Can’t Wait for Wednesday | Moon Knight resumes his mission as the ‘Fist of Khonshu’

Check out new comics and graphic novels arriving this week by Jed MacKay, Alessandro Cappucio, Mark Waid, Chris Samnee, Rodney Barnes, Stevan Subic, Declan Shalvey, Hannah Rose May, Vanesa Del Rey, Alan Moore, Phil Collen, Olivier Schrauwen and more.

Welcome to Can’t Wait for Wednesday, your guide to what comics are arriving in comic book stores, bookstores and on digital.

This week sees Moon Knight return to helm his own comic, along with two new Batman miniseries by some killer creative teams. Speaking of “killer,” there’s a whole lot of horror titles this week — it must be October — including another Where Monsters Lie miniseries, a Christopher Chaos anthology, Crypt of Shadows and more.

I’ve pulled out some of the other highlights for this week below, but for the complete list of everything you might find at your local comic shop and on digital this week, you’ll want to check out one or more of the following:

As a reminder, things can change and what you find on the above lists may differ from what’s actually arriving in your local shop. So always check with your comics retailer for the final word on availability.

Update, Oct. 16: It looks like several titles that were released today are not available on Comixology, including Crypt of Shadows, Mystique and more. They are now listed as coming to the digital platform next Wednesday.

Mystique is up to her old tricks in a new series by Declan Shalvey

The shapeshifting super-spy fights to protect mutants in a five-issue miniseries that starts in October.

Declan Shalvey has proven he has a very particular set of skills when crafting espionage stories, and this fall he’ll apply them to the greatest spy in mutantdom, Mystique.

As a part of the X-Men: From the Ashes initiative, Marvel has announced a new series starring the former leader of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. Shalvey will write and draw a five-issue miniseries, which will feature Mystique sifting “through the dark underbelly of the Marvel Universe for an unpredictable tale of action and espionage.” Nick Fury’s appearing in it as well.

“Mystique is hands down one of the most compelling characters to come from the Marvel Universe,” Shalvey said. “To have an opportunity to put my own stamp on such an iconic character and showcase her in a series of her own is a unique privilege.”

Nightcrawler’s origin gets a long overdue clean-up this fall

Si Spurrier and Wilton Santos will spotlight Nightcrawler and Mystique in ‘X-Men Origins Blue.’

During the Designing the X-Men panel in San Diego, Marvel announced a couple of new projects related to their merry mutants.

The first is X-Men Origins Blue, which arrives in November. The one-shot will delve into the origins of both Nightcrawler and Mystique, and, knock on wood, will retcon the terrible retcons made to the character in the early 2000s. It’s by Si Spurrier and Wilton Santos, and Spurrier’s quote offers a glimmer of hope in the right direction.

“It’s not often you get the chance to shine new light into the origins of a truly beloved character. To do so for two at once is an unprecedented privilege,” Spurrier said. “With this book, we’re breaking new ground in more ways than one. We’re walking this path with the deepest love for Nightcrawler and Mystique, and the deepest respect for the formative stories that surround them.”

Marvel reveals ‘X-Men Black’ details, teases ‘Uncanny X-Men’ return

Chris Claremont, Scott Bachalo, Seanan McGuire, Shawn Crystal and more tackle some of the X-Men’s greatest villains.

At Comic-Con International in San Diego today, Marvel revealed the details behind one teaser and delivered another at the same time.

X-Men Black, which seemed to be following in the footsteps of X-Men Blue, Gold, Red, etc., isn’t an ongoing series like the others. It’s a series of one-shots starring various X-Men villains that, most noticeably, will see legendary Uncanny X-Men writer Chris Claremont return to the franchise to write Magneto, while Chris Bachalo returns for Emma Frost.

Here’s a rundown of the one-shots:
