing along! Join underground breakout talent@Jinx and Pop Art shaman Shaky Kane as they charge up the Cybertruck and head out into The Chaos Dimension to bring you this all-new book-length tale, cryptically entitled I AM THE FLY! It’s by Jinx and Shaky Kane, and it should be a hoot.

VR Troopers #1 (BOOM!, $4.99): VR Troopers, the Power Rangers’ lesser known cousins who also had a TV show in the 1990s, return to comics. It spins out of recent issues of BOOM!’s Power Rangers Prime series, and it’s by Mairghread Scott and Sebastian Piriz.

Justice League Unlimited #8 (DC, $3.99): The “We Are Yesterday” crossover between JLU and World’s Finest comes to a close, as time goes crazy for the Justice League, courtesy of Mark Waid and Travis Moore.

Ultramega #9 (Image Comics, $7.99): James Harren’s epic story about epic giant monsters comes to a “ferocious finish” in its final issue this week.

Clementine Book 3 (Image Comics, $14.99): Tillie Walden wraps up her trilogy og graphic novels featuring Clementine, the main character from the Telltale Walking Dead video games. This volume finds Clementine under the guidance of a new mentor called The Gardener, and based on the cover it doesn’t look like he’s growing plants.

The Wrestler (Fantagraphics, $22.99): Fantagraphics has released multiple art books by John Kenn Mortensen featuring his nightmarish illustrations, and now he turns his pen to his first graphic novel about one of my favorite subjects, wrestling. It features The Sledgehammer, a freestyle wrestler who goes “to the limits of reality, to show that he’s motivated by far more than hubris—it’s also love.”
