DC cancels ‘The Red Hood’ just one day after the first issue’s debut

The cancellation follows comments the writer made about the death of inflammatory activist Charlie Kirk on social media.

Just a day after the mature readers title arrived in stores, DC has cancelled all future issues of The Red Hood by Gretchen Felker-Martin, Jeff Spokes and Becca Carey.

DC told retailers that they were cancelling orders for issues #2 and #3, which were already solicited, and they will credit retailers for all invoiced copies of Red Hood #1, “inclusive of copies that may have already been sold.” The first issue was still available on the digital comics platform Comixology when I checked earlier this morning, but it appears to be no longer available.

The publisher issued a statement on the cancellation:

“At DC Comics, we place the highest value on our creators and community and affirm the right to peaceful, individual expression of personal viewpoints. Posts or public comments that can be viewed as promoting hostility or violence are inconsistent with DC’s standards of conduct.”

DC will launch an ongoing ‘Red Hood’ title in September

Gretchen Felker-Martin, Jeff Spokes and Becca Carey give Jason Todd a new mission and a new city to protect.

Every Robin is somebody’s favorite Robin, and that includes Jason Todd. The former dead Robin will return to the spotlight in a new series written by Gretchen Felker-Martin, with art by Jeff Spokes and lettering by Becca Carey. Red Hood, billed as a “17+” series, will be set in New Angelique, which is described as a “New Orleans flavored backdrop.”

“Sweat, blood, and powder burns. Broken bones and mind control. A city rotted from the inside out,” said Felker-Martin. “Jason’s going through hell on the hunt for an enigmatic telepath, and he’s taking us with him. I’m thrilled to be helming this new run of Red Hood with Jeff Spokes.”

Although it’s aimed at a more mature audience than most of DC’s regular All In series, it is set in regular DC continuity.

Batman and Catwoman face a ‘Gotham War’ this fall

Dawn of DC continues in the fall with a crossover between Gotham’s most tumultuous couple.

DC Comics has announced a new crossover coming in the fall — Batman/Catwoman: The Gotham War, part of their Dawn of DC publishing initiative. The story will run through two one-shots, the regular Batman and Catwoman titles, and a miniseries that will focus on The Red Hood.

Chip Zdarsky and Tini Howard, writers of Batman and Catwoman, have been working toward this story since they each started on their respective title.

“From the moment Tini and I started working on these titles, we realized we had a huge opportunity to build toward something that would shake up the power structure of Gotham City,” Zdarsky said. “The Gotham War is just that: relationships explode, relationships are formed, and it all leads to massive changes! Being able to take these kinds of big swings together has been extremely exciting.”

‘Batman: Urban Legends’ anthology title launches in March

First issue will feature stories about Batman and his entourage by Chip Zdarsky, Eddy Barrows, Stephanie Phillips and more.

DC has announced a new, monthly anthology title focused on Batman and all his Gotham City friends.

The first six issues will include a story by Chip Zdarsky and Eddy Barrows, featuring a team-up between Batman and the Red Hood.

“… this has been a ton of fun to work on,” Zdarsky said in his email newsletter. “I’m not going to lie, growing up on the comics, TV shows and movies, it was like Batman raised me. Like he was a father to me and I was simply another one of his Robins, trained to fight in daddy’s war.”
