Can’t Wait for Wednesday | Super Mondo Mega Mutts unite!

Welcome to Can’t Wait for Wednesday, your guide to what’s coming to your local comic shop this week. Wednesday brings several big debuts, including a gonzo action comic from Curt Pires and Juan Gedeon, returns to the Last Ronin and Dark Knights of Steel universes, two new comics from Simon Spurrier and a Space Ghost annual that previews an upcoming Hanna-Barbara crossover that makes the nine-year-old in me squeal with glee.

Smash Pages Q&A | Juan Gedeon on ‘Super Mondo Mega Mutts’

The artist of ‘The Jurassic League,’ ‘C.O.W.-boys of Moo Mesa’ and more talks about his newest book with writer Curt Pires, which kicks off in July.

Juan Gedeon has wanted to draw comics since he was a kid staring at a Spawn cover and thinking about Greg Capullo’s artwork. The Argentina-born artist, who has moved from working in animation to American mainstream comics, has made a name for himself on projects like Ghost Racers, Venom, The Jurassic League and C.O.W.-boys of Moo Mesa, among many others.

And now turning his attention to four mutant dogs on a tear through Los Angeles.

Super Mondo Mega Mutts #1 arrives from Oni Press in July, written by Curt Pires and drawn by Gedeon, and it is, by his own description, considerably more violent than the Saturday morning cartoons that inspired it. We talked about designing dogs with distinct personalities, what it means to go cartoony in a superhero book and the projects he’s got waiting in the wings.

Curt Pires + Juan Gedeon go anthropomorphic in ‘Super Mondo Mega Mutts’

The four-issue series from Oni Press follows a team of transformed dogs fighting for justice in a lawless corner of Los Angeles.

Oni Press has announced Super Mondo Mega Mutts, a four-issue series by writer Curt Pires and artist Juan Gedeon. The miniseries will kick off in July.

The series is set in downtown Los Angeles one year after a fragment of an inter-dimensional civilization collided with the city, creating a lawless zone called “The Gleam” where the laws of physics no longer apply. When government contractors send four research animals into the area to recover alien technology, the dogs emerge radically transformed, gaining human-level intelligence and a mission of their own. The four mutts — Wolf, Frankee, Griffy and Freddy — team with a mentor called Mojo to fight back against federal forces and gangs wielding stolen alien tech.

“It’s been thrilling to watch Oni Press reach new heights the last couple years under the tenure of Hunter [Gorinson, President & Publisher], Sierra [Hahn, Editor-in-Chief] and the whole team—and I couldn’t be more excited to be bringing them one of my best ideas ever,” Pires said. “This is a book that is big, bombastic and heartfelt, one that’s capable of bringing new folks into comic shops—and I’m ecstatic to be creating it with my masterful collaborator, Juan Gedeon.”
