It seems like Deadpool is all about the team-ups these days. Not only will he and Wolverine buddy it up in their big road trip movie this summer, but now Marvel has announced that Rob Liefeld’s final Deadpool comic will bring the Merc with a Mouth together with several friends, new and old, in this miniseries.
Deadpool Team-Up will be written and drawn by Liefeld, who is also doing the covers. As for who exactly Deadpool is teaming up with, it’s an eclectic mix of Marvel mainstays and obscure choices: Wolverine, the Hulk, Spider-Gwen, Crystar (the Crystal Warrior!) and Major X, another Liefeld creation.
“Everyone has that one comic with that obscure character that they always wanted more of,” Liefeld said. “l, myself, have several of these and I pulled them from relative obscurity from the deepest corners of the Marvel Universe and placed them next to Deadpool, right at the center of an all new, cataclysmic adventure!”
Marvel shared more details on what to expect:
When you need some hired hands, Deadpool is your man! But when the Merc with a Mouth needs assistance, he’s got friends (and frenemies) from across the Marvel Universe! Witness Rob Liefeld weave an epic tale bringing Wade Wilson together with Major X, Crystar, Ghost-Spider, Wolverine, and the Incredible Hulk for the first time, as the return of a lost Marvel Comics character necessitates the ultimate team-up mission!
I’m going to assume you’re probably familiar enough with who the Hulk, Wolverine and Spider-Gwen are if you’re reading this site, but Major X and Crystar might not have been on your radar. Liefeld created Major X, who is the son of Storm and Cable from another reality. He first popped into the Marvel 616 back in 2019.
Crystar’s origins go back even further, to 1983, when Marvel released The Saga of Crystar, Crystal Warrior, which ran for 11 issues. Before it was first published, though, Remco released Crystar action figures, so many people assumed this was another licensed tie-in comic like G.I. Joe, which debuted before it, or Transformers, which came a year later. But no — Crystar was created by Marvel and licensed to Remco, who released the figures before the comic came out.
It was written by Mary Jo Duffy and featured artwork by Bret Blevins and Ricardo Villamonte, with some pretty awesome covers by Bob Larkin and Michael Golden. While Crystar existed in his own fantasy dimension, fighting his molten-covered brother Moltar, the comic did feature guest appearances by Doctor Strange, Alpha Flight and Nightcrawler in its short run. He’d later pop up during the 2015 Secret Wars event as part of the Weirdworld story by Jason Aaron and Mike Del Mundo, along with Arkon, Skull the Slayer and other fantasy-tinged Marvel characters. Other than that, Crystar has been banished to comic book limbo since the 1980s — unless you count that Danzig logo.
Appropriately, Deadpool Team-Up #1 will come in a foil variant as well:
Look for the first issue to arrive on Aug. 28.
