H1 navigates toward ‘Strangelands’ [Preview]

New series by Magdalene Visaggio, Darcie Little Badger, Guillermo Sanna and Mike McKone launches July 10.

Following the launch of Ignited last month, Humanoids’ new H1 line continues its rollout this month with Strangelands, a new title by writers Magdalene Visaggio and Darcie Little Badger, artist Guillermo Sanna and cover artist Mike McKone.

In Strangelands, “Two strangers find themselves inextricably tied together by inexplicable superpowers. Fighting their connection could mean destroying the world. Opposites attract? Elakshi and Adam Land aren’t married. In fact, a month ago, they were perfect strangers, dwelling in lands foreign to one another. But now, they’re forced to remain by one another’s side, for their separation could mean the planet’s demise. Their greatest challenge is to stay together — even if they have to tear the world apart to do so.”

The first issue arrives in comic shops July 10. Check out a preview below.

‘Giant Days: As Time Goes By’ wraps up the series

John Allison and Max Sarin will wrap up the long-running ‘Giant Days’ story with a double-sized special.

Graduation approaches for John Allison‘s long-running Giant Days series, and today BOOM! Studios announced Giant Days: As Time Goes By #1, which will conclude the series.

As announced back in April, Giant Days #55 will end the ongoing series, as the three main characters, Esther, Daisy and Susan, graduate from college. As Time Goes By will pick up 14 months later, as the three friends agree to reunite and catch up. Max Sarin will draw the special.

“This comic has always been about small moments and big catastrophes, so going out with a double-sized special gives me a chance to do plenty of both. It’s impossible to please everybody when you’re saying goodbye, but heaven knows, the Giant Days team are going to try,” said Allison.

‘Marvel #1000’ gets Star Wars, Conan, variant covers and a second issue

Look for Marvel’s big anniversary special in August.

Since announcing Marvel #1000, their big 80th anniversary special project with 80 creative teams telling one 80-page story, Marvel has released some additional details about the project. It’ll include some unexpected appearances in its pages, and not unexpectedly, a bunch of variant covers.

Smash Pages Q&A: Vivek Shraya

The writer, artist, musician and performer discusses her collaboration with Ness Lee, ‘Death Threat.’

Vivek Shraya is a writer, artist, musician, performer who has consistently pushed boundaries between forms and genres. Given this, it was perhaps inevitable that Shraya would eventually make a comic.

Death Threat, a collaboration with the artist Ness Lee, was published earlier this year by Arsenal Pulp Press. In fall 2017, Shraya began receiving a series of threatening, disturbing letters and while terrifying, they were also visual in a way that Shraya couldn’t ignore. The result is a book about receiving such letters, about how to survive such an experience that is chilling, moving and deeply powerful.

I spoke with Shraya recently about comics, collaboration, and the connections between this book and her previous one, I’m Afraid of Men.

‘Jia and the Nian Monster’ explores Chinese lore

Mike Richardson and Megan Huang team up for a new original graphic novel.

When he’s not busy running Dark Horse, Mike Richardson is writing for them. In anticipation of this year’s Comic-Con International later this month, Dark Horse has announced the newest project from their founder, Jia and the Nian Monster.

Richardson is teaming up with artist Megan Huang on this new original graphic novel that’s based on an ancient Chinese legend.

“I’m pleased to work with artist Megan Huang to bring this Chinese legend to life for readers of all ages,” Richardson said. “I’ve always been interested in Chinese lore and hope to impart that interest on a new generation of readers.”

BOOM! opens the ‘Hellmouth’ in their first Buffy/Angel crossover

Five-issue miniseries featuring the Joss Whedon-created characters debuts in October.

BOOM! Studios will bring Joss Whedon’s power couple, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, together again for the first time in the pages of Hellmouth. The five-issue miniseries is about, naturally, the end of the world.

Jordie Bellaire, who writes the main Buffy the Vampire Slayer comic, will team up with Jeremy Lambert of Doom Patrol and Goosebumps fame to write the series. They’re joined by artist Eleonora Carlini, who previous worked on BOOM!’s Power Rangers comics.

The crossover series features the latest renditions of the characters, who don’t have quite the history that they did in the TV show and Dark Horse line of comics. BOOM! rebooted the characters to a high school setting when they picked up the license, so this will be Buffy and Angel’s first meeting, as editor Jeanine Schaefer explains.

‘Sailor Moon’ arrives on comiXology

The popular manga series is available digitally in English for the first time.

Naoko Takeuchi’s beloved manga series Sailor Moon is now available on comiXology in four 300-page volumes, with future volumes planned to be released as the series hits print from publisher Kodansha Comics.

“Fans who enjoyed Sailor Moon as children have now grown into full-fledged adults – I am extremely grateful that their love for Sailor Moon continues to this day,” said Fumio Osano, editor of Sailor Moon. “Many people have told me they see the series in a different light now that they’ve re-read it as adults. Takeuchi-sensei started the series in her 20s and drew it into her 30s, so now that the fans who enjoyed it as children and teens are the same age she was, I think they’re making new discoveries.”

AdHouse launches an online T-shirt shop

Matt Lesniewski’s ‘The Freak’ featured on their first ‘AdT of the Month.’

AdHouse Books, publisher of fine comics like The Freak and Pope Hats, has launched an online T-shirt store through Threadless.

The shop currently has four designs available, including the above logo. AdHouse’s Chris Pitzer said the design for a shirt titled “3905” proved to be popular enough to warrant this new venture.
