Mike Mignola wins Bram Stoker Award for ‘Bowling With Corpses and Other Strange Tales From Lands Unknown’

The Hellboy creator’s Dark Horse graphic novel beat out four other nominees at the Horror Writers Association’s annual gala in Pittsburgh.

Mike Mignola’s first project in his shared universe with Ben Stenbeck has won the Bram Stoker Award for Superior Achievement in a Graphic Novel. Bowling With Corpses and Other Strange Tales From Lands Unknown, which was published by Dark Horse in January of 2025, took home the award Saturday night at StokerCon in Pittsburgh.

“It all started with an Italian Folktale about a boy who goes bowling with corpses,” Mignola said about the story back when it was announced. “I fell in love with the story as soon as I discovered it but I wanted to play fast and loose when adapting it, so I created a whole new world. Not TOO different than our world a few centuries ago, but with a lot more gods and monsters. Once I created that world new characters and stories just started pouring out of it. There is a whole lot to play with here and I expect to be at it for a very long time.”

Dark Horse reveals Mike Mignola’s next graphic novel, ‘Uri Tupka and the Devils,’ will arrive in November

The follow-up to ‘Uri Tupka and the Gods’ continues the character’s search for the secrets of the universe.

On the heels of the release of Uri Tupka and the Gods, Mike Mignola’s latest foray into the Lands Unknown universe he’s created with Ben Stenbeck, Dark Horse has announced that its sequel, Uri Tupka and the Devils, will arrive in November.

Mignola will once again team up with colorist Dave Stewart and letterer Clem Robins for the graphic novel, which follows Uri’s quest to discover the secret history of this “strange new shared universe.”

“Uri has found the gods but he still has questions and so he’s gone to look for the answers — in a nightmare castle full of devils!” Mignola said, “See Uri change shape, tumble through his own inner workings and take a pretty savage beating. I put the poor guy through the wringer in this one and I feel a little bad about that, but you gotta do what you gotta do, and these ‘Lands Unknown’ are not all sunshine and flowers.”

Dark Horse announces a new original graphic novel by Mike Mignola

‘Uri Tupka and the Gods’ is the first of two graphic novels Mignola has planned as part of his ‘Lands Unknown’ universe.

Mike Mignola is expanding the Lands Unknown universe with Uri Tupka and the Gods, a new graphic novel that Dark Horse Comics will publish next year.

“This is the first of two books tracing the life of Uri Tupka, former Doctor of Theology but now heretic, on the run as he looks for the truth about the gods,” Mignola said. “See Uri barely escape one disaster after another—pirates, bandits, witches and demons, giants and monsters. There is also a talking cat and a queen of the vegetables because, of course, why wouldn’t there be?”

The OGN follows Bowling With Corpses and Other Strange Tales From Lands Unknown, and like that volume, Mignola will work with colorist Dave Stewart on the art.

Mike Mignola + Ben Stenbeck team up for a new shared universe called ‘Lands Unknown’

‘Bowling With Corpses & Other Strange Tales From Lands Unknown’ will debut from Mignola’s new imprint at Dark Horse in December.

Dark Horse Comics today announced Bowling With Corpses & Other Strange Tales From Lands Unknown, the first publication in a new shared universe, called “Lands Unknown,” created by Mike Mignola and Ben Stenbeck.

It’ll also be the first publication to carry the name of Mignola’s new imprint at Dark Horse, Curious Objects. In recent years everyone from Stan Sakai to Brian Michael Bendis has launched an imprint with the publisher as a part of moving there — or moving back there, in Sakai’s case. So it seems only fair that the longtime Dark Horse creator, whose Hellboy is celebrating 30 years this year, would have one as well.

The release doesn’t say much more about what to expect from Curious Objects, but Mignola did share more about the Lands Unknown shared universe.
