Bloodthirsty butterflies spread the plague in ‘Nectar’

The new comic by Jeremy Robinson, Annapaola Martello and Francesco Francini will debut from Vault Comics this spring.

Novelist Jeremy Robinson will team with artists Annapaola Martello and Francesco Francini on Nectar, a horror comic about bloodthirsty butterflies that Vault Comics will publish in March.

The story takes place on an island village off Salem, Massachusetts, where a strange species of butterflies spreads the Dancing Plague and has a taste for human blood. 

“When my wife, Hilaree, and I started spitballing story concepts, all I knew was that I wanted to create a new Victorian monster to rival Dracula, Frankenstein’s Monster and werewolves,” said Robinson. “Our twisted imaginations went to work and just minutes later we had blood-sucking butterflies and the dancing plague wrapped together, along with the title: Nectar. I loved the idea so much, I started writing the script the next day.”

Back in the early 1990s Wolverine, Spider-Man, Ghost Rider and Hulk had a brief team-up in the pages of Fantastic Four while the actual Fantastic Four were out of town. It was a fun story by Walt Simonson and Art Adams that only last a few issues. But now Marvel will revisit that team — and time period — in The New Fantastic Four, a limited series by Peter David and Alan Robinson.

“Although their original stint was extremely short-lived, the alternate version of the FF has had its fans for years, including myself,” David said. “I am fortunate Marvel has given me the opportunity to revisit with them and take their battles to new heights in a new location with new allies and new enemies.” 

Like Maestro and X-Men Legends, this story takes place in the past, shortly after the quartet’s first appearance.

Smash Pages Q&A: David Pepose on the influences behind ‘Spencer & Locke’

With a sequel set to debut in April, the writer of the surprise hit series breaks down the comics DNA of the book.

It’s been called “What if Calvin and Hobbes grew up in Sin City?” but David Pepose and Jorge Santiago Jr.’s Spencer & Locke proved to be more than that. While it does wear those two inspirations on its sleeve, the DNA of this particular project goes deeper than its tagline.

With the followup to the surprise hit set to debut in April (and a movie in the works), I spoke with David about some of the influences on the series that go beyond the surface, including Moon Knight, Criminal, Batgirl and more. Admittedly this was a really fun interview to conduct, as it gave me an excuse to re-read several great comics and discover one that I need to add to my own “to read” list.
