Robert Kirkman + Dan Mora take over ‘Transformers’ with #25

A new era for the Energon Universe title begins in October with an oversized issue.

Robert Kirkman, the founder of Skybound who briefly sat in the writer’s room for the Transformer films, is getting his chance to chronicle the adventures of the Autobots and Decepticons. After ushering in the Energon Universe era with Void Rivals, Kirkman and Superman artist Dan Mora will take over the ongoing Transformers title with issue #25 following Daniel Warren Johnson and Jorge Corona’s epic run.

Kirkman and Mora will join colorist Mike Spicer and letterer Rus Wooton in October with an oversized issue that celebrates the series’ second anniversary. The issue will also feature a second story written by Kirkman and drawn by Corona.

“Holy smokes, I’m writing a Transformers comic!” said Kirkman. “I’ve been so invested in this series since the beginning. I’ve marveled at what Daniel Warren Johnson and Jorge Corona have brought to some of my all-time favorite characters. When Daniel’s run came to an end, I could stand on the sidelines no more! I just had to get in the ring! It’s a tremendous honor to be a small part of the legacy of these amazing characters. This world has been a huge part of my life for as long as I can remember. I can’t wait for everyone to see what the legendary Dan Mora and I are cooking up!”

Here’s a look at issue #25’s main cover by David Nakayama:

Kirkman and Mora “roll out” a new storyline in the ongoing war between the Autobots and Decepticons:

The Energon Universe will never be the same as the Autobots and Decepticons begin the most surprising new chapter in their war on Earth.

Optimus Prime and the remaining Autobots must join forces with unlikely allies in order to protect their adopted planet. But Prime’s next challenge lies closer to home than he ever imagined. And what is the fate of the Decepticons?

The duo have big shoes to fill after the very popular run by Johnson, who was joined by Corona with issue #7. The comic took home the “Best Continuing Series” at the Eisner Awards last year, while Johnson was named “Best Writer/Artist” for his work on the title. It was an impressive showing, especially considering that the Eisners don’t often recognize licensed comics like that.

Mora is currently the artist for DC’s Superman and Justice League Unlimited, and there’s no indication yet that he’ll be leaving either of them. Here’s a look at some of his interior work on the title:

“I’ve been a huge Transformers fan ever since I can remember, so it’s been a real thrill to come aboard the series with the equally thrilling Robert Kirkman,” said Mora. “I’ve also been a huge fan of Daniel Warren Johnson and Jorge Corona, and what they’ve done on this title has literally been out of this world. Drawing my favorite Autobots and Decepticons brings me back to all of the fun I had playing with them as a kid, so I hope to add my own spark to their legacy and can’t wait for fans to see what Robert and I have been toying with for the Energon Universe next!”

Johnson bridges the gap between his run and this new era with a variant cover issue #25, with Kael Ngu and Jae Lee also providing covers:

Transformers #25 will arrive Oct. 8.
