Since 2012, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic has been everyone’s favorite fantasy filly comic. But after nine years, the long-galloping series will make its final jump this September with issue 102 by Jeremy Whitley and Andy Price. Then in October, My Little Pony: Generations by Casey Gilly and Michela Cacciatore will feature the Friendship ponies teaming up with the original Ponies of the 1980s.
The finale to Friendship is Magic will feature the Mane 6 calling on friends to stop the Knights of Order from stealing the Elements of Harmony. The regular creative team of Whitley and Price will be joined by variant cover artists JustaSuta and Roopsha Mandal.
Then the five-issue mini-series, My Little Pony: Generations, will star the original iterations of the Ponies and the modern Ponies facing a new witch threat from the Volcano of Doom. The first issue will get variant covers as well, seen here, but artists weren’t initially identified.
“I am so grateful to IDW and Hasbro for allowing me to tell this fun, spirited story that brings part of my childhood into the present day,” says Generations writer Casey Gilly in IDW’s press release. “As much as I loved writing it, the best part has been seeing Michela’s incredible art breathe life into it — every single page is so vibrant, so charming, and just exploding with talent. I hope all My Little Pony fans can reconnect with characters from their past, enjoy the Mane 6 on another wild adventure, and fall in love with a couple of sassy, powerful, teenage witches the way that I have.”
“It’s exciting to work with the characters that I grew up with, and to have the chance to create new characters… especially the bad guys. Everyone loves the bad guys!” says Cacciatore.
Much like the long history of other Hasbro toy properties like Transformers and GI Joe, My Little Pony has grown to have an extensive mythology since the little horsies first debuted in 1981. In 2010, the property was relaunched with the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic animated series, which quickly gained an enthusiastic following across unexpected demographics. Two years later, IDW Publishing launched comic book tie-ins, which also sold incredibly well. Following the ninth and final season of the animated series in 2019, the Friendship comic book continued with a Season 10 story arc that will wrap up with the final issue in September.
