Slugfest | The Thing takes on the world in Marvel’s August solicitations

Plus: Spider-Gwen gets a reboot, Venom goes black & white, and Uncle Scrooge returns!

Slugfest is a roundup of cool announcements about projects coming to a shelf near you. This edition focuses on Marvel’s August 2025 solicitations. Well, mostly. Hit the links for more information.

For the past few years, Marvel has made a habit of releasing a one-shot in August to celebrate its anniversary. This year appropriately will feature Marvel’s First Family, whose first issue debuted in August of 1961, and more importantly are starring in the big summer blockbuster Fantastic Four: First Steps. So history and synergy make a fantastic combo.

The Thing takes center stage in Marvel All-On-One: The Thing vs. the Marvel Universe by Ryan North and Ed McGuinness — a play off the team-up title Marvel Two-In-One, which featured The Thing. In this special, though, Ben Grimm isn’t exactly teaming up with anyone — he returns from a solo mission in space to find the entire Marvel Universe wants to kill him. The story will be told in “all splash pages,” so expect a lot of action.

Two Thunderbolts teams face off in ‘Thunderbolts: Doomstrike’

The ‘One World Under Doom’ tie-in series starts in February.

If you read the most recent Thunderbolts series you know that Bucky Barnes and company inadvertently did Doctor Doom a solid. That doesn’t sit well with Bucky, so he’s pulling the band back together — along with some new members — to face off with Doom and his own team of Thunderbolts.

The five-issue series is written by Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing, with art by Tommaso Bianchi. In addition to characters like the Winter Soldier, Black Widow and Red Guardian, it’ll also feature the return of many of the original Thunderbolts, including Songbird, Moonstone, Atlas and Fixer.

“We can’t wait for folks to see what Ryan (North) and company have planned for One World Under Doom – a Marvel event with brains, heart and incredible scope,” Kelly and Lanzing said. “The Thunderbolts are a crucial part of the puzzle: this is the story of what happens when heroes openly oppose Doom… and how they’ll have to learn to fight differently if they’re ever to make a difference.”

Marvel marks 60 years of Daredevil next month

Saladin Ahmed, Aaron Kuder, Ann Nocenti, Stefano Raffaele, D.G. Chichester and more will contribute to the oversized ‘Daredevil’ #8.

Marvel will celebrate the 60th anniversary of Daredevil next month in Daredevil #8, an oversized issue featuring multiple stories by past and present creators who worked on the title.

And there’s a lot to look forward to in the anniversary issue. It will include a main story by Saladin Ahmed and Aaron Kuder, who relaunched the title last year and cast Matt Murdock as a priest, as he continues to battle demons based on his own seven deadly sins. Other creators contributing to the issue include Ann Nocenti, D.G. Chichester and Erica Schultz, who have written Daredevil in the past, as well as the two artists I most associate with the character: John Romita Jr. drew the main cover, while Frank Miller did a variant.
