Joe Palmer makes his solo debut with dystopian thriller ‘Destination Kill’ from Oni Press in May

The British cartoonist writes, illustrates and hand-letters the four-issue series, set in a future London on the brink of a worker uprising.

Oni Press will publish Destination Kill, the solo debut of British artist Joe Palmer, beginning in May. Palmer will write, illustrate and hand-letter the four-issue series, which follows two detectives in 2125 London caught between a powerful corporation and an armed uprising of displaced workers.

Destination Kill started life as an image in my mind of a lone, masked builder armed with a pistol, standing on the snow-covered rooftop of St. Paul’s Cathedral in London,” said cartoonist Joe Palmer. “That image really stuck with me, and over time, it evolved into this fantastical story of a transatlantic train and a citywide builder-led revolution that I knew I had to make someday. This book is me taking the (long overdue!) step of being in total creative control of my work, which turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I wasn’t consciously thinking about it at the time, but at least part of the reason for doing this was to put something out in the world that represents me and my personality, and I feel like I’ve done that.”

Oni Press will publish Jay Stephens’ horrifying Harvey Comics tribute ‘Dwellings’

The three-issue prestige series begins in August.

Cartoonist/animator Jay Stephens will team with Oni Press for a new printing of Dwellings, his bloody ode to Harvey Comics and the rot that lives beneath suburbia.

Stephens previously crowdfunded the series, which won a Doug Wright Award last year. Oni will publish three 72-page prestige format issues of Dwellings bi-monthly starting in August.

“As a young collector in the days before the internet, before our town even dreamt of a comic shop, I remember walking the train tracks on weekends, hunting back issues at garage sales and flea markets, picking up whatever I could find,” Stephens said. “Though considered uncool, I was magnetically attracted to the irresistibly adorable Harvey comics… Casper, Spooky, Wendy and Hot Stuff in particular… and always kept an eye out for that one issue where they finally revealed who murdered Casper the Friendly Ghost. If the definition of nostalgia is to ‘return home in pain,’ Dwellings is the most nostalgic work I’ve ever produced. And my re-imagining of that darker Harvey Comics backstory has festered and intertwined with my personal fears into something truly frightening.”

Shalvey, McConville + Palmer plot a time-travel caper in ‘Time Before Time’

The new science fiction series debuts in May.

Image Comics has announced that Bog Bodies‘ Declan Shalvey and the Write It In Blood team of Rory McConville and Joe Palmer are teaming up on a new series, Time Before Time. They’ll be joined by colorist Chris O’Halloran and letterer Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou.

Set in the future, the story centers on two career criminals who steal their employer’s time machine.

“I loved what this team did on Write It In Blood so I’m really excited to take that crew and work on something more ambitious,” Shalvey told IGN. “This is a book with miles of potential, brilliantly realized by Joe Palmer and Chris O’Halloran. Their work to me, looks like the baby of Aeon Flux and Hellboy. I think readers will enjoy the gorgeous pages, but also the core story that follows Tatsuo into a more and more complicated set of troubles. With Time Before Time, Rory and myself get to write a crime drama that’s injected with even more dramatic twists and the compelling visuals that sci-fi provides.”
