Dan Abnett + Marcelo Ferreira launch ‘Imperial Guardians’ in March

Gamora, Captain Marvel, Darkhawk and more will guard the galaxy next year.

Marvel has announced details on the next title spinning out of Imperial, the miniseries/event that restructured and relaunched Marvel’s cosmic line-up.

Imperial Guardians is a spiritual successor to Guardians of the Galaxy, as Gamora leads a team that includes Captain Marvel, Darkhawk, Amadeus Cho and Cosmic Ghost Rider. They’ve been recruited by Black Bolt’s evil brother, Maximus, to “protect the delicate balance of new Galactic Union by ANY means necessary.”

The best part? The title features the return of Dan Abnett to Marvel’s cosmic line, who teamed up with Andy Lanning on titles like Guardians of the Galaxy, Nova and various Annihilation era titles in the early 2000s. But as Abnett points out, it’s a whole new galaxy now …

“The Marvel Cosmic landscape after Imperial has got a very different feel, and it’s rewarding to play around with the aftermath of an event where ‘the good guys won.’ Or did they?” Abnett said. “No victory comes without back-room compromise, and nowhere is that more apparent than in the new Guardians remit.”

Marvel announces ‘Wiccan: Witches’ Road’ for December

The miniseries will spin out of ‘Imperial’ and send the young mage on a quest to save his husband.

Marvel’s Imperial is the gift that keeps on giving. The miniseries that’s redefining Marvel’s cosmic characters — and spinning off many of them into their own series — will also give us a new Wiccan miniseries.

Wiccan: Witches Road is a five-issue miniseries by Wyatt Kennedy and Andy Pereira. And while Wiccan and Hulkling have been out in space since Hulkling became leader of the Kree/Skrull Alliance, this miniseries will bring Wiccan back to his mystical roots — which should please fans of the Disney+ series Agatha All Along.

“It’s a real thrill to be able to take Billy in such an unexpected direction and put him out of his element, introducing a new villain and a surprising ally that I know fans have been wanting to see,” Kennedy said. “Obviously getting the chance to write one of Marvel’s best couples is a joy, but I’m really excited to dive deep into who Billy is as a single individual and explore what his title as Wiccan really means to both himself and the greater Marvel universe.”

SDCC | She-Hulk, Nova + more ongoings will spin out of ‘Imperial’

‘Planet She’Hulk’ and ‘Nova: Centurion’ lead the pack in November.

At the San Diego Comic-Con today, Marvel revealed that Jonathan Hickman, Iban Coello and Federico Vicentini’s Imperial miniseries is not only redefining the Marvel cosmos, but is also serving as the launching pad for five new ongoing series starring Nova, She-Hulk and more.

If you’ve been paying attention to the one-shot tie-ins for the event, you can probably guess the five series:

  • Planet She-Hulk by Stephanie Phillips and Aaron Kuder
  • Nova: Centurion by Jed MacKay and Alvaro Lopez
  • Exiles by a to-be-announced creative team
  • Black Panther: Intergalactic by to-be-announced creative team
  • Imperial Guardians by to-be-announced creative team

All five series are being set up in the Imperial War one-shots, with the first two debuting in November.

“This is a story that unites all the disparate and separate powers of the galactic portion of the Marvel Universe—the Kree, the Shi’ar, the Skrulls, and more—all in one big science-fiction epic, set up in a series of Russian nesting dolls where in every issue, something is pulled off, and something is revealed behind the thing you just learned the last time out. It’s an all-out cosmic war,” Marvel Execuitve Editor Tom Brevoort said.

Here’s a look at the two announced titles:

Dan Abnett returns to Marvel to assemble ‘Imperial Guardians’

The former writer of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ and other cosmic titles teams with Jonathan Hickman and Cory Smith for an ‘Imperial War’ tie-in.

Dan Abnett, who alongside Andy Lanning helped redefine the Guardians of the Galaxy and Nova as the characters we know today, will return to Marvel’s cosmic arena with Imperial War: Imperial Guardians, a one-shot he’ll co-write with Jonathan Hickman. The duo will be joined by Cory Smith on art.

