Welcome to Can’t Wait for Wednesday, your guide to what comics are arriving in comic book stores, bookstores and on digital.
This week sees Moon Knight return to helm his own comic, along with two new Batman miniseries by some killer creative teams. Speaking of “killer,” there’s a whole lot of horror titles this week — it must be October — including another Where Monsters Lie miniseries, a Christopher Chaos anthology, Crypt of Shadows and more.
I’ve pulled out some of the other highlights for this week below, but for the complete list of everything you might find at your local comic shop and on digital this week, you’ll want to check out one or more of the following:
- Penguin Random House (Marvel + IDW + Dark Horse + more)
- Lunar Distribution (DC + Image + more)
- Diamond’s PreviewsWorld (BOOM! + Dynamite + more)
- ComicList (Pretty much all of the above)
- Amazon/Kindle new releases (digital comics)
As a reminder, things can change and what you find on the above lists may differ from what’s actually arriving in your local shop. So always check with your comics retailer for the final word on availability.
Update, Oct. 16: It looks like several titles that were released today are not available on Comixology, including Crypt of Shadows, Mystique and more. They are now listed as coming to the digital platform next Wednesday.
Moon Knight, Fist of Khonshu #1 (Marvel, $4.99): After the events of this summer’s Blood Hunt, Marc Spector is back from the dead and headlining a comic again. Jed MacKay and Alessandro Cappucio put Moon Knight back on the streets of New York after his resurrection, as the agent of Khonshu resumes his duties at the Midnight Mission.
Batman and Robin: Year One #1 (DC, $3.99): The creative team behind beloved runs of Daredevil, Captain America and Black Widow bring their magic to DC as Mark Waid and Chris Samnee present this new miniseries that will focus on the early days of the relationship between Bruce Wayne and his new ward, Dick Grayson. Together they will navigate their new roles as superheroes and father/son while battling a new mob boss called The General, as well as Two-Face.
Where Monsters Lie: Cull de Sac #1 (Dark Horse, $3.99): Kyle Starks and Piotr Kowalski’s disturbing Where Monsters Lie miniseries gets a sequel, as Connor Hayes, the final boy turned apex monster hunter, is sent to deal with another gated community for slashers.
Mystique #1 (Marvel, $4.99): Declan Shalvey applies his very particular set of skills to mutantdom’s greatest spy in this five-issue miniseries that he both writes and draws. Mystique will sift and shift through “the dark underbelly of the Marvel Universe for an unpredictable tale of action and espionage” in a tale that also features Nick Fury.
Godfather of Hell #1 (Vault Comics, $4.99): Cavan Scott and Pius Bak show us what happens when you send an ambitious mobster to hell – he sees it as just another business opportunity.
Vicarious #1 (BOOM! Studios, $4.99): This new title by Ryan Parrott and Eleonora Carlini is about a 20-something who, through technological implants, allows rich old people to experience the world through his eyes.
Batman: Full Moon #1 (DC, $5.99): Rodney Barnes and Stevan Subic put Batman to the test against werewolves in this Black Label miniseries.
Eternal Warrior: Resurgence #1 (Valiant, $5.99): This one-shot tie-in to Alien Books’ Resurgence of the Valiant Universe is focused on Gilad, the Eternal Warrior, as Fred Van Lente teams with artists Alvaro Papagiani, Exequiel Fernandez Roel, Camila Jorge and more to introduce a villain called The Kaggen from Gilad’s past. Check out a preview here.
Vampiro: Rockabilly Apocalypse #1 (Massive, $4.99): Wrestler-turned-announcer Vampiro gets another comic, this time by Massive and Masked Republic, their partner on the Luchaverse comic featuring Rey Mysterio that came out earlier this year. This title is written by Michael Kingston and features art by Martin Pouso, a.k.a. El Terrorifico Dr. Napalm, a cartoonist, illustrator, musician and tattoo artist from Montevideo, Uruguay.
The Oddly Pedestrian Life of Christopher Chaos Halloween Special (Dark Horse, $6.99): This anthology of stories set in the world of Christopher Chaos includes contributions by James Tynion IV, Isaac Goodhart, Tate Brombal, Phil Jimenez and more.
Crypt of Shadows #1 (Marvel, $4.99): Marvel’s annual Halloween anthology returns, this time with stories featuring Scarlet Witch, Namor, Man-Thing and more by Benjamin Percy, Jason Loo, Carlos Magno and more.
Hysteria #0 (Vault Comics, $4.99): This zero issue offers a preview of the longer Hysteria graphic novel that’s set to arrive next year by Def Leppard guitarist Phil Collen, co-writer Eliot Rahal and artist Alex Schlitz.
The Exorcism at 1600 Penn #1 (IDW, $4.99): Writer Hannah Rose May teams with artist Vanesa Del Rey for this story about the first woman president of the United States (how timely!) dealing with literal demons that have taken up residency in the White House.
The Moon and Serpent Bumper Book of Magic (Top Shelf, $49.99): Alan Moore and his magical mentor Steve Moore present their long-awaited celebration of magic and the occult. This collection features prose stories, illustrations and sequential art, with contributions by several of Alan Moore’s previous colleagues, including John Coulthart, Steve Parkhouse, Rick Veitch, Ben Wickey and the late Kevin O’Neill.
Clay Footed Giants (Mad Cave, $19.99): Mad Cave presents an English language edition of Mark McGuire and Alain Chevarier’s graphic novel about two fathers dealing with the trauma of their pasts before it can impact their families.
Sidekicks (Graphix, $14.99): Dan Santat writes and draws this graphic novel about Captain Amazing’s search for a new sidekick, which brings out the “super” side of his four pets, who just want to spend more time with their human.
Sunday (Fantagraphics, $39.99): Olivier Schrauwen’s latest graphic novel follows the stream of consciousness of a fictionalized version of the author’s cousin, Thibault, as his girlfriend returns from a long trip on the same day his surprise birthday party is planned.
