Dark Horse announces their first ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ title

The Fallbacks jump from prose to comics this fall.

After announcing last year they partnered up with Wizards of the Coast to make comics based on the very popular Dungeons & Dragons tabletop role-playing game, Dark Horse has announced their first D&D title — Dungeons & Dragons: The Fallbacks.

The four-issue miniseries features characters from Jaleigh Johnson’s prose novels — including Tessalynde the rogue, Cazrin the wizard, Baldric the cleric and Lark the bard. It’s by the team of Greg Pak the writer, Wilton Santos the artist, Edvan Alves the inker, Raul Angulo the colorist and Nate Piekos the letterer.

“When I read the Jaleigh Johnson prose novel where the Fallbacks first appeared, my primary takeaway, which is also my highest praise, was that it felt like an actual D&D campaign I might play with my funniest, most subversive, and biggest-hearted friends,” Pak said. “We’re bringing that vibe to full-color glory on the comics page with incredible interior art by Wilton Santos, Edvan Alves, and Raul Angulo, sharp letters by Nate Piekos, and glorious covers by a slew of artists including Marguerite Sauvage. Can’t wait for y’all to join the campaign!”

Nightcrawler’s origin gets a long overdue clean-up this fall

Si Spurrier and Wilton Santos will spotlight Nightcrawler and Mystique in ‘X-Men Origins Blue.’

During the Designing the X-Men panel in San Diego, Marvel announced a couple of new projects related to their merry mutants.

The first is X-Men Origins Blue, which arrives in November. The one-shot will delve into the origins of both Nightcrawler and Mystique, and, knock on wood, will retcon the terrible retcons made to the character in the early 2000s. It’s by Si Spurrier and Wilton Santos, and Spurrier’s quote offers a glimmer of hope in the right direction.

“It’s not often you get the chance to shine new light into the origins of a truly beloved character. To do so for two at once is an unprecedented privilege,” Spurrier said. “With this book, we’re breaking new ground in more ways than one. We’re walking this path with the deepest love for Nightcrawler and Mystique, and the deepest respect for the formative stories that surround them.”

The anthology features new comics by Al Ewing, Greg Pak, Daniel Bayliss, Jorge Corona and more.

Marvel will release another of their Marvel’s Voices anthologies in August, this time focusing in on the X-Men.

The anthology series, which sprang from a podcast on Marvel.com with the same name, has been published since 2020 and has spotlighted “diverse storytellers and their journeys,” as well as characters from diverse backgrounds. This year Marvel’s Voices began spotlighting specific character groups, like the Spider-Verse characters and the citizens of Wakanda, in stories by diverse creators.

And this time around, they’ve recruited a very diverse group to create stories about one of their most diverse character groups. Here’s a look at what you can expect to find in the anthology when it arrives Aug. 16.
