NYCC | Dynamite brings ‘Thundarr the Barbarian’ to comics for the first time

The new series by Jason Aaron and Kewber Baal begins next year.

Dynamite Entertainment is teaming with Warner Bros. and writer Jason Aaron for the first-ever Thundarr the Barbarian comic book series, more than 40 years after the cult-favorite cartoon’s original run. The new series will launch in January with interior art by Kewber Baal.

The original Thundarr the Barbarian aired for two seasons in the early 1980s, mixing post-apocalyptic adventure, fantasy and science fiction elements. The show was the creation of Steve Gerber of Howard the Duck and Man-Thing fame, with production design contributions from The King, Jack Kirby, and the legendary Alex Toth, among others — a group of creators that has long made fans wonder why Thundarr never made the leap to comics.

(It almost did, once upon a time).

That gap is finally being filled by Aaron, known for acclaimed runs on Thor, Conan the Barbarian, and Star Wars. In Dynamite’s announcement, Aaron said:

“Thundarr the Barbarian isn’t simply my all-time favorite Saturday morning cartoon. It’s a fundamental component of my DNA as a writer… In a career full of dream jobs, this one will most assuredly go down as one of the dreamiest.”

NYCC | Jeff Lemire + Dustin Nguyen reunite for ‘Crowbound’

The dark new series will land in March.

Fans of Descender, Ascender, and Little Monsters have something new to get excited about. Jeff Lemire and Dustin Nguyen are teaming up once again for Crowbound, an ongoing series launching from Image Comics in March. The announcement dropped last night at New York Comic Con during the Lunar Distribution retailer event.

Crowbound has been a project Dustin and I have been developing for several years, and we are incredibly excited to finally unleash it,” Lemire said. “This is our next major collaboration, something huge in scope like Descender was, but this story will also break new creative territory for us.”

Set in a post-apocalyptic world, Crowbound follows Rose, a mother on a desperate quest to rescue her daughter Ava after she is taken by the sinister Factory Men. Along the way, Rose must confront eerie, otherworldly forces, navigate a nightmarish lowland filled with strange creatures, and challenge forgotten gods in a sprawling dark fantasy adventure that blends Southern Gothic dread with Neo-Western grit.

Man of Action will bring their creation ‘Ben 10’ back to comics

The new series will launch at Dynamite Entertainment next February.

For the first time, the original creators of Ben 10 are bringing the action-packed adventures of the hero to comics, kicking off an ongoing series this February from Dynamite Entertainment in another partnership Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products.

The creative force behind the franchise—Joe Casey, Joe Kelly, Duncan Rouleau and Steven T. Seagle, collectively known as Man of Action Entertainment—are well known in the comics world AND for creating the Ben 10 animated series, but this is the first time they’ll personally craft Ben Tennyson’s escapades on the comics page.

Ben 10 is obviously very close to our hearts, and has been for the last 20 years,” Casey said. “So we’re psyched to finally present a vision of Ben and his mythology in the manner and format that we’ve always wanted to see. This is basically a straight-up superhero comic that’s going to compete with every major series out there. This is ‘Ultimate’ or ‘Absolute’ Ben 10. We guarantee, this is the best that Ben 10 has ever been.”
