Maniac Harry returns to burn down the Bronx in December

Elliott Kalan and Andrea Mutti bring back the unstoppable killing machine in ‘Maniac of New York: The Bronx is Burning.’

Elliott Kalan and Andrea Mutti’s Maniac Harry tore through a New York subway train in the pages of his first miniseries, and now he’s back to wreck havoc on the Bronx.

The seemingly unkillable slasher-killer inspired by Friday the 13th‘s Jason will return in Maniac of New York: The Bronx is Burning in December, where Kalan and Mutti team up with letterer Taylor Esposito to tell the next chapter in their story. While the first arc introduced the killer and the mayor’s aide who fought to bring him down, this one will show more of the impact he’s had on New York as a whole.

“The new arc, ‘The Bronx Is Burning,’ will give us more glimpses of how Maniac Harry has really insinuated himself into the fabric of New York life: copycat criminals, school Maniac drills, rap lyrics …” Kalan said. “We’ll also be following the Maniac into parts of the city we haven’t seen before, culminating in a huge scene at a public event that I’ve been wanting to include ever since the first series and which I can’t wait to see Andrea draw.”

Sonic suffers from ‘Imposter Syndrome’ in November

Ian Flynn and Thomas Rothlisberger team up for a new miniseries that leads into Sonic’s 50th issue from IDW.

IDW has announced a new Sonic the Hedgehog spin-off miniseries that will pit the blue speedster against doppelgangers, titled appropriately Sonic The Hedgehog: Imposter Syndrome.

Ian Flynn, who has written Sonic since 2006 and across two publishers, will work with artist Thomas Rothlisberger on the miniseries. It’ll feature Dr. Starline, the villain introduced three years ago, and will help build toward the upcoming 50th issue of IDW’s ongoing Sonic series. It’ll also introduce two new characters: Surge and Kit.

“I’m especially excited about this story since it’s building upon the core fundamentals that led to Dr. Starline’s creation as a character,” Flynn said. “Hardcore fans will pick up on the inspirations from across Sonic‘s gaming history immediately. New fans will get to experience some wild new villains in a story that accelerates us to the monumental Sonic the Hedgehog #50. It’s a win-win for everybody!”

Marvel announces eight new ‘tentpole’ titles for this coming winter

Daredevil, Fantastic Four, She-Hulk and more have new projects lined up at the House of Ideas.

Marvel revealed today eight new titles for the coming winter that they’re referring to as “tentpole” titles — or titles that “will shape the future of the Marvel Universe in the months to come.”

Marvel announced earlier this month plans to reveal several new projects today in celebration of their birthday — so, Happy Birthday, Marvel!

Happy Birthday to the Sub-Mariner, the original Human Torch, and the start of the whole dang Marvel Universe!

Titan to publish a ‘Cowboy Bebop’ comic that ties into the Netflix series

Dan Watters and Lamar Mathurin will bring the infamous space cowboys to comics in December.

Netflix is adapting the worldwide anime phenomenon Cowboy Bebop into a live-action series this November, and Titan Comics has announced they’re doing the tie-in comic — along with a prequel novel and an art book.

Cowboy Bebop: The Comic Series will be a four-issue miniseries by Home Sick Pilots writer Dan Watters and artist Lamar Mathurin. The first issue debuts in December, with a trade paperback collection following next May.

Crowdfunding continues to serve as a viable method for creators to fund their creative endeavors, as comic-related projects flourish on sites like Kickstarter and Patreon. The internet also allows creators to sell their creations direct to fans, through sites like Gumroad, Big Cartel and of course their own websites. If you’re looking to buy something from or support a creator directly, you’ve come to the right place. And that’s a good thing to do, now more than ever.

Iron Circus Comics launched their latest project, Cautionary Fables and Fairy Tales: North America, earlier this week, and they’ve already blown well past their $20,000 goal by almost $100,000. And they’ve still got 14 days to go! That’s all in a day’s work for the publisher, who are up to 30 successful campaigns, and, according to publisher Spike Trotman, they aren’t stopping anytime soon.

“I’ve grown an audience that’s interested in what I do and everything that I publish,” she told Forbes. “At this point my audience kind of knows my tastes and knows my inclinations and even if it doesn’t fit like a glove, it’s something they can get behind.”

