Happy Thanksgiving week and welcome to Can’t Wait for Wednesday, your guide to what comics are arriving in comic book stores, bookstores and on digital.
This week brings the return of two teams from DC and Marvel, as the former kicks off a new Justice League Unlimited title and the latter resurrects the West Coast Avengers. There’s also fun new stuff from Peter J. Tomasi, Peter Snejbjerg, Sophie Campbell, Jeff Parker, Lukas Ketner, Tom King, Ryan Sook, James Robinson, J. Bone, Art Baltazar and Franco, among others.
I’ve pulled out some of the other highlights for this week below, but for the complete list of everything you might find at your local comic shop and on digital this week, you’ll want to check out one or more of the following:
- Penguin Random House (Marvel + IDW + Dark Horse + more)
- Lunar Distribution (DC + Image + more)
- Diamond’s PreviewsWorld (BOOM! + Dynamite + more)
- ComicList (Pretty much all of the above)
- Amazon/Kindle new releases (digital comics)
As a reminder, things can change and what you find on the above lists may differ from what’s actually arriving in your local shop. So always check with your comics retailer for the final word on availability.
Justice League Unlimited #1 (DC, $3.99): In the wake of Absolute Power, the Justice League are back together in DC’s core universe, courtesy of Mark Waid and Dan Mora. And what a League it is — if you were a fan of the animated series of the same name that took an everyone-and-the-kitchen-sink approach to membership, you’ll probably love this title as well. This issue promises a surprise on the last page, as well as a prelude chapter to Jeph Loeb and Jim Lee’s upcoming “Hush 2” storyline that’ll run in the ongoing Batman title next year.
West Coast Avengers #1 (Marvel, $4.99): Gerry Duggan’s Iron Man run may have ended, but he’s not quite done with the character. He teams with artist Danny Kim for this new iteration of West Coast Avengers that’ll feature not only Iron Man, but also War Machine, Spider-Woman, Firestar, Ultron and a new character named Blue Bolt.
Hornsby & Halo #1 (Image Comics, $3.99): The latest title from Ghost Machine, the publishing group set up by Geoff Johns and several other creators, is about two infants, a demon and an angel, who are switched at birth in an effort to avert war between Heaven and Hell. It’s written by Peter J. Tomasi and drawn by Peter Snejbjerg, and it’s part of Ghost Machine’s “Family Odysseys” universe.
Batman/Santa Claus: Silent Knight Returns #1 (DC, $3.99): Jeff Parker, Lukas Ketner, Marcelo Maiolo, Pat Brosseau and Michele Bandini make the nice list for bringing us a sequel to Batman – Santa Claus: Silent Knight, last year’s surprising superheroes-save-Christmas tale. This one will also run weekly throughout December, leading up to Christmas day conclusion.
Synap #1 (Mad Cave Studios, $4.99): This new science fiction title by Chris Moses and Andrea Giannini centers on a defense company called Synap that creates giant robots to fight off potential alien invasions and the psychic individuals they recruit to control them.
Welcome to the Maynard #1 (Dark Horse, $4.99): James Robinson’s return to comics continues in this four-issue miniseries as he and his Saviors collaborator J. Bone check into the Maynard, a magical hotel for with witches and otherworldly creatures.
Black Canary: Best of the Best #1 (DC, $4.99): Black Canary enters the ring in this six-issue miniseries by Wonder Woman writer Tom King and Seven Soldiers: Zatanna artist Ryan Sook. The story features Dinah Lance going up against Lady Shiva to determine the best hand-to-hand fighter in the DC universe.
Flash Gordon Adventures (Mad Cave, $7.99 SC/$12.99 HC): The Aw Yeah! Comics guys, Art Baltazar and Franco, are back with new kid-friendly adventures featuring Flash, Ming, Dale and the rest of the Mongo crew. This first graphic novel is available both as a softcover and a hardcover.
Lost in the Future (Papercutz, $12.99): Four friends and their bully get accidentally transported to the future while on a field trip in this new graphic novel by Damián and Àlex Fuentes.
Batman/Santa Claus: Silent Knight (DC, $17.99): In addition to debuting the first issue of its sequel, DC is also releasing the first Silent Knight miniseries as a collection this week. Check out the first story by Jeff Parker, Michele Bandini, Trevor Hairsine and Danny Kim featuring the epic team-up of Santa Claus, Batman, Superman and more.
Wet Moon 20th Anniversary Omnibus Collection (Oni Press, $34.99): The seminal graphic novel run by Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles‘ Sophie Campbell is getting collected in new editions with new covers and a new introduction by Campbell.
Midnight Tiger: Origins (CEX, $29.99): The first adventures of Ray-Anthony Height’s teenage vigilante get collected, courtesy of CEX Publishing and a crowdfunding campaign. Midnight Tiger was originally published by Action Lab, so it’s good to see that Height must own the rights to it, given the legal actions other creators are having to take against the company. Height said on social media he plans to launch an ongoing Midnight Tiger series next year, so check this out if you’re interested in indie superheroes.
