Aaron, Stewart’s ‘The Other Side’ gets deluxe hardcover treatment

Image Comics will release a new collection of the Eisner-nominated miniseries in July.

Image Comics will publish Jason Aaron and Cameron Stewart’s Eisner-nominated miniseries The Other Side as a deluxe hardcover “brimming with extras” in July.

“I’ve never worked harder on a comic than I did on this,” Aaron said in a statement. “And if I hadn’t, I don’t know where I’d be today. This book gave me a career. And in these pages, Cameron and Dave McCaig gave us all some of the most intense and haunting visuals the war comic genre has ever seen.”

Centaurs, werewolves and magic — oh my! — inhabit the world of ‘Moonstruck’

New Image Comics title from Grace Ellis, Shae Beagle and Laurenn McCubbin arrives in July.

At Emerald City Comicon in March, Image Comics announced a boatload of new comic titles, including Moonstruck by writer Grace Ellis, artist Shae Beagle and colorist Laurenn McCubbin. And now they’ve announced a few additional details about the comic.

Smash Pages Q&A: Ekstrom & Brownfield on Imminent Press and ‘Terminal’

Two members of the newly formed collective discuss their current Kickstarter campaign as it nears its completion date.

In January, a new comics imprint, Imminent Press, took to Kickstarter to raise funds to bring their graphic novel anthology, titled Terminal, to life. The campaign failed.

But more importantly, they didn’t give up.

The second time’s the charm, as they dusted themselves off and retooled their project and campaign. Now with less than a week left, they’ve hit their funding goal for the first issue of a Terminal miniseries, with hopes that they can earn enough to publish the second issue as well. Contributors to the project include a mix of veteran and emerging comic and webcomic creators, along with several names you might recognize from the comic press — one of whom is even our former boss.

I spoke with two members of their “board,” Steve Ekstrom and Troy Brownfield, about Imminent Press, Terminal, their Kickstarter campaign and more.

Sonny Liew, ‘Kill or Be Killed,’ ‘Saga’ top this year’s Eisner nomination list

Fantagraphics and Image Comics receive 20 nominations each.

Comic-Con International has announced the nominees for the 2017 Eisner Awards, presented annually in San Diego at the convention.

Sonny Liew’s The Art of Charlie Chan Hock Chye tops the list with six nominations, while Brian K. Vaughn and Fiona Staples’ Saga tied with Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips’ Kill or Be Killed tied with four nominations each. On the publisher front, Fantagraphics and Image Comics both received 20 nominations each, the most of any publisher.

Have Faith: Valiant, Threadless team for Mental Health Awareness Month

Valiant’s popular Faith character takes center stage on a limited edition shirt created to raise money for the nonprofit Hope for the Day.

Fans of Valiant‘s Faith character will want to check this out: the publisher has teamed with T-shirt site Threadless and Hope for the Day, a mental health education and suicide prevention organization, to sell shirts featuring the popular character. All proceeds will be donated to Hope for a Day, and the shirt will only be available during May, which is Mental Health Awareness Month.

Nick Derington mixes it up with the Young Animal cast

Check out his cover for the comic that came out last weekend on Record Store Day.

I mentioned before that Gerard Way, former My Chemical Romance singer and current curator of DC Comics’ Young Animal line, released a song about Cave Carson for Record Store Day on April 22. (You can hear the song for yourself here).

The 12″ picture disc came with a comic — a “mixtape” sampler featuring material from the various Young Animal comics, along with a framing sequence by Way and artist Michael Allred. If you didn’t make it out to your local record shop this past weekend to see it for yourself, Doom Patrol artist Nick Derington has posted the cover on his Tumblr.

‘Blackhand Ironhead’ debuts at Panel Syndicate

The first issue of David Lopez’s new “pay what you want” comic features family, superheroes and surprises.

Former Fallen Angel and Captain Marvel artist David Lopez returned to creator-owned comics today with Blackhand Ironhead, a “comedy about family, with superheroes, not about superheroes.” Like all of Panel Syndicate‘s titles, you can pay what you’d like for the first issue.

Adventurers battle alternative realities in ‘Retcon’

New Image Comics title from Matt Nixon and Toby Cypress debuts in September.

Matt Nixon and Toby Cypress will tackle alternative realities in their new series Retcon, due out from Image Comics in September.

“Artist Toby Cypress and I set out to make Retcon a ‘craft’ comic book,” Nixon said in a news release. “We took our time and made sure from layout to panel design to colors and letters—every piece fits, nothing was rushed. We made the best book that we could, and we believe it will find its audience.”

How about a monster-sized preview of ‘Kaijumax Season 2’?

The second miniseries of Zander Cannon’s “giant monsters in prison” comic from Oni Press gets collected on Wednesday. And boy is it worth your time.

Zander Cannon’s Kaijumax is one of the more oddly awesome comics out there, about a prison for giant monsters and all the crazy prison drama they get into. With the “season two” trade paperback set to arrive on Wednesday, Oni Press has released a 22-page preview, which you can see below.
