Walt Simonson, Gerry Conway, Stephanie Phillips, Scott Eaton and more create new stories set in alternate universes.
Marvel has announced the return of What If?, their classic alternate history comic, for the summer, with four one-shots planned under the title What If? Dark.
I chuckled a bit when I saw that they added “Dark” to the title. If you ever read any of the original What If? run, you know that more times than not, the stories would take a dark turn. For instance, “What If Phoenix Had Lived?” ended with the death of pretty much everything else.
In any event, What If? helped introduce Marvel’s version of the multiverse, and this year will introduce four new universe where things took a different turn. The one-shots also mark the return of two classic Marvel creators, Walt Simonson and Gerry Conway, as they revisit stories they’ve become synonymous with.
Here’s the rundown:

New comics and graphic novels arrive this week from Jeffrey Brown, Rachel Smythe, Al Ewing, Ram V, Walter Mosley, Bryan Hitch, Kikuo Johnson and more.
Welcome to Can’t Wait for Comics, your guide to what comics are arriving in comic book stores, bookstores and on digital.
You can visit Diamond’s PreviewsWorld website (which is still up; see below) for this week’s almost complete list of new comics arriving in stores. The Lunar Distribution home page has DC’s releases and the comiXology new releases page for what’s available digitally.
I should also add that the list of what is actually arriving at your local shop can vary from what’s on anyone’s official website for a myriad of reasons — so always check with your comics retailer for the final word on availability. And this week, in particular, will likely bring delays for some titles, as Diamond Comics Distributor’s website was taken down earlier this week by a ransomware attack. They’ve set up a temporary website where they’re giving updates, and according to one from yesterday, “some customer shipments of product with an on-sale date of November 10 will be delayed.”

Artist Tom Reilly will join the novelist for a six-issue miniseries starring Ben Grimm.
Renowned novelist Walter Mosley will write a new miniseries for Marvel featuring The Thing. The author of Devil in a Blue Dress and many other novels will work with artist Tom Reilly (Marvels Snapshot) on the project.
According to Marvel.com, “the story will range from the urban sprawl of the alleys of Manhattan to the furthest reaches of the cosmos itself. In THE THING, a lonely evening and a chance encounter (or is it?) sends Ben Grimm embarking on a sojourn that will have him confronting—and battling—figures both old and new.”
