Skybound adds M.A.S.K. to the Energon Universe with new series by Dan Watters and Pye Parr

The classic 1985 Hasbro franchise joins Transformers, G.I. Joe and Void Rivals in Skybound’s shared universe, with the debut issue arriving in June.

Skybound, Image Comics and Hasbro announced today that M.A.S.K., the classic spy-fi franchise that sprung from its 1985 animated series and toy line, is joining Skybound’s Energon Universe.

The ongoing M.A.S.K. series will be written by Batman: Dark Patterns writer Dan Watters and illustrated by Pye Parr of Petrol Head fame. They’ll be joined by colorist Pierluigi Casolino and letterer Rus Wooton when the first issue arrives in June.

The series follows Matt Trakker and his network of civilian specialists — equipped with advanced masks and transforming vehicles — as they battle Miles Mayhem and the criminal organization V.E.N.O.M., who are scouring the globe for weapons of alien origin and threatening to sell out the entire human race.

“Illusion is the ultimate weapon–but also sometimes weapons are the ultimate weapon,” Watters said. “M.A.S.K. is a book about ordinary people taking it into their own hands to face down the awesome weaponry of the Energon Universe–and a high octane, nonstop thrill ride to boot. I couldn’t be prouder to be bringing you this story alongside Pye this summer. Welcome to the M.A.S.K. network. Matt Trakker needs you to save the world.”

The series joins the Energon Universe lineup that already includes Transformers, G.I. Joe and Void Rivals, and their shared connected continuity. Like Transformers and G.I. Joe, M.A.S.K. was published by IDW before the license shifted to Skybound.

Parr, who grew up with the franchise, is not restrained in his enthusiasm for drawing the title. “80s sports cars! Jets! Lasers! Robots! M.A.S.K. has everything that I love to read, watch, and draw, and my inner 12-year-old fought to the surface and made me scream loudly in the meeting when I was offered this gig,” he said.

Readers can get their first look at the series in the Energon Universe Special 2026 Free Comic Book Day issue on May 2, which will feature an exclusive preview alongside new stories from Transformers, G.I. Joe and Void Rivals.

Here’s a look at some of the interior pages from the FCBD issue:

M.A.S.K. #1 features a main cover by Parr alongside a very extensive lineup of variant covers. Those include open-to-order covers by J. Scott Campbell and Sabine Rich, Cedric Poulat and Mark Spears; Energon Universe third anniversary connecting covers by Tom Reilly and Adriano Lucas; incentive variants by Kael Ngu, E.J. Su, Jonboy Meyers, Joshua Cassara and Romulo Fajardo Jr., and Daniel Warren Johnson and Mike Spicer; foil covers by Parr and Campbell; die-cut foil mask covers by Parr, Luke Preece and Andres Juarez; and blank sketch covers for both M.A.S.K. and V.E.N.O.M. A blind bag program will also offer surprise variants to be revealed at launch.

That’s a lot of covers … M.A.S.K. #1 arrives in stores June 3.
