SDCC | Joe Quesada teams with Mad Cave Studios + Dupuis for a new comics line

Amazing Comics will launch with its first comic, titled ‘Disciple.’

Today at the San Diego Comic Con, Mad Cave Studios had a special guest joining their panel — former Marvel Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada, who wasn’t there just to MC.

Quesada teased in his newsletter this week that he was “hosting” their big “industry shaking” panel, which has something to do with this cryptic, Idaho-obsessed website. It turns out their big news is the launch of Amazing Comics, a new imprint spearheaded by Quesada that will be published in the U.S. by Mad Cave and in Europe by Dupuis. The first title they announced is called Disciple, which Quesada will co-write and draw, along with co-writer Charles Dorfman, inker Wade von Grawbadger, colorist Richard Isanove and letterer Joe Caramagna.

“The true origin of Disciple came about when I met Charles Dorfman, a talented writer with a passion for graphic storytelling,” Quesada said. “Charles pitched an adaptation of Hamlet, which sparked a creative journey that led to the unique version of Disciple we have today. This project blends Shakespearean elements with contemporary genres, creating a rich, mythological world for our readers to explore that begins as a prequel to the original, set in a whole new world.”

Kelly, Lanzing + Magno will provide the definitive origin of ‘Kang the Conquerer’

The Marvel villain takes the spotlight in a new miniseries that starts in August.

Marvel has announced plans to release a miniseries that’ll tell the “definitive origin story” of one of the Avengers’ greatest foes. Kang the Conquerer will launch in August by the writing team of Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing, with art by Carlos Magno, Espen Grundetjern and Joe Caramagna.

“Time may mean nothing to Kang, but Kang means everything to us. This is the book we’ve been wanting to write for years,” Lanzing said. “It’s a total dream come true for Collin and I to be making our Marvel debut – we’re best friends who first met through a mutual love of Young Avengers, Runaways and Ultimate Spider-Man. But to make our first mark with a character as storied as Kang the Conqueror, on a very personal pitch we never in a million years thought would be greenlit, is a genuine honor. Carlos Magno is delivering jaw-dropping work that recalls the exacting detail and operatic emotion of Kang’s co-creator Jack Kirby. We’re genuinely stunned by every new page. Add the brilliant colors by Espen Grundetjern, letters by the Marvel master Joe Caramanga, and the insightful leadership of our editor Alanna Smith, and you’ve got a team worthy of one of Marvel’s greatest unsung characters.”

The Mockingbird agenda: Creative team reunites for ‘Man-Eaters’ from Image Comics

Chelsea Cain, Kate Niemczyk, Rachelle Rosenberg and Joe Caramagna re-team for a new series where ‘a mutation in Toxoplasmosis causes menstruating women to turn into ferocious killer wildcats.’

After enduring terrible treatment on Twitter because of the cover to her final issue of Mockingbird, writer Chelsea Cain returns to comics with Man-Eaters — and she’s bringing the Mockingbird creative team with her.

Cain is joined by her previous collaborators, artist Kate Niemczyk, colorist Rachelle Rosenberg and letterer Joe Caramagna, as well as Lia Miternique and Stella Greenvoss, for the new series.

“It’s my first comic since Mockingbird, so I’d be lying if I said I didn’t have some Twitter-related PTSD,” Cain wrote on her website. “But I also have much better privacy settings and a hair trigger. I know the story goes that I left comics after Mockingbird, that I was driven away, dropped off at the state line by some trolls in a pick-up truck. I didn’t leave comics. Comics left me. I’ve been right here. I’ve been busy, working on this series, developing the exact story I wanted to tell, finding the perfect home for it – Image Comics – and then putting together my dream team. (If you’ve ever seen the TV show, The A-Team, it was EXACTLY like that.) Man-Eaters combines a lot of my interests: cats, murder, feminism, propaganda, dad with beards, detectives, people who are good at their jobs, sarcastic t-shirts, etc.”