‘Geiger 80-Page Giant’ will include a preview of Johns + Frank’s next comic

The oversized issue will also include contributions from Bryan Hitch, Jay Faerber, Peter J. Tomasi and more.

Geoff Johns and Gary Frank will release a Geiger 80-Page Giant through their publisher Image Comics in November, featuring a variety of creators playing with the characters and world they’ve created in the regular series. It will also include a preview of their next project, Junkyard Joe.

Creators contributing to the oversized issue include Bryan Hitch, Jay Faerber, Sterling Gates, Janet Harvey, Leon Hendrix III, Peter J. Tomasi, Pornsak Pichetshote, Staz Johnson, Joe Prado, Paul Pelletier, Sean Galloway, Peter Snejbjerg, Kelley Jones and Megan Levens.

“A really cool bonus to working on the original Geiger series was getting to see the interpretations of some of our favorite artists on the variant covers,” said Frank. “Now we get the thrill of seeing other artists AND writers bringing these characters to life in new and wonderful ways!”

75th annual NCS Reuben Awards nominees announced

Winners will be revealed in October.

The National Cartoonist Society has trickled out the nominees for this year’s Reuben Award and the accompanying NCS Divisional Awards over the last few months, as they prepare for the big awards ceremony in October.

The divisional awards include categories that cover comic books, webcomics, political cartoons and more. I’ve included the nominations that are relevant to the world of comics, but you can find the complete nominations lists here and here.

Image will publish John Leguizamo’s ‘PhenomX’

The comic, which was crowdfunded in 2019, will be drawn by artist Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez.

PhenomX, a superhero comic by Spawn actor John Leguizamo and artist Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez, will arrive in stores in November courtesy of Image Comics and Todd McFarlane, who will provide a variant cover for the first issue.

The all-Latino creative team for the project includes Miranda-Rodriguez—author of the comic series La Boriqueña—as well as cover art by Jim Muñiz, José Marzán, Jr. and Juan Fernández.

“In today’s world, it’s incredibly important to support Latin artists,” said Leguizamo. “There is a lack of Latin representation in Hollywood, and it’s important to showcase Latin superheroes.”

Williamson + Molina to pit Batman against the new villain Abyss in December

Williamson takes over the flagship Batman title following the departure of James Tynion IV.

Following the departure of James Tynion IV from Batman, Joshua Williamson has announced on Twitter that he’ll write the title beginning with issue #118, with Jorge Molina on art.

“As Batman leaves Gotham, I’m starting a new storyline called ‘Abyss’ drawn by the awesome Jorge Molina,” he said. “We’re honoring the plan that the other books in the bat-line are doing while telling a brand-new story for Bruce Wayne as Batman in the DCU.”

Nominees announced for the 2021 Ringo Awards

Winners are scheduled to be announced at the Baltimore Comic-Con in October.

The nominees for the 2021 Ringo Awards have been announced, marking the fifth year for the awards program named for artist Mike Wieringo, who passed away in 2007.

Nominees were chosen by fans, along with a panel of judges that included retailer and online host Amy Dallen, Teaching Graphic Novels author Dr. Katie Monnin, podcaster/broadcast journalist John Siuntres, cartoonist Steenz and artist Brain Stelfreeze.

The fifth annual awards presentation will take place at The Baltimore Comic-Con on Oct. 23.

Young reveals new artist, Substack plans for ‘I Hate Fairyland’

Brett Parson joins Young on the ongoing series from Image Comics, while Substack premium subscribers will receive short stories set in the ‘I Hate Fairyland’ universe.

I Hate Fairyland creator Skottie Young has detailed his future plans for the comic, which he wrote and drew from 2015 to 2018.

Those plans include a new artist, Brett Parson, for the ongoing series, plus a series of short stories by various artists that he plans to post for premium subscribers to his Substack mailing list.

“In 2015 I launched my first creator owned book at Image Comics called I Hate Fairyland,” Young wrote. “I was nervous that something as wacky and over the top as IHF wasn’t going to find a place with readers but man, was I wrong! Over the next few years, the book sold really well, I received tons of fan art, photos of tattoos and a wild amount of IHF cosplay. I was blown away!”
