Tobin + MacDonald search for true love + kill monsters in ‘Croak’

The new title debuts from AfterShock Comics in November.

Paul Tobin and Andy MacDonald have a new comic called Croak coming from AfterShock in November that combines weaponized nightmares, monsters and … modern dating? Yeah, it’s an interesting, complicated mix, but it sounds pretty cool, as Tobin explains it:

“Croak is about finding monsters and true love, and learning to tell the difference. It’s a world where dream research has ripped a hole between realities, and now legions of legendary monsters stalk the lands. The only way these dream portals can be closed is if certain people quit having nightmares, if they find peace and lead character Risa needs…to fall in love,” Tobin said. “We’re talking TRUE love. Helping her (mostly) is Croak himself, a troll with (maybe) her best interests in mind, but he’s ALSO fond of how she finds and kills monsters, because Croak eats monsters, and he’s always ravenous. So Croak—the comic—is Risa’s story of trying to navigate a world that’s both full of monsters, and monstrously bad dates. She isn’t sure which she’d rather face.”

‘No One Left To Fight’ returns for round two

Aubrey Sitterson, Fico Ossio, Racial Avila and Taylor Esposito return to the FightVerse this October.

No One Left To Fight will get a sequel in October, as Aubrey Sitterson, Fico Ossio, Racial Avila and Taylor Esposito return to the world that was featured in the 2019 miniseries.

According to Dark Horse, the new series “picks up where the smash-hit, critically acclaimed first No One Left To Fight series left off—with the world’s greatest fighter struggling to find his place after all his battles have been won and while there’s still time left.” This series features standard and variant covers by Ossio, which combine into an interlocking image.

Jack the Ripper rides again in ‘Cross to Bear’ this October

Marko Stojanović, Siniša Banović, Aljoša Tomić and Taylor Esposito send England’s most notorious serial killer to the American West in a new series from AfterShock Comics.

Marko Stojanović, Siniša Banović, Aljoša Tomić and Taylor Esposito will posse up in October for an alternate history take on Jack the Ripper, as they tell the story of how he fled England to hide out in the American West.

Cross to Bear will kick off on Oct. 13 from AfterShock Comics, as the notorious serial killer is pursued by a group with ties to the Crusades.

“The book is about Jack the Ripper fleeing to America in 1889 and heading straight to the Wild West – because his own savagery can avoid detection at the still savage frontier,” Stojanović said. “He is, however, pursued by the Order made up from the descendants of Crusaders knights set on eradicating the unnatural – and what could be more unnatural than the first documented serial killer grabbing all the headlines and causing mass hysteria? Only thing is, these crusaders are far from their usual haunts, and they’ll need help from a man who severed his ties with the other at the price of abandoning his own family.”

Romance blooms as heads are bashed in ‘Savage Hearts’

Aubrey Sitterson, Jed Dougherty, Lovern Kindzierski and Taylor Esposito team up on a new miniseries from Dark Horse.

Dark Horse Comics has announced another new series from writer Aubrey Sitterson, followed March’s announcement of The Worst Dudes. The new title, Savage Hearts, is a collaboration with artist Jed Dougherty, colorist Lovern Kindzierski and letterer Taylor Esposito.

It’s also a romantic comedy — albeit one that also features barbarians, dinosaurs and evil sorcerers.

“I can’t imagine restricting myself to a single genre,” Sitterson said. “That’s why I’m so fortunate to have the support of Dark Horse Comics and editor Brett Israel, whether it’s on fight comic soap operas, raunchy sci-fi mysteries, or sexy jungle romcoms.”

Sitterson + Gregori tag-team on ‘The Worst Dudes’ at Dark Horse

The five-issue series kicks off in June.

Aubrey Sitterson (No One Left to Fight, The Comic Book Story of Professional Wrestling) and Tony Gregori (Deuce of Hearts, Karma Police) are teaming up for a “hilarious, aggressively weird, and willfully vulgar” new comic from Dark Horse. They’re joined by colorist Lovern Kindzierski and letterer Taylor Esposito

“After the colossal success of No One Left to Fight, I knew we needed to follow it up with something entirely different,” said Sitterson. “That’s why Tony and I cooked up a book so vile, so raunchy, so utterly odious, that it’ll make your other comics turn yellow.”

Smash Pages Q&A: Alex Segura

The author and co-president of Archie Comics talks about his latest project, ‘The Black Ghost’ from comiXology.

Alex Segura has had a busy year. During the day he’s busy as the co-president of Archie Comics, where he’s editing books, including the company’s flagship title, Archie. This year he also published a new novel, Miami Midnight, which he claims will be the last book in his Pete Fernandez series for the time being.

This week comiXology starts to serialize The Black Ghost, a creator-owned miniseries that Segura co-wrote with Monica Gallagher. The comic tells the story of Lara Dominguez, a reporter trying to uncover a masked vigilante in the city, and plays with the intersections of crime fiction, pulp fiction and superheroes in interesting ways.

The first issue is out this week, and I asked Segura a few questions about the comic, crime fiction and collaboration.
