Ryan Cody is creating an X-Men comic one panel at a time this October

Master Mold returns to plague the X-Men in this fan comic.

October has become a busy month for artists participating in themed drawing challenges, from Inktober to Drawtober to Pouchtober, and then you have your character-specific events. Ryan Cody is taking that idea a step further with The Inexorable X-Men, a project that turns a month of daily art into a complete comic book.

Cody isn’t simply drawing X-Men — he’s sharing the creation process as it unfolds, with each of the 31 daily panels contributing to a finished story. He’s also selling his original art as he goes along.

“This year, since I have the time, I thought I’d do another X-Tober event,” he wrote on his Patreon. “I did this a few years back and it was a smashing success. I had fun, people were able to purchase affordable original art, and I made some money. So I asked myself, what would be cooler than just doing pin-ups of Marvel’s Mightiest Mutants? Thus, The Inexorable X-Men were born.”

Cast your vote for who should join the X-Men

Marvel once again gives fans the chance to pick who should join the X-Men.

Marvel is once again asking fans to vote for who they’d like to see join the X-Men, as they’ve done for the past two years. This year fans can choose from six characters — Dazzler, Cannonball, Frenzy, Juggernaut, Jubilee and Prodigy.

The voting window is pretty tight — you have until Friday of this week to cast your vote. The winner will be revealed this summer as part of the big Hellfire Gala storyline, which we now know ties into the bigger Fall of X crossover that’s coming later this year.

Marvel has provided campaign posters for each character with catchy slogans; here’s the one for Dazzler, who also coincidentally received my vote this year:

Spidey practices social distancing in this awesome fan comic

Dewey Bass creates an unofficial comic that finds Spider-Man dealing with the current pandemic.

Dewey Bass has a pretty impressive collection of Spider-Man comics, so it’s no surprise that when he decided to make a comic about the coronavirus pandemic, he turned to the wall-crawler. His completely unofficial five-page Spider-Man comic, “Social Distancing,” has been liked or shared more than 42,000 times on Tumblr.

“I guess this is how I’m processing what we’re all going through right now. I had the stray thought, ‘What is Spider-Man doing during all this?’ and this happened,” Bass said on his Tumblr blog. “On the one hand, it’s kinda sloppy and inconsistent, but on the other hand, I had the idea Sunday night and I’m posting this Wednesday night. 5 color pages in 4 nights is pretty good work. Anyway. Hope everyone’s safe out there.”

Artists take the #SixFanarts Challenge

Melissa Capriglione kicked off a fun, art-filled meme in March — and the participants grew from there.

Way back in mid-March — which feels like a million years ago at this point, but was really just a few weeks back — Falconhyrste creator Melissa Capriglione kicked off a fun exercise that would turn into a widespread meme for artists across social media: The #SixFanarts Challenge.

What started has a simple tweet has blossomed into a fun and welcome distraction during these difficult times. And it’s pretty easy to participate: artists just ask their social media followers to throw out character names, and the artist draws six of them on a grid that Capriglione has provided.