“It’s great to be back telling cosmic stories as part of the Imperial event,” Abnett said. “My time spent with Nova and the Guardians back in the day was some of the most fun I’ve ever had in comics, and Jonathan’s orchestrating exactly the kind of epic-SF-scale, character-driven and drama-packed epic I love to sink my teeth into. This is quite some ride, and the Galaxy—and the Guardians—won’t be the same again! I’d say it’s the best jumping-on point for Marvel Cosmic since the original Annihilation.”

Imperial Guardians is the fifth one-shot accompanying the Imperial miniseries that finds several cosmic empires dealing with a conspiracy/murder mystery. It will follow issues spotlighting other players in Imperial, including Black Panther, She-Hulk, Nova, and Professor X and Lilandra.

Nova + the X-Men enlist in ‘Imperial War’

Professor X’s X-Manhunt story continues in a tie-in one-shot for ‘Imperial,’ while Nova tries to preserve the Xandarian Worldmind.

Marvel has announced two additional one-shots to spotlight some of the players in Jonathan Hickman’s Imperial miniseries. Imperial War: Exiles and Imperial War: Nova Centurian will both arrive this fall.

In case you missed itImperial is the latest project from Hickman, the architect of Marvel’s Ultimate Comics relaunch, the Krakoa era of the X-Men line and more. He’s working with Iban Coello and Federico Vicentini to redefine Marvel’s cosmic characters in Imperial, which kicked off earlier this month (I thought the first issue was pretty awesome myself). Marvel will publish five one-shots that tie into the event, starting with Black Panther and She-Hulk, and followed by two more in September.

Jonathan Hickman’s reimagining of Marvel’s cosmic comics adds ‘Imperial War’ one-shots

‘Imperial War: Black Panther’ and ‘Imperial War: Planet She-Hulk’ will arrive in August.

Jonathan Hickman, Iban Coello and Federico Vicentini’s Imperial project is growing in scope, as Marvel has announced the four-issue miniseries will be accompanied by five one-shots that “spotlight individual characters and groups as they navigate the startling developments and explosive conflicts sweeping the stars.”

In case you missed it, Imperial is the latest project from Hickman, the architect of Marvel’s very successful Ultimate Comics relaunch as well as the Krakoa era of the X-Men line. He’s working with Coello and Vicentini to redefine Marvel’s cosmic characters in this new miniseries that kicks off in June.

From what’s been revealed so far, Imperial looks like it’ll showcase a huge battle between various cosmic factions, including the Kree/Skrull Alliance, The Intergalactic Empire of Wakanda and New Sakaar, which will bring characters like Hulk, She-Hulk and Amadeus Cho into space.

The first two one-shots will help flesh out Black Panther and She-Hulk’s roles in the story. Hickman will work with writer Victor LaValle and artist CAFU on Imperial War: Black Panther.

“Working with Jonathan Hickman on an interstellar epic—who wouldn’t be thrilled by that idea?” LaValle said. “I’m excited to start working on the Intergalactic Empire of Wakanda because there’s not enough stories about Black folks in outer space. There could always be more. By the time I’m done, T’Challa and Shuri will have constellations named after them, in some distant galaxy.”

Hickman, Vicentini + Coello reach for the stars in ‘Imperial’

The trio will redefine Marvel’s cosmic titles in a miniseries that blasts off in June.

Jonathan Hickman, the architect of Marvel’s very successful Ultimate Comics relaunch, will next turn his attention to Marvel’s cosmic characters in Imperial, a four-issue miniseries that kicks off in June.

Hickman will be joined by two artists, Federico Vicentini and Iban Coello, who will present new takes on everyone from Nova to the Guardians of the Galaxy, as well as exploring the legacies of Planet Hulk and the Intergalactic Empire of Wakanda.

“I’m very excited about this project as I’m obviously a huge fan of all things Marvel Cosmic,” Hickman said. “The goal here is to kind of do what we did with the recent Ultimate line for all of our space titles, except having the setup book be more of an event than a world building exercise. The art team is killing it, and we’re all just very excited for what’s happening in this special corner of the Marvel Universe.”
