Mariko Tamaki, Jeff Smith, Elsa Charretier, ‘Monica’ + more win at the 2024 Ringo Awards

The winners were announced during a ceremony held at the Baltimore Comic-Con this weekend.

This year’s Ringo Awards winners were announced last night during a ceremony at the Baltimore Comic-Con.

This marks the eighth year for the awards program named for artist Mike Wieringo, the artist of Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, Tellos and more who died in 2007.

Besides the Ringo Awards themselves, other awards were given out during the ceremony, including three from the Hero Initiative. Marvel Executive Editor Tom Brevoort received The Dick Giordano Humanitarian of the Year Award, while artist Klaus Janson received the Hero Initiative Lifetime Achievement Award.

Artist Tom Raney received the first Brogan Fidelity Award. According to the Hero Initiative,”this new award honors creators who have demonstrated an exceptional commitment to the comic book medium and its fans, embodying the spirit of perseverance, passion and excellence, in the spirit of the late Dr. Kevin Brogan.”

 The Mike Wieringo Comic Book Industry Spirit Award went to the comic The Hunger and the Dusk, by G. Willow Wilson and Chris Wildgoose, and published by IDW. This award is selected every year by perennial jurors Todd Dezago, Craig Rousseau, Mark Waid and Matt Wieringo, Mike’s brother.

Nominees announced for the 2024 Ringo Awards

The awards will be presented during the Baltimore Comic-Con on Sept. 21.

The nominees for the 2024 Ringo Awards have been announced, marking the eighth year for the awards program named for the late Mike Wieringo, the artist of Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, Tellos and more who died in 2007.

Nominees were chosen by fans, along with a panel of judges, and the awards period included any materials published in 2023. The awards presentation will take place at The Baltimore Comic-Con on Sept. 21.

“Every year, the Ringo Awards jurors have the difficult task of ‘picking their favorite child’, so to speak,” said Marc Nathan, Baltimore Comic-Con promoter. “It is always a challenge to determine what makes the cut and what doesn’t, but as you can see from the final ballot, our jury’s hard work paid off and, with the inclusion of the public votes, we have an outstanding representation of some of comics’ best works from 2023. Creators should make their way to the voting site now and make sure your peers do the same!”

Kate Beaton, Ed Brubaker, Evan ‘Doc’ Shaner and more win at the 2023 Ringo Awards

The winners were announced during a ceremony held at the Baltimore Comic-Con this weekend.

The winners for the 2023 Ringo Awards were announced last night at the Baltimore Comic-Con. This marks the sixth year for the awards program named for artist Mike Wieringo, who passed away in 2007.

Nominees were selected earlier this year by an open nomination process and a jury that consisted of Diamond’s Troy-Jeffrey Allen, artist Richard Case, comics creator and instructor Amy Chu, writer Abby Denson and Valiant sales manager/former retailer John Petrie.

Besides the Ringo Awards themselves, a few other awards were given out during the ceremony, including two from the Hero Initiative. Chris Claremont received the Hero Initiative Lifetime Achievement Award, while Al Milgrom received the Dick Giordano Humanitarian Award.

The Mike Wieringo Comic Book Industry Spirit Award went to the comic World’s Finest by Mark Waid and Dan Mora, and published by DC. This award is selected every year by perennial jurors Todd Dezago, Craig Rousseau, Mark Waid and Matt Wieringo, Mike’s brother.

The Ringo’s fan award categories, which are selected by open voting, were also presented:

  • Fan Favorite Hero: Sam Young, Let’s Play
  • Fan Favorite Villain: Adam, The Guy Upstairs
  • Fan Favorite New Series: Nevermore
  • Fan Favorite New Talent: artist/colorist Ellie Wright
  • Fan Favorite Publisher: Dark Horse

Winners announced for the 2021 Ringo Awards

The winners were announced in a ceremony that was livestreamed from the Baltimore Comic-Con this weekend.

The winners for the 2021 Ringo Awards were announced last night at the Baltimore Comic-Con, marking the fifth year for the awards program named for artist Mike Wieringo, who passed away in 2007.

Nominees were chosen by fans, along with a panel of judges that included retailer and online host Amy Dallen, Teaching Graphic Novels author Dr. Katie Monnin, podcaster/broadcast journalist John Siuntres, cartoonist Steenz and artist Brain Stelfreeze.

In addition the Ringos, a few other awards were presented during last night’s ceremony:

  • Artist Gene Ha was presented the Hero Initiative’s Dick Giordano Humanitarian Award.
  • Marvel’s Joe Quesada received the Hero Initiative Lifetime Achievement Award.
  • The Mike Wieringo Spirit Award, which is voted on by the professional jury as well as three additional, perennial jurors: Matt Wieringo, Todd Dezago, and Mark Waid, went to Folklords by Matt Kindt and Matt Smith.

Let’s start off with a short fan comic that’s been making the rounds on social media. Two Superman fans named Scott Kurtz and Karl Kerschl — oh hey, I know those names — shared this eight-years-in-the-making comic featuring the Man of Steel.

“Eight years ago, I came home from seeing Man of Steel and wrote a 5 page Superman story,” Kurtz said on Twitter. “Karl Kerschl offered to draw it. Eight years later he finished it. I’m gobsmacked!”

Nominees were chosen by fans, along with a panel of judges that included retailer and online host Amy Dallen, Teaching Graphic Novels author Dr. Katie Monnin, podcaster/broadcast journalist John Siuntres, cartoonist Steenz and artist Brain Stelfreeze.

The fifth annual awards presentation will take place at The Baltimore Comic-Con on Oct. 23.

Ringo Awards winners announced

Annual awards ceremony recognizes ‘the creativity, skill and fun of comics.’

The winners for the 2020 Ringo Awards were announced today, marking the fourth year for the awards program named for artist Mike Wieringo, who passed away in 2007.

The awards were presented virtually as part of the Baltimore Comic Con‘s online programming, and started with an introduction and keynote from Kevin Smith and Geoff Johns. It was also live, which led to some logistical/technical issues as they tried to “cut over” to winners for their acceptance speeches.

Nominees announced for the 2020 Ringo Awards

Winners are scheduled to be announced in October.

The nominees for the Ringo Awards have been announced, marking the fourth year for the awards program named for artist Mike Wieringo, who passed away in 2007.

Nominees were chosen by fans, along with a panel of judges that included Joan Hilty, editorial director of comics for Nickelodeon; James Kuhoric from Dynamite Entertainment; writer/artist Jill Thompson; Carol Tilley, an associate professor at University of Illinois; and writer/artist Gene Luen Yang. Final winners will be chosen by a vote open to comics pros.

Winners are scheduled to be announced Oct. 24 in conjunction with the Baltimore Comic-Con, which as of now has not yet been cancelled.

Fiona Staples, ‘Where We Live’ take home multiple Ringo Awards

Annual awards ceremony recognizes ‘the creativity, skill and fun of comics.’

The third annual Mike Wieringo Comic Book Industry Awards, a.k.a. The Ringo Awards, were presented last night at the Baltimore Comic-Con. Named for artist Mike Wieringo, who passed away in 2007, the awards celebrate “the creativity, skill and fun of comics.”

Fiona Staples, Sean Phillips and Image’s Where We Live anthology were the big winners of the night, each earning two Ringos. Brian K. Vaughan took home the award for best writer, while Phillips was named best artist.

Two Hero Initiative awards were presented as well. Congratulations to all the winners; the complete list is below.
