The nominees have been announced for the 2023 Hugo Awards, which includes a “Best Graphic Story or Comic” category.

Presented annually since 1955, the Hugo Awards recognize the best science fiction in books, comics, movies, TV and more. The Hugo Award for Best Graphic Story has been awarded since 2009, with previous winners including volumes of Saga, Ms. Marvel, Girl Genius, Sandman: Overture, LaGuardia, Far Sector and Monstress, which is up for the award again this year.

‘Far Sector’ wins the Hugo Award

N.K. Jemisin wins a fifth Hugo for her work with artist Jamal Campbell on the DC title.

Far Sector, the critically acclaimed Green Lantern story written by N.K. Jemisin with art by Jamal Campbell, has added another award to the Oan trophy case, as it took home the Hugo Award in the Best Graphic Story or Comic category this past weekend.

The winners of the annual awards were announced during a ceremony at Chicon 8, the 80th World Science Fiction Convention.

“Well, that’s some nice news to get surprised by at 3 am!” Jemisin posted to Twitter. “Woo hoo, Hugo #5! I’m super-proud of the work we did there, so nice to get some extra recognition! Congrats fellow Far Sector folks!”

Nominees announced for the 2022 Hugo Awards

The winners will be announced in September.

The nominees have been announced for the 2022 Hugo Awards, which includes a “Best Graphic Story or Comic” category.

Image Comics and DC Comics each received two nominations, while BOOM! Studios and Del Ray each received one. Notably, the Del Ray nomination is for Lore Olympus, the popular Webtoon comic. True Believer: The Rise and Fall of Stan Lee by Abraham Riesman received a nomination in the “Best Related Work” category.

‘Parable of the Sower: A Graphic Novel Adaptation’ wins the Hugo Award

Writer Damian Duffy and artist John Jennings adapted Octavia Butler’s dystopian novel into a graphic novel last year.

The graphic novel adaptation of Octavia Butler’s novel Parable of the Sower has won the Hugo Award for “Best Graphic Story or Comic.”

The book was adapted by writer Damian Duffy and artist John Jennings, and published by Abrams Books. The story is set in the year 2024 after unattended environmental and economic crises lead to social chaos. Lauren Olamina, a preacher’s daughter living in Los Angeles, sees a vision of the future and goes on to establish her own religion, Earthseed, and gathers a diverse community of believers.

Nominees announced for the 2021 Hugo Awards

‘Monstress’ receives its fifth nomination in four years, and is joined by ‘Die,’ ‘Ghost Spider,’ and more.

The nominees were announced via YouTube today for the 2021 Hugo Awards, which includes a “Best Graphic Story or Comic” category.

Two of the six nominees were published by Image, while Dark Horse’s Berger Books imprint, Marvel, BOOM! Studios and Abrams each received one. Writer Kieron Gillen received two nominations this year in the category, while Seanan McGuire, nominated for writing Ghost Spider, was also nominated for her prose work in two other categories.

‘LaGuardia’ wins the Hugo Award

In the “Best Graphic Story or Comic” category, the Berger Books title by Nnedi Okorafor, Tana Ford and James Devlin took home the award.

LaGuardia by Nnedi Okorafor, Tana Ford and James Devlin has won the 2020 Hugo Award in the “Best Graphic Story or Comic” category.

This is the second major award for the comic in the past two weeks, as it follows the book’s Eisner win in the “Best Graphic Album”—Reprint category.

Set in an alternative world where aliens have come to Earth and integrated with society, LaGuardia features a pregnant Nigerian-American doctor who has just returned to New York with an illegal alien plant named ”Letme Live” through LaGuardia International and Interstellar Airport’s customs and security. There, she and Letme become part of a growing population of African and shape-shifting alien immigrants, battling against interrogation, discrimination and travel bans.

‘Monstress’ wins its third Hugo Award

In the “Best Graphic Story” category, Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda’s fantasy series beats out ‘Saga,’ ‘Paper Girls’ and more.

Monstress, by Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda, is three-for-three at the Hugo Awards. The fantasy series published by Image Comics took home its third Hugo Award in the “Best Graphic Story” category for “Haven,” its third trade paperback collection. This follows its wins in 2017 and 2018.

Charles Vess, meanwhile, took home the award for “Best Professional Artist,” while The Books of Earthsea: The Complete Illustrated Edition, which he illustrated, won for “Best Art Book.”

‘Monstress’ takes home another Hugo; Takeda named best artist

In the “Graphic Story” category, Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda’s fantasy series beats out ‘Saga,’ ‘Black Bolt’ and more to win the award.

Monstress, the fantasy series written by Marjorie Liu, drawn by Sana Takeda and published by Image Comics, has again won the Hugo Award in the “Graphic Story” category for its second volume, Monstress, Volume 2: The Blood. In addition, Takeda also won in the “Best Professional Artist” category.

Presented annually since 1955, The Hugo Awards recognize the best science fiction in books, comics, movies, TV and more. The Hugo Awards are voted on annually by members of the World Science Fiction Convention. The Hugo Award for Best Graphic Story has been awarded annually since 2009, with previous winners including Saga, Ms. Marvel, Girl Genius and The Sandman: Overture. Other nominees in the category this year included Saga, Paper Girls, My Favorite Thing is Monsters, Bitch Planet and Black Bolt.

The 2018 Hugo Awards were presented this evening at a ceremony at the 76th World Science Fiction Convention in San Jose, California.

Monstress has been racking up awards left and right over the last year, winning an NCS Divisional Award, a British Fantasy Award and several Eisner Awards, among others. Congratulations to Liu, Takeda and the whole Monstress team.
