Cullen Bunn returns to Marvel for ‘Death of the Venomverse’

The five-issue miniseries is one of many projects coming during the Summer of Symbiotes.

Cullen Bunn, writer of everything from Agent Venom to Drax to the X-Men, has been absent from Marvel for a number of years now, but that’s about to change. Marvel announced that Bunn will return — “maybe for the last time” — to write the upcoming Death of the Venomverse series with artist Gerardo Sandoval.

Marvel revealed the news along with a lot of other announcements related to their “Summer of Symbiotes” publishing initiative at this weekend’s C2E2 in Chicago.

In his newsletter, Bunn said the series involves Carnage embarking on a vicious bloodbath across all of reality, with a terrible agenda that would result in “death and destruction for all reality.” A group of Venoms from different universes team up to stop Carnage.

“The series was originally meant to be called Venomverse 2 or something, but I lobbied hard for Death of the Venomverse, and I’m not going to let that be an empty promise,” Bunn said.

The five-issue series will run weekly in August and will include a back-up story written by Venom co-creator David Michelinie.

Speaking of Carnage, Marvel also announced a new series, Web of Carnage, will launch in July from Ram V, Francesco Manna and more.

According to Marvel, the new series will follow Carnage Reigns and will feature Spider-Man villain Morlun:

CARNAGE SEEKS TO INHERIT THE EARTH in WEB OF CARNAGE, a new series by Ram V, Francesco Manna, and more. In the aftermath of CARNAGE REIGNS, where Cletus Kasady exacted his vengeance on Miles Morales and the Marvel Universe, the Carnage symbiote remains left to its own devices, adrift among the stars. With its purpose renewed, Carnage has scant few hurdles between it and a glorious ascension to the throne of the King in Black…and the first is named Morlun.

They also revealed more details on Cult of Carnage: Misery, a four-issue miniseries first revealed in Marvel’s solicitations for May. The miniseries will not only introduce Liz Allen’s symbiote-sona (can we call them that now?) but also a new symbiote called Madness. Madness is an amalgamation of all the Life Foundation symbiotes, and it’s got its sights set on Misery. You can check out Francesco Mortarino’s designs for Madness, as well as the covers for issues #2-4 by Skan, above.

Marvel’s symbiotes aren’t just arriving in print this summer. Marvel also plans to release a new Venomverse-themed Infinity Comic in June that will introduce characters like President Venom:

A new Venom has been unleashed upon an unsuspecting world in this saga by writer Clay McLeod Chapman and an exciting lineup of artists including Phillip Sevy, Gustavo Duarte, Dax Gordine, and Nathan Stockman. On a freezing, snow-covered night a Holy Man comes to the aid of a mother and father terrified to kiss their little girl goodnight. Will he offer salvation or the ultimate destruction? The series drops on Marvel Unlimited on Tuesday, June 13 and J. Holtham will be writing alternating stories, beginning with a special 4th of July address from President Venom.

And finally, future issues of Venom will include a trip to the past for Eddie Brock and the return of Toxin, while Red Goblin loses control of his Rascal symbiote in a new storyline. Read more on Marvel.com.
